i'd suggest .22LR easy to get, always abundant.

but if you wanna be a macho wannabe, you can go for "magnum."  

EDIT: it's not the size mate, but how good your aim is

The only reason for choosing the .22Mag would be if you were to actually hunt small game with it -- it does have more power.

The .22LR, on the other hand, is very economical, and a lot of fun to shoot. For your first rifle, you can't go wrong with it.
