Oh, the queen will be bitter...

Recommended Posts

This a short article, as quoted from Jane's Defense News:

"As the SA-80's woes continue, it looks like time to start again

By Terry J Gander, Editor of Jane's Infantry Weapons

The British Army's SA-80 Individual Weapon (IW) and Light Support Weapon (LSW) are back in the news for the wrong reasons. Despite extensive modifications it seems that they continue to jam.

At present the two types are destined to remain in service until at least 2015. That may not now happen. It would appear that the only certain way to rectify the IW/LSW unreliability situation is to start again. Both weapons have now gained such a reputation for unreliability that even the slightest shortcoming will result in calls for replacement, the most likely candidate being the H&K G36."

... any thoughts?

Yes, H&K is a part of British Aerospace. The guns are however manufactured in Oberndorf, Germany and the designers are German.

Rolls Royce is owned by BMW, right? There are very few pure national corporations left today.

Indeed business has no borders.

Can we use the old topic if this is going to be discussed as there were some good contributions to it.

No. Those are pretty old topics - over a month. We can stick to this one.

What I meant actually to say in my first post was:

Why would the Queen be pissed? H&K is partially German and the Queen is also partially German wink.gif

Before they changed it to Windsor the Royal Family's name was Saxe-Coburg Gotha.

As for replacing the SA80 I think that the SIG 550 is a good contender, built under licence of course. Or a totally new design taking into account our requirements.

as long as a country can supply its soldiers with reasonable weapon, soldiers will be happy.

and that also includeds ability to supply them at moment's notice.

Now the Brits are gonna have to pay because the idiotic Generals could'nt admit they were wrong. I feel bad for you guys. Its almost like our M-16 except we fixed ours after 17 years in Service.

Generals? Do you think the world's finest military minds know less about guns than school boys?! The problem came directly from Whitehall. Politics as usual.

Most of the European Monarchs are related. For example when the Queen was last in Spain people were shocked when the King kissed the Queen, but they are cousins in some fashion.

the entire french army and security forces use it

from the experience i got with this rifle , it's pretty good , its 1100rpm is really mad

the only main problems with it :

short magazine , even if it's not really the mag capacity that disturb me , it's simply the fact that the early famas version (F1) only accepts the 25rounds one , and can't use the 5.56 stanag , but this problem is solved since the arrival of the G2 in service

the plastic looking doesn't make justice to this gun

it has most of the problems the bullpup design introduce

but it has a lot of strong poinbt wich make of it a good weapon in my eyes , like the ability to use a powerfull rifle grenade , the latest version can be mounted with an m203 launcher and a great variety of scopes can be mounted of the famas , my service rifle never jammed while in my hands

I have only tried the FAMAS once and it was at a shooting range. I didn't like two things about it:

1) Very plastic cheep feeling. Didn't feel like a real rifle, but more like a toy.

2) I don't think 5,56 calibre rifles are good for the infantry. With 7,62 you can be sure that the bullet won't deflect if fired through vegetation.
