But I was wrong. To me however the word jiddish did not imply any kind of differentiation but simply the adjective to a noun. E.g. german <=> german music but jewish <=> jiddish music just like africans music (instead of south-african music) So I guess you gave the word "jiddish" a fundamental second meaning whereas I took it only to be the adjective of the word Jew!(in a european environment)<span id='postcolor'> Just some minor clarifications: Yiddish is indeed a European Jewish language. It can be written in the Latin or in Hebrew alphabetic characters but it's usually in the latter. The word Yiddish comes from the Hebrew word Yehudi - someone from the tribe of Yehuda (Judah, son of Jacob). Since most Jews for the last 2500+ years are descendants of the tribe of Yehuda, the term Yehudi in Hebrew has referred to Jews in general since 2500+ years ago. As such, the term Yiddish has been applied by both Jews and gentiles as referring to Jews and to things Jewish. Jews may say of someone that he/she has a "Yiddishe neshama" - meaning a "Jewish soul" (neshama=soul in Hebrew). "Do bist a Yid?" in Yiddish means "are you Jew?". Yiddish music means music in yiddish. Yiddisheh music could mean Jewish music, even if it's not in Yiddish.

Similarly, I once was talking to a German tourist couple here (with zero knowledge of Hebrew) and I was at a loss for words in English for something similar to Nike's "Just do it" slogan. So I used the Hebrew/Yiddish word "tachlis" and was surprised at how they knew the word and understood exactly what I meant. (Do you? )
WhoCares 0 Posted August 27, 2002 In german it would be Tacheles = Klartext and it is indeed taken from the jiddish Tachles

WhoCares 0 Posted August 27, 2002 Yepp, I know, while I found it in a slightly different form: takli^t (move the 'roof' above the i ) and of course in hebrew letters it would look completely different btw: The word 'Massel' is used colloquial for luck, in the part of Germany, where I am originally from (Saarland -> Mosel-fraenkisch), but very seldom and mostly by older people.
