Recommended Posts

There a lan is aproaching very soon and i've got an old Athlon500 system I want to run as a server. Only question is, will this be alright as a dedcated server with about 20 people on it?

on a lan with about 300+ megs of ram it should handle 16 players fine

don't exceed 16 AI at any times, Russin uses a simular machine for the RN and we only see lag with lots of AI on his T1 conection

I used to run a Celeron 300a with 384 meg of ram for a server, as long as there is not a lot of armour and air vehicles, it will work fine. You will saturate the server, but it will work.

I wish the player would disapear when they disconnect instead of just respaening into an AI sad.gif

That could be a real bummer if the guy who disconnected was the pilot of a chopper filled with his buddies!

if you have a human Commander have him order the AI away from the front lines and the respawn point

simple as pie

not true, some maps there is no grouping, and the AI might be the commander

For dedicated server, I have seen major improvements when upgrading the CPU. Initially, I had P3-550 doing the serving and it was a bit slow when it came to heavy missions with infantry, AI, etc.

When going to an Athlon 700, it was much more bareably, but still it wasn't happy with some missions. Lastly, I upgraded my dedicated server to an Athlon 1.0Ghz and its pretty happy with most missions I throw at it.

My only complaint about the dedicated server is the problems I have when running some non-BIS missions. All of the BIS missions seem fine with the dedicated server, but playing some of the user created maps tend to have problems (AI scripting in particular).

In the end, I only play OFP with multiplayer missions that are hosted on my server. It creates a totally lag free environment for playing, especially since my server is more than enough to handle it. Only if the dedicated has some more tweaks and improvements, I'd be a pretty happy camper.

Have you tried contacting the individuals concerned and explaining the situation to them? There are some talented mission makers out there and it would be a shame if their missions aren't being played by more people solely through a lack of communication smile.gif

Unfortunately, most of the maps that I get come from a co-worker and I have no idea where they come from. So, I tend to stick with the default set in there and they generally work well.

With the latest revision of the dedicated server, things work pretty well, but a modified version of Battlefields still doesn't work in MP. I know the author who modded it, maybe he can make some more tweaks on the map for me.
