Gabardine 10 Posted September 9, 2013 It drives me goddamned insane I don't have any option to set the grass render distance, when will we get an option to edit it?
mr.g-c 6 Posted September 9, 2013 Many of the visual options are also gameplay affecting options, like in this case camouflage/covering. Its not that easy with a slider, etc.
Gabardine 10 Posted September 9, 2013 Who gives a flying fuck if all I play is coop? If it's that much of a deal it should not be hard to set it to a common value for everyone playing on a TvT mission. I want to be able to have grass render all the way to the goddamn horizon if I so choose
gravedancer 10 Posted September 9, 2013 Most people end up turning off grass due to the soul sucking frame loss. Consider yourself lucky you don't have this issue.
Hatchet_AS 201 Posted September 9, 2013 Technically it is customizable, but it would have to be done via an addon. If I recall correctly, you would have to modify the map config, clutterDist or something similar. Honestly unsure if this process has evolved or changed in ArmA 3. As fas as being a player is concerned, I don't think it is likely you'll see an option specifically for "customizing the render distance of grass (clutter)". xendance 3 Posted September 9, 2013 Most people end up turning off grass due to the soul sucking frame loss. Consider yourself lucky you don't have this issue. Soul sucking fps loss? It will only help with max fps, and the difference is few miniscule frames per second. When action starts and AI routines start running, your average fps won't be affected that much. http://imgur.com/a/4wQBo#
BL1P 35 Posted September 9, 2013 The problem with it for me, is that its not only grass that's altered its the topography of the terrain itself. Turning off or lowering grass makes the hills lower and makes objects on the hills float in mid air. Would like to see 2k-3k grass draw distance just to see how much it effects the performance. What is it at the moment 300m ?

David77 10 Posted September 10, 2013 You can set the terrain grid from 0 - 50 to adjust the grass draw distance. I often use terraingrid 48 for maximum performance while still having some grass atleast. IE; SetTerrainGrid 48;
Hatchet_AS 201 Posted September 10, 2013 Terrain detail setting = grass render distance This is true. But it only adjusts it within the defined value. Which is in the map config itself. And what I thought the OP was getting at. For what its worth, from my experiences in A1/2, setting the clutter distance to anything beyond a couple hundred meters (little more at best), will produce more than significant performance issues (and I have fairly serious hardware). Thus it is the way it is. Which is not to say a large number of players with the hardware couldn't run it at higher than default distances (pretty sure ACE and others upped in A2). But it's not going to be anything massively larger. Unless of course you are just wanting to take screenshots or something. :)

It still should be up to the player. And, honestly, grass doesn't hurt FPS that much.
David77 10 Posted September 12, 2013 (edited) Hey, so what? It still should be up to the player. And, honestly, grass doesn't hurt FPS that much. It depends. TerrainGrid 3.125 (full grass - maximum draw distance) will be far more taxing than terraingrid 48 (minimum draw distance) or 50 (off) for example. Full grass is actually pretty demanding. Troubling 10 Posted September 12, 2013 This game is poorly optimized if optimized at all. Top of the line gaming computers have problems running it. Even the live stream showed this, why would people buy this garbage game?
