True, IceFire, but the same could be said about half (if not the majority) of the threads in Offtopic.  tounge.gif In any case, ASSUMING that the instances and dosages described in the article are true, what are the effects of the said subtances on the human body... Would a pilot be subjected to the effects I listed above or not?

When I posted, I was hoping that someone with medical experience would be able to comment, instead of this deteriorating in the usual "bashing" thread... Which is why I'm going to restrain myself and ignore Rhubarbman's comment. wink.gif

I remember about hearing a pill that was being created by the military. It apparently kept you up an extra 72 hours. If I remember the news report correctly, it had no side effects and in testing it worked. This was a long time ago. Is anything like this used? Instead of amphetamines.

I believe Germany also used to give their soldiers amphetamine type substances to keep them awake during WW2....

Who knows, maybe the dosages are very slight.  Maybe they get just enough to be usful as pep pills.

We dont know anything other than what was in the article.

And we all know how accurate the media can be.<span id='postcolor'>

Ya, u can say that... But since washington actually gave the article green light i suppose its mostly trueth in the article, or even underestimmated since we know the army smile.gif They are allways so fund of secrets tounge.gif

I just think its pretty damn silly not just train a few more pilots and give them more shifts instead of long.time flight were drugs are nessesary.

Cant forget about the accident were a pilot bombed a wedding killing 40 people because he saw gunfire in afghanistan (A wedding ceremony there is to shoot in the air). Its silly and terrible, but I dont know if it would had happend if the pilot wasnt stoned, but you cant help having a doubt anyway.

or is it bash the US military day and u might have ended up speaking german too tounge.gif

Amphetamins are stimulants so why would it make them paranoid or any other side affects ?

I agree with the comment about instead of giving pilots longer shifts, train more pilots to cover them.

Sure it costs money and time, but rather money and time than another friendly fire incident - no matter what was behind the cause of it.

Although im sure the government blah would see things differently....

It is quite common to give drugs to soldiers. Finnish army has issued amfetamin to first aid packages of pilots. It is meant to be used in such situations as when you've got to get to safe position after your plane has been shot down. During peace time it is not used in flight missions.

During war amfetamin is also available for other troops in first aid packages of medics, field hospitals, etc.

Army even admitted that they have got big stocks of amfetamin for wartime use. :)

Sounds like a typical appologist stance....

If you were a long haul truck driver and you started taking these drugs so that you could drive more hours and make more money, and you caused an accident that killed four people, you'd be sued into oblivion by the families of the dead...and thats after the criminal charges.

And I bet you'd be the first guy to say 'nail him to the wall!'

Speaking from personal experience, amphetamines can be very very bad things. And if they are pushing these guys to keep up the number of sorties, I am willing to bet it's more than just a token dosage. And yeah..they do make you paranoid if you are suffering from sleep deprivation as well.

If the pilots involved in the Canadian friendly fire accident were on these, I can bet we'll see a BIG settlement to the familes.

They can make you paranoid because of how hyped up you can get. It's like being 100% alert but you can't think very straight. If they say celebratory fire while they were "tweaking", it could easily freak them out. Maybe they assumed it was AA. It's hard to make clear decisions when you use any drug like that.
