Shark Model for animators

Recommended Posts

So I found this Great White shark model and ported it to O2 for someone in the community to animate:

Images can be found removed (I would post images here, but the image tags keep converting to urls for some reason.

Model (Unbinarized and archived): removed

If you decide to use this, I'm not aksing for credits (as I didn't make the model), but I'd like to see your result :) I would love to see this swimming around.

In other words, the model is most likely someone else's intellectual property and not licensed for porting to other games. (Models ripped from games usually aren't.)

The use of such material is not generally encouraged around here.

I've already seen ported content on the forums and armaholic, though. Who's to say the uploader didn't get permission from the studio, or that he simply got inspiraiton from Jaws Unleashed? Saying its from jaws unleashed doesn't mean he ripped it (though highly likely)

Ported from where? If it's from older games in the Arma series, BI seem to be ok with it. Porting old 3rd party mods is also ok if the original author gives his permission.

I haven't seen anything ported from other games to Arma3 though. Can you point out any specific examples of this?

Who's to say the uploader didn't get permission from the studio?

Or maybe it just fell off the back of a truck, right? ;)

Unfortunately, when you find models from another game on the internet, most of the time they have been ripped without the IP rights holder's permission, so that's the safer assumption.

I can't point out anything specific, but I remember seeing content on armaholic where the author has stated the models are from the flight simulator series.

I don't think its safe to assume anything, and like I said in my previous post, he may have just got inspiration from the game and it might not be ripped.

You've been around a lot longer than I have so I don't want to criticize your judgement, I just don't like the idea of disregarding content because you suspect its ripped.

If in-fact it's ripped, I will happily remove the file, regardless. Also, if the studio decided to sue Bohemia, they can't be held accountable, because it's not an asset to their game.

Likewise I don't want to rain on your parade or tell you what to do, but there have been problems here in the past where people have posted ripped/ported content (or derivatives of such content) without the author's consent. This is against the forum rules (§19 specifically) and can result in a ban.

Where intellectual property is concerned, there is no "implied permission". If you didn't make it yourself, and the guy you got it from neither made it himself nor can supply proof of some kind of license, you're better off leaving it be.

Still, at the end of the day it's your funeral. I just thought you deserve a fair warning. :)

I appreciate the warning. In the case where the uploader was the author, would I still need their consent if its on a free download website?

Depends on whether they provided a license with their work, which content authors usually do. If the license permits you to re-use it for any purpose, this equates to written permission so you're good to go. Otherwise you'll need to contact them and obtain it directly.

One thing that needs to be pointed out in this regard is that the generic "license / usage rules" on sites like removed are basically worthless. The site may claim you are free to use any content that is uploaded there, but they may aswell be giving you James Bond's license to kill. It's not worth the paper it's printed on unless the permission comes from the actual author.

§19 is pretty clear in that regard. If it's not your creation, provide permission you have rights to the content or prepare to find yourself in hot water.

Regarding that shark - it should be pretty obvious that the guy who uploaded it is not the author. Jaws Unleashed is a commercial title produced by Appaloosa and published by THQ, do you really think they'd upload their assets to a shady hoster like removed?

Edit: Took a look around that site. There's exactly one mesh with reference to Jaws Unleashed on there and the guy who uploaded it even says it's ripped from Jaws Unleashed in the comments. How can you still pretend it's a legal download?

If Armaholic is hosting any content that was ripped without permission, I'm sure Foxhound would like to know about it.

We do not accept models from that website at all. It's full of ripped models, and if there ARE legal models on there, it's by accident. If you think there is a model on there that might be on there legitimately, you'll have to find another source for it that's credible. Please don't repost models or images of models from the site in question anymore.
