infection 1 Posted April 21, 2013 Hi, I'm working on a map which I want to be in a 1950-60's setting, so for example I want to model the Thompson rifle and m1 garand, maybe some vehicles aswell however I've got very low knowledge of oxygen and how all of the config files etc work in addons would anyone be able to point me in the right directions towards starting doing this? Messiah 2 Posted April 21, 2013 Oldie but a goodie, still very relavent, but the config and model.cfg stuff is old and out of date How to make an addon from scratch These forums too, just because this is ArmA3, the old tutorials, threads, videos, etc are just as applicable. There are few ArmA3 specific tutorials around because simply there is very little need for them.
max power 21 Posted April 21, 2013 Guns are pretty complicated, and modelling complex things is a problem if you are fighting with the tools. I would suggest just screwing around with the tools for a while, maybe making some simple objects like chairs or something to get familiar. The objective here is not to make an awesome chair but to gain some experience with the tools in a no risk project, so you can get past the threshold where you want to take the computer and throw it out a window before you try to model something hard. You and your chairs... (But yes, don't run before you can walk. The first tutorial from the first link is where I started, you'd be suprised how much you can learn by making an ISO container with doors that open and how applicable that is for every other addon you make)
zachgibson22 3 Posted April 22, 2013 Since I'm finally almost finished with my first weapon I know the pain. So I think I'm going to try and make a detailed tutorial. Now I still don't know how to do somethings like custom reload gestures and attaching optics(I will learn though) but it will be a working gun! I start on it as soon as possible! You don't need to worry so much about edgeloops but you do need to manipulate things into forms, and have different forms interact with each other. It has a physical presence so you need to make a geoLOD. You can shoot it so you need a firegeoLOD. Its topology is simple so it wont break you brain when you do a shadow LOD, but it does have intersecting forms so you need to do some problem solving. Then you can make it a vehicle and get someone to sit in it, so you need memory points to get in, a crew proxy, and config stuff. http://image.made-in-china.com/2f0j00teoTjvcBZZkE/Wooden-Chair-With-PU-Seat-AD20-.jpg Edited April 22, 2013 by Max Power
Messiah 2 Posted April 23, 2013 I've always prefered the iso contained purely for the animation side of things, but if we were to combine an iso container with a chair, we'd really be talking.
max power 21 Posted April 23, 2013 What's an iso container? edit: Ah. A shipping container.

PuFu 4599 Posted April 23, 2013 God damn max, the architect within is frustrated by that chair ;) See this http://st.houzz.com/simgs/0d816baf0f8caadf_4-9176/-chairs.jpg (i have a few at the office ;)
max power 21 Posted April 23, 2013 I think you could make that out of a geodesic primitive but I don't think O2 has them... plus adding edges to faces in O2 is :(

Could have advised me on that too. :)
