RPG Effectiveness

Recommended Posts

What does that have to do with anything? Also, ERA takes the form of visible blocks on the exterior (ie, we can look and see whether it is there or not), and has limited coverage. And it's not likely to do much to protect an MRAP anyway.

ERA is too heavy to be used on MRAP's, I doubt the armour of the MRAP could withstand the blast from the ERA itself.

It could probably withstand the blast, since the modern Russian variants don't even burst the block anymore. But if you look at RHA equivalencies, ERA isn't relied on the completely neutralize shaped charge jets. Rather, you just knock off a couple hundred millimeters of penetration capability, and rely on conventional armor for the rest. So even a weakened warhead would still mess up an MRAP.

In tangent to this, the US Army has all of its MRAPs and MATVs kitted with Hull Protection Kits like this http://t2.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcQN2KzkxVaIBw4WfXWZgVMNl5yPqgB69TP-CIw-rlZ36mpZED-A

At least I never saw an Army convoy with out them. Perhaps the USMC doesn't have the money to allocate for that or its a doctrine thing? I never bothered to ask.

Sorry for the small picture, had a hard time finding a decent one. Its the metal fence like structure running along the sides.

Yeah, they use Slat armor because it has a pretty good chance of shorting out the fuse and preventing detonation entirely.

Anyone who has played the I44 mod in Arma 2 (or, indeed, Iron Front) knows how much better the game is with proper armour damage modelling.

That's from an improvised EFP, not an RPG.

I've seen this in land mine design but not as a sort of direct fire weapon. Looked it up, pretty neat. Thanks for the info. Though I'm not sure how you know that is and EFP attack specifically for that picture.

Another thing that balances gameplay is the number of shots each anti-tank soldier gets which is around three.

this is arma, a milsim, not BF3 or CoD where balance is important. realism > balance.

Yes, it's up to mission designers to create that balance or squad leaders to avoid unbalancing situations in more sandbox style missions (Insurgency, Dom). The game serves to create a base of realism for the community to work off of.

Ie, what the results of a top attack EFP NLAW would look like. There's also a video on youtube of people in Laos hitting a Toyota with an RPG, and it's pretty similar. Except that the thin skinned sedan was also sprayed with shrapnel from the blast, which would have hit the passengers.

Here is a description of the incident with the Fennek (will be in full game) use a translation software since I can find it only in german. At that time until 2009 I was working for KMW and we did get back Fenneks in all kind of damage states...mostly from accidents involving crahes. The mentined vehicle that got a RPG-7V hit ws repaired and is again in running oder. Since you can't build a vehicle in this weight class RPG proof the concept is to produce the armour. mainly just 2 spaced 28mmm High Grade Aluminium plates with inlets of ceramics and Dyneema, to let athe metaljet pass without producing overpressure and spall. Double staged Warheads will be a real problem here.

yeah but what happened to the crew? it'd be a miracle if the front passenger and driver weren't sprayed by a jet of molten hot copper

According to The Internets, driver killed and front passenger lost an arm.
