zeep 3 Posted March 7, 2013 (edited) I'm talking about 3D audio with 2 speakers or headphone setup! Not surround 4.1 / 5.1 setup. In-game, the sound from something in front of you and something behind you sounds exactly the same. You can't tell the difference purely by listening. Alpha 3 has the same sound engine as Arma2 i recon, because in Arma2 the sound is the same. Does BIS have any plans to upgrade the sound engine to support 3D audio?? It would mean a world of change to in-game audio positioning! This short video plays examples of normal vs 3D sound support: (In this old video they use a different driver but nowadays most normal sound drivers can do it openAL/Fmod etc.) Edited March 7, 2013 by zeep
mrcash2009 0 Posted March 7, 2013 (edited) Well I have a Creative X-Fi ... if I switch on Xf-Fi CMSS-3D in the settings and set my stereo desktop speakers to 5.1 in windows sound settings (but not in Xfi console, I only have stereo) and play Arma2 .. I get this, so I would assume the same already anyway and in 3, maybe its not native, but it deff works for my Xfi in 2. Most prominent with Helis. I dont have the alpha BTW so cant test, anyone with xfi and has what I posted in their console set it up and try and test it, windows setup "5.1" but Xfi console to Stereo speakers, 3D on. Report the results. Edited March 7, 2013 by mrcash2009
zeep 3 Posted March 7, 2013 Interesting, thanks. But if i set windows to 5.1, then other games that do support 3D audio for 2 channels maybe stop playing sounds that are behind you? I mean if the driver thinks i have a 5.1 setup. Is that so in your experience? In any case, i will test your suggestion out.
mrcash2009 0 Posted March 8, 2013 Just only set it for windows when you play arma, then switch back for everything else, thats what I do, I just put s ound devices shorcut on menu bar to flip them around. You set to 5.1 in windows mainly so 3d from Xfi console will kick in (for arma at least) and it step down to stereo (Xfi console set to 2.1 speakers) using the filtering capability to get the behind/in front/corner to corner doppler 3d effect. I would be interested if you or anyone else gets this working in Arma3, so post back if you can even with a vid if poss.
tonygrunt 10 Posted March 8, 2013 I have no problem getting positional audio with a Soundblaster Z and a stereo headset.
mrcash2009 0 Posted March 8, 2013 Arma3 I assume? Anyway I would have thought as much for it to follow on the same, good news.

NeuroFunker 11 Posted March 8, 2013 i already posted in suggestions thread, adding speakers mode in arma 3, where you could switch between stereo, headphones, 5.1/7.1 spearkers. Using 3D headphones with games, which allowing you to set 5.1 in game, actually sound 3d, like in source engine.

That would be most welcomed as not all sound cards support positional audio for headphones, Realtek being one of them if I am not mistaken. But they would have to licence some sort of sound engine or build it inhouse, maybe too late in this stage.
shankly1985 1 Posted March 8, 2013 Not sure about 2.0 but I use xonar ds 5.1 and when playing my back speakers play sounds coming from behind me.
NeuroFunker 11 Posted March 8, 2013 on real 5.1/7.1 as far as i know, 3D works fine, only in 3D headphones doesn't as expected.
zeep 3 Posted March 10, 2013 I tested to get 5.1 on my 2 speaker setup using CMMS-3D, it didn't work sadly. Anyone else successful?
