Spanish little island invaded by marroc

Recommended Posts

I cant belive that Morocco wants a war with Spain, we has a huge advantage (and i mean HUGE) on Naval and Air warfare over Morocco, we could Strike from our mainland, and Morocco cant strike back (Nato 5ÅŸ treaty point, remember that) our main base on the south of Spain is Rota, which is also an American base (they cant be so fool)

Otherwise i cant understand what the f**k are they trying, they are not going to take any advantage from this, and the diplomatic explanation from Morocco government ranges from the absurd ones to the directly insultant.

What's happening internally in Morocco at the moment that the government wants to divert attention from? If they are unpopular, a little victory may swing things around a bit.

So the island is almost nothing. Why would Spain go to war over it?

Because they don't have much choice. And Morocco hasn't figured that out yet.

The fact isn´´t the size of the islands....the fact is the way it has been taken....if you give cookies to a mouse, the next thing he will ask for is a cup of milk....I see an strategy from the moroccan government to destabilize Spains government....and this goes after the opposition leader here in Spain has had a meeting with the moroccan president....mmmm...something strange here.....

If it's ok I want to jump in here with a thought.

One thing I've learned over the years is anytime someone starts to piss in someone elses Cheerios there is ussually a date in history that coincides with the pissing

In 1936 some dude,Calvo Sotelo, I think he was to be the future leader of Spain, was assasinated on July 12th. Then on July 17 there was one hell of a uprising in Morocco, followed by civil unrest in Spain on July18th. Hopefully someone with a better knowledge of history in spain can fill in these blanks for me. So it looks to be a timed event, something has been pissing the Moroccans off and they choose this date to start getting it on. Remember those that don't remember history are doomed to repeat it.

Any thoughts?

I can understand why Spain would go to war over it. If Mexico or Cuba decided to take over an American island off the coast of Florida or another state on the Gulf, America sure as hell wouldn't stand for it.

Come on the marrocans want to steal spanish territory, that is a very good reason to chase them off. Just load 4 f/a-18's (the spanish have them) Up with their maximum compliment of mk82's and bomb the crap out of the 8 invaders on the island in a night raid. Then just load the island full of dynamite and blast it into rubble seeing how it isnt worth defending. Its 8 guys in tents ...... just dump 48 mk-82's on the island and they will either be dead or very willing to leave in a hurry.

Yeah, right. The evil red hordes and their muslim allies once more want the destruction of the motherland. C'mon don't make me laugh.

That's right, they can't be so crazy. How much time would it take for our amraam armed av-8b harrier II+ and f/a-18's to shoot down their 4 fighter squadrons of mirage f1's and f-5 tigers? Also our navy is vastly superior, frigates, submarines, a vtol carrier and aegis capable frigates agains patrol boats. The army is better equiped and trained, and bigger.

At Spanish army forums, people directly involved on the zone says that Moroccan army ships have been seen near Chafarinas (Also small spanish islands near Morocco but with permanet detached soldiers there), the soldier reporting on the forum says that the corbette was several hours at 1 mile of the coast, and they are on high alert status.

A journalist boat closins to the Perejil Island was chased by a Moroccan ligth corbette till it reached the harbour of Ceuta.

Also more Moroccan ships have been sougth near spanish places over the "estrecho".

It seems that they are trying to provoke a Spanish hard response (The ship near Chafarinas was in real danger, is not safe to close to armed soldiers in such a situation).

One thing that has surprised me is that the Moroccan press has not published nothing yet.

Desperation, bad economy, country on the brink of major problems,a little pissed/jealous at your neighbors, and throw in crazy you basically have the start of 90% of the conflicts that we've seen in the last 50 years.

Desperate people do desperate things to get out of the hole thier in. Would'nt surprise me even if Moroccos who are out gunned and manned escalates this, some people don't know when thier beat. confused.gif

lol, that's old news. That fucker, Gil is no longer the mayor of Marbella, he was judged over a corruption scandal (he spent a few days in prision) and he resigned.

Yep, i've seen the video on tv. It was a Television Espańola team. They were reccording the patrol boat, and it tried to catch them. The journalists fleed and broadcasted a mayday call.

Yep. "Accidents" could happen. When a few Guardia Civil men disembarked on Perejil island to ask the Morocco soldiers what was going on, they were told to leave, because their rifles might fire "by accident" tounge.gif

Its a rock, people. Noone even lives on it. It has no natural resources, and its, well, its a friggin rock! Wake up people! Youre saying that you will go to war just so that in the future, noone else will try to take away any more of your precious little rocks? I would understand if the rock was a bit closer to Spain, but I mean cmon its what in sight of the Morroccan coast? And one squad of troops. Korea and North Korea just had a naval skirmish that killed about 50 people. If one squad of troops invaded our territory, especially if its a small rock, I would just laugh, and laugh, and laugh, then Id exhaust all diplomatic routes, and then Id just target a few cluster bombs on said rock (maybe napalm) and then we'd have some fun.

I know it's a just a rock and i agree it's not worth even one human live. The problem is, lot's of people in Spain (including possibly the government) think the country's pride is at risk, and they are more than willing to go into war (and they know Morocco is not much of a challenge to our armed forces). Also lot's of people here are racists and hate people from Morocco. I don't know what will happen, but the fact that the Spanish President has less brains than a piece of granite and is one of that guys who talk about the pride of the motherland and shit like that doesn't give me a lot of hope.

It might be located off the cost of spain but this little rock is filled with tons of diamonds and gold, didnt you know. If I would be spain I would just give a fuck. What the hell, after all it is just a rock they conquered and they know it themselves. The spanish just have be able to tolerate this provokation, then the world will laugh at the "great Marocon heroism in the great 2002 offense"!

But the problem now is the great great spanish pride that often makes things worse for them then they are!

Yep, and when those cluster bombs hit, then you have your war, and a lot of people die. Not worth it? I actually agree wholeheartedly. But I also understand that the only real way to prevent those deaths was not to invade that f*cking miserable rock in the first place.

And if you think the USA would just laugh off such a piffling invasion, you don't know your own country. It can't give any diplomatic concessions that would profit the invader; that's opening the door to more of the same in future. So basically, all it can do is tell the invader to get off its turf, period.

And if the invader doesn't want to go...

it's not just a rock. you can claim sea within 12 nautical miles of your land as your soverignty. and that makes shit load of difference, i guess.

Sadico-"lol, that's old news. "

heh- havent really kept up on european politics lately-

im glad to hear this, though i swear when i went there last winter someone told me Gil was still mayor of Marbella (hes been arrested since this?)

Residuum- "Hey I didn't know Spain had territory on the African Continent."

~I didnt know Spain had territory in Africa either until i first went to south spain (on a lot of general maps its not marked well or at all)

Lilwillie- you may have been right in suggesting that the date is important... this made the front page of The Daily Telegraph (UK) which suggested that the island was invaded to celebrate King Mohammeds (of Morocco) wedding (or a wedding present). A strange reason admittedly, but considering hes the absolute ruler maybe not so strange....

Is this reason reported in Spain also?

I dont think there will be war, Spain would be judged harshly by the EU for (counter) attacking in force and the Spanish government knows this

Morroco also has terrible problems with asylum seekers escaping to Spain.

And he maybe have less brains than you (which i don´t think so) but at least defends his country...

oh yeah and let´s give them that tiny island, then maybe we could give them also Ceuta and melilla.

just because I don't mention it doesn't mean I don't know. That news is well circulated here in US too. AFAIK one of deputy from AQ was captured(a.k.a. the Bear; for his massive body size)

but I highly doubt sending your troops to a rocky isle will do you any good. AQ guys use their native passports to legally enter countries.

Spain has sent warships to the area. Saying "they will not tolerate the Moroccan presence".
