Please tell me i did the right thing?

Recommended Posts

smile.gif

basicly, while i was ordering resistance, i took the decision to RE-order the original OFP Gold edition, reason? well, i was worried that the scratches on the original cd might5 eventually make the disk totally useless. and theres always the fact that OFP, will not be maufactured for much longer,.

So i ask,, was buying the game a second time for backup purposes a good idea?

(bear in mind i dont have money to fling around) sad.gif

The BIS CD-protection is very close to being cracked. If not already cracked.

But buying a second OPF is definitly worth it. The game is so revolutionary that having an un-opened package of it will be worth a lot later on.

But BIS might release a package that includes Original, Gold and Res all in one later on.

Why are you complaining? When this happens within a year (in aus), i will definetly buy it. It's just a shame games companies don't & won't do this (which i think is partially due to pirating, I think it really is due to bigger profits and rising development costs).

are you for real! wow.gif How could you?

b.t.w. : Did you know the x-box was incredibly close to the ultimate dread word.... Recall? This was because of the way the x-box read the disk and it had something to do with the positioning or something like that which i forget. So it may not be you fault (or younger siblings tounge.gif ) for scratching your prized copy of halo.

Make yourself a copy of the origional OFP disk and then destroy the origional (its nearly dead anyway). Technally this is not piracy and i think that Licence agreements state that you can make a backup copy of the software.

Well of course it's a good thing to support a game company that gave us this game. If you only had the original game, the extra expense for the combined pack isn't that much more than the prize for buying just the addon. In that case I'd say it was worth it. But if you had bought Red Hammer before, I'd say it was a waste  of money.

You can easily do a 1:1 backup copy of the original OFP CD with any decent modern cd burner (no need for cd cracks 'n stuff) and you only need the Red Hammer cd if have to reinstall it (so no real need to backup that one). That's 50 cents per backup copy - way less than buying the full game.

Save your money and get Resistance! Better investment then having the old game twice.

I've seen this thing at EB, it says it removes up to medium scratches off cds. Did anyone try this or has it? I got a few music CDs that's been scratched and I'm looking at maybe giving this thing a try to see if they'll be restored. Also, my OFP cd must of left my cdrom drive at most 12 times in the past year, and there are scratches on it (but still is being read by the cd drive). Do cds get scratched just by being spinned in the drive? I play OFP alot, and I must say, in the past year, I must been playing OFP for over 900 hours (over 300 days x at least 3 hours a day average). So I guess with prolonged use, CDs do get damaged.

I think I know what you're talking about, Die Alive.

It's a CD buffer. It sands down the CD until all the scratches are off.

It works like a charm. Even on heavily scratched disks.

Lasers in CD readers can engrave CDs.

A lot of Sony stereo's had lasers that cut right into the CD and made round scratch marks.

I imagine that CDROMs can do that too.

Well, doing a backup and cracking are two very different things. I just made myself a backup copy of my OFPR disk. Works fine, no crack needed. It's a plain 1:1 copy I use instead of the original when playing (like I did before with the original OFP). This is 100% legal (for personal use only).

But cracking the software, thus altering the code, is something different and (I think at least in Germany) illegal.

Operation Flashpoint is a great game, though I doubt 20 years from now it will be looked upon as a collectible. Hell, I doubt they'll even have the computer systems capable of running such a primitive piece of software.

Collectible antique video games ? Perhaps an unopened box of Warcraft, but who knows. Honestly though I doubt video games will be looked upon as very expensive rare-to-find collectibles in the future. I don't know why I think so, I just do.

Besides I'm sure in 5 years there will be another game with the same features as Flashpoint, only far better. In this market things tend to evolve towards perfection. Maybe Flashpoint 2 ? You never know.

Don't bother buying some expensive "special" paste to polish your CDs - just use normal toothpaste on a fine piece of dust-free cloth. It works perfectly, because toothpaste has some very fine grain in that polish the surface. I managed to save a totally wasted CD with toothpaste. Just be careful and polish out from the center in gentle strokes.

LOL.

Umm..ok.

That's wrong in so many ways...

But I know how it got started.  Some early changers wouldnt totally stop the CD before dropping it back into the tray.  If there was any grit in the system, the disc would get radially scratched on the bottom.

It's not the laser.  The laser has nowhere near the power to cut grooves in the plastic.  biggrin.gif

Ooohh!!!

That's strange.

We thought it was the laser because the scratches went in perfect circles around the play surface and in close proximity to eachother.

You'd make more money off Diablo 2 if you'd play it and collect items. Sell them on eBay.
