Is my ArmA 2 CO beginning to FAIL me ENTIRELY...?

Recommended Posts

Folks,

Bare with me as this is going to be a DETAILED write up, as I figure the more info you have, the greater the odds are of you coming to an accurate diagnosis.

Even as I write, I have my Norton Internet Security doing a Full System Scan.

I did a fresh install of ArmA 2 CO two weeks ago. I've been trying out mods ever since, particularly CoWarMod. Several nights ago, I endeavored to experience STALKER within ArmA's mechanics, and I struggled with getting the Conspiracies series of mods to work ever since. From the very start of using these mods, I've been having technical issues, and I'm coming to suspect that there's a lot more going on here than mod-construction issues. You can see what I've been initially struggling with from the following threads (mostly "missing" addons, even though I downloaded and installed "complete" mod packages):

http://forums.bistudio.com/showthread.php?94316-Conspiracies-Rising-Dead&p=2179520&viewfull=1#post2179520

http://forums.bistudio.com/showthread.php?123491-CONSPIRACIES-Operation-Evac&p=2180099&viewfull=1#post2180099

But a number of things have happened in the past 3 hours that lead me to believe that ArmA is failing me entirely. Here's why...

After the frustration of not getting the Conspiracies mods to work, I abandoned the endeavor, and set out to continue testing CoWarMod with other mods for Gunter's impending update. I adjusted my Combined Operations' startup icon's Properties by removing all references to anything dealing with Conspiracies, and yet the Error Reports kept coming, reporting the same issues as if I was running my startup setup with Conspiracies addon references still in there - but they were COMPLETELY removed.

So, I then took out all of the "@Conspiracies" type addons from ArmA's directory, and I kept getting the same issues. How is this possible?

I then started up the Combined Operations with a startup icon who's Properties were completely cleared of ALL modding references - in other words, its Properties were set back to the official default version.

After this drastic step, these are the Error Reports I received...

1. This was displayed within several seconds of first clicking on the icon:

ArmA 2 OA [x]

'AddedTankMovementOrderDirectionMarkers_Visuals_C_PvPscene' requires addon 'A_Crane_02' [OK]

2. This was displayed on the Main Screen, which was missing the aircraft carrier and its fleet; it looked like I was under very cloudy looking water

No entry 'bin\config.bin/CfgWorlds/utes.ilsPosition'.

3. I then tried playing the mission E02: Laser Show, and I got this Error Message within several seconds of the nighttime battlefield appearing:

Error: You seem to be an Operation Arrowhead Standalone user, but have not loaded @CBA_OA mod folder! Please restart the game and include that mod folder [Continue]

I was NOT starting up CO with any mods defined in the Properties window, and yet here was this Error Report being generated by that mod! Besides that, I do have the CORRECT version of CBA installed, because it's supposed to be "@CBA" if you have Combined Operations installed, which I do! It's acting as if I don't have CO installed!

4. I then tried playing another mission I know well, but this time one supplied by a mod, smk_anims_025_RC1. If my memory serves me correctly, this mission is set on Chernerus. I decided to try a mod-supplied mission because of the insistent (yet impossible) assertions from the game that I was starting up CO with mods in the Properties line. Here were my results of trying to play the SMK Clean Sweep mission:

ArmA 2 OA [x]

(x) Cannot load world''

[OK]

And then the game crashed to desktop as soon as I clicked on the "OK" box.

5. I restarted the game (with all of the applicable Error Messages repeating themselves), and tried another customized mission that I knew well, thomsonb's Flashpoint: Shapur v.1.14. This is an addon-free earlier build. I tried to Revert to an earlier Auto-Save point from the night before, and the game immediately crashed to desktop. So, I restarted CO, and this time Restarted the mission, and it launched properly. I played the mission till I was killed, so I went to Revert and I got an Error Message in a very long box that went off of the lower edge of the screen, and it listed all of the "...downloadable contents that has been deleted..." Keep in mind that I did NOT delete any content that dealt with thomsonb's work. I had to Ctrl+Alt+Delete my way to the Task Manager to force CO to shutdown. I restarted the game, Restarting thomsonb's mission, and it started playing, which is a bizarre thing to say being that supposedly all of its "downloadable contents" were deleted!

6. I then ended thomsonb's mission, and I was surprised to see that at the Main Screen, icons were displayed for my playing the game with CoWarMod, and several other mods, supposedly active (remember, they were all removed from the Properties window).

7. All of this supposedly "missing" content was making me very nervous, so I checked my Campaigns list. The ArmA 2 campaign was NOT listed (I was three missions deep into playing it before, and those Saves were now missing), Operation Arrowhead was properly there, the PMC Operation Black Gauntlet campaign was there (which I find strange, since I've never purchased it nor tried installing a pirated copy of it!), and so were Namalsk Crisis [sP] and Namalsk Crisis [MP], which I find unusual because, again, all of Conspiracies stuff was removed.

8. Off and on throughout this mess, I'd try the Editor out. No matter which island I tried loading, it took three times as much time for it to appear as usual. I'd place on single unit on the island, and then wait for over five minutes to try displaying the gameworld, only to have it freeze on the loading screen, and then I had to Ctrl+Alt+Delete my way out of it.

9.Sometimes, in the Task Manager listing of the Applications I had running, it would show ArmA 2 as well as ArmA Reinforcements, which, again, I don't even own. Why is it being listed there now?

10. I tried launching the game from the green colored startup icon for just ArmA 2 (not CO). The main menu was nearly a completely solid olive green color, with the most basic GUI I had ever seen. The mouse arrowhead behaved weirdly, and it was far easier to use the Tab key to get around on the GUI. It was clearly badly messed up, and I quite the game.

These are all of the "essentials" that I can think of. Please, if there's a solution for this, I am MOST eager to have it.

Thank you for your time and consideration!

Try deleting the ArmA2OA.cfg file in your ArmA 2 folder in Documents.

Looking at your quoted error messages, your installation of A2 & OA seems to be completely messed up. There seems to be leftovers from some 3rd party addons while some "official" pbo's seems to be missing.

My advice would be to completely deinstall A2 & OA, clean the registry from all leftovers and make a completely fresh reinstall.

I wonder if the OP has been installing addons in the engine addon directory?

I wonder if the OP has been installing addons in the engine addon directory?

A good way to break the installation, indeed.

However, there's another possibility - I found that if I launched vanilla CO with the default shortcut after a previous game session where I had loaded mods, CO launches with that same set of mods.

To prevent that I added

-mod=

at the end of the launch line in the shortcut's Properties window, so that my shortcut line now reads

"G:\ARMA II\arma2oa.exe" -malloc=tbb4malloc_bi -nosplash -skipintro -showscripterrors -window -world=empty -MOD=

CO now launches without any mods. If you deleted mods then launched with the stock shortcut OA may well have tried to load those removed mods.

As for the CBA error, what version have you installed? After v0.8.3, CBA changed to a 3-folder system. Any version that is 1.x requires that you have separate folders (for CO) of @CBA, @CBA_A2, and @CBA_OA.

And another point - (not sure about Conspiracies, never tried it) but the standard set-up for mods is to create a folder @modname in the main Arma directory (never in the official Addons folder). The PBOs and bisign files must be placed in a folder called Addons inside the @modname folder. So a path would look something like:

[drive letter]:\ARMA II\@modname\Addons

What's meant by "OP" in the above statement? I've been very diligent in creating separate Addons directories for each mod - I've never knowingly placed a mod in the default Addons file.

Things were working fine till I installed those Conspiracies files.

The listing of the "-mod=" with nothing behind it WORKED. I didn't get a single error message, but the aircraft carrier and her fleet were still missing at the loading screen, and I was underwater. The default ArmA 2 campaign was still missing tough.

As much as I hate even to think about it, I'm just going to uninstall the game, doing a Registry cleaning, delete everything that's left behind, and then spend several hours reinstalling everything again. Yuck!

Before I do, one question in regards to installing mods: from what I understand, the PBO and bisign files need to be contained inside an Addons folder, that is itself inside a folder who's name begins with an "@..." sign, correct (mod addons NEVER go into the game's own Addons directory)?

But BIKEY files go into the Keys folder that is part of the game's main directory, yes?

And all HPP files go into the userconfig folder that is part of the game's main directory, yes?

Just quadruple checking that I'm correct on this before I proceed any further.

Thanks in advance!

OP stands "Opening poster" which equals to "thread starter" = you. ;)

The @ has become a standard procedure initiated by the community. The very simple idea behind: Windows Explorer lists folder in alphabetical order. Foldernames starting with @ will be listed first and therefor easier to find, opposite to regular alphabetical order without it.

But BIKEY files go into the Keys folder that is part of the game's main directory, yes?

Correct. Key files are the counterpart of the bisign files and needed for servers. The game checks if for a addon is a related bisign file present and communicates it to the server. The server then checks if the related bikey file is present and therefor this addon is allowed on the server. Obvious for weapons and units, not so obvious for soundmods (or other clientside addons). So on the server there is no need to have the complete soundmod (which wouldn't make any sense), it is (should) be sufficient to have the key so people using the soundmod can connect to the server without being kicked.

And all HPP files go into the userconfig folder that is part of the game's main directory, yes?

Also correct. And again not a BI standard but a procedure that has been established by different mods and is widely accepted and used.

Why are you guys still using the "click right on shortcut" method which seems to be a pain in the butt and not something like "Arma 2 launcher v 1.4.1.0"?

You can custom all missions you play. You still launch without pause, screen, splash and you can still do the "-MOD=" for each and every mission you play.

Am I missing something here?

I use Spirited Machine's launcher (excellent), although I tend to use .bat files for specific missions where I'm messing around trying different mods Renaming the file after adding comments / excerpts from the RPT is useful in tracking & identifying conflicts, too.

Using the default shortcut with the modification described is simply the quickest & easiest way to launch the vanilla game without any addons.

Uninstalling, using CCleaner to scour the Registry, deleting everything remaining, and reinstalling, as time consuming as all of that was, the results have been TERRIFIC. I had ArmA 2 CO installed a year ago, and the difference in performance is incredible. My framerates with blur on were awful back then, but now, my framerates are MUCH smoother. And I'm still using the hardware I had back then.

So, unless this turns out to be a virus (and Norton came back negative on that), I'll consider this degradation of the game a good thing, in the long run.

Just to be safe though, I backed up the entire game on my external hard drive, without any mods being installed, and without me even starting it up. It's as pristine a backup as I can imagine. And with my firewire connection, far faster than reinstalling from the discs.

Thanks for the advice!

I admire your choice of external HDD connection, and your choice of registry cleaner software, but I'm less keen on your choice of AV software. Norton is useless.

What other product would you suggest?

I used to use Kaspersky, till they released their disastrous 2010 wreckage. My computer's ability to function was just about totally wiped out by it.

Is there free software that's better?

Is there a purchaseable anti-virus program that you think is better?

I use Comodo Internet Security - Firewall, HIPS, AV. The firewall has consistently come top in all the tests by Matousec, beating all comers free or paid. It's free and very good.

I also use RUbotted (Trend Micro) - free, excellent; Malwarebytes AntiMalware (MBAM), again, free and excellent. Daily updates.

RUbotted like Comodo IS is set to run all the time. I run a full scan daily with MBAM on start-up, before connecting to the Internet, & another before closing down.

I have ERUNT set to run automatically on every boot, plus I always run it before any instal/uninstall. I back up all registries. In the event of problems, just restore. Also useful if you do pick up a nasty, restoring registries from before the infection will knock out most if not all trojans. ERDNT can be run from the recovery console or from Bart PE, Hiren's Boot CD, etc.

PS don't ever install two AV programs. They can mutually screw up each other, leaving you worse off than none at all (since you'll falsely believe you're protected).

Thanks Orcinus for your input.

There's no rules about derailing one's own thread, are there? ;)

This has turned into something I never really thought about before. I'll wait till this weekend to make a decision on the advice that I'm getting now.

I've heard in the past that it's never good to have two anti-virus programs running at the same time. That you say the same thing makes that advice more reassuring.

What I appreciate the most about your list, Orcinus, is that you broke the required protections by type (so that there's no overlapping of potentially conflicting coverage), and you gave your top recommendation for each. Thank you for that.

I'm looking forward to see what others' thoughts are on this matter... :)

Well, all posts are supposed to be on topic; although the mods treat a bit of digression tolerantly, it might be better to start a thread in Off Topic (however, never having searched BI forums on these issues, I have no idea whether this has never been discussed, or dealt with ad nauseam :) )

Not generally. Typically we look that the thread remains useful for other people having the same or a similar problem so they might find a solution. In this case, solution path can be found within the first eleven posts so no problem so far.

If the interest is given to elaborate more about AV solutions and the pro's and con's, it might make sense to split the thread and move this discussion into the Offtopic section. If you wish, drop me a PM and will do so.
