Decius101 1 Posted June 20, 2012 I play Red Orchestra 1/2 and used to play Battlefield 2 mods. Im used to fun tank combat where it takes multiple hits to destroy your enemy. Is it like this in ARMA2? Do you have to position your tank a certain way before firing? Since some spots might be weaker then others. How many hits can an advanced tank take before being destroyed? Like a T90 or M1A1. Messiah 2 Posted June 20, 2012 It's a hit point based system with some rudementary damage boxes that allow for some/limited simulation of damage to key areas of vehicle (barrel, tracks, etc). In short, if you shoot at a tank enough times with a normal rifle/machine gun/hand gun it will be destroyed... eventually.
Decius101 1 Posted June 20, 2012 Limited Damage? So you won't experience you're tracks getting blown out and not being able to move? That is stupid, rifles should never be able to destroy a tank. So Im guessing it is also one shot kills in tank vs tank combat to, to bad. From some gameplay videos I have seen it looks like that. Taking all the fun out of it. It's free and it radically improves the game. It'll take it way beyond anything you've see RO1/2 and BF2. If you want realism in a tank game, do yourself a favour and a dedicated tank sim. OA is, at it's core, an infantry simulator. At that it is unparalleled. For the rest (armour, air, marine) it varies from mediocre to bad. However you can attenuate it through mods and/or TKoH. Messiah is absolutely right, one of the worst offences is the hit-point system.

Tracks can be disabled, along with other parts of the vehicle, but it's severely limited. Domokun puts it best, the game revolves around infantry combat, the armoured and aircraft simulation is mostly there to bolster and deepen that experience, rather than being a simulation in their own right. ACE goes some way to improve the experience, but at the end of the day the engine limits what you can get out of armour.

Well in fact Iron Front proves that it could really be much better than it is now, with the same engine.
Messiah 2 Posted June 21, 2012 Its still only goes so far. A half way solution doesn't really do enough to address the fundamental drawbacks of the hitpoint system used by the engine. But this has been discussed ad infinitum over the last 10 years.
anthropoid 1 Posted June 22, 2012 Just curious but, what would th 'ideal' system look ike anyway? And what is "Iron Front?" a mod?
Messiah 2 Posted June 22, 2012 Idea is a little broad to properly discuss, but the current hit point system we have today essentially issues each vehicle, person, object a certain amount of life. Once enough damage has ben inflicted on it (each weapon, bullet, explosion radius deals a set damage) it dies/is destroyed. The problem is that this system can't really take account for weapon penetration, HESH vs SABOT, body armour, where the round hits (ok, to an extent it can, but not in terms of the bigger picture) and a host of other factors that effect how damage is dealt. The ideal system should take account for all of these. And Iron Front is a seperate WW2 game, but based on the ArmA 2 engine.

Messiah 2 Posted June 22, 2012 I'm well aware of what IF has done, I still only goes so far in the grand scheme of things.
ProfTournesol 956 Posted June 22, 2012 I'm well aware of what IF has done, I still only goes so far in the grand scheme of things. But did you actually try it ? It's not possible anymore to destroy a tank by shooting with a small weapon etc. , and the penetration and dammage system is much more advanced than the Vanilla one, even with ACE. Not perfect, but much better. EDIT : anyway, i'm a little offtopic, aren't I ? Sorry for that.
anthropoid 1 Posted June 22, 2012 So is that a mod or a truly separate game? Looks like an ArmA2 mod. Looks great. In my experience, Russian produced games tend to be damn good for their era. One of my favs ever was Hired Guns: Jagged Edge, which was a Russian sequel to the Jagged Alliance or something. Too bad the company that made it seems to have gone out of business. It's a truly seperate mod...in fact it's an independant game by a studio founded by ex-modders and licensing the Real Virtuality engine.
orcinus 121 Posted June 22, 2012 Looks great. If you like that, check out i44 - a huge mod for CO that recreates the D-Day landings in Normandy, & more. Outstanding work by a small, but highly talented & very dedicated team. Oh, & it's free :)
