Is there any good scripting tutorials?

Recommended Posts

That don't go from you need a semicolon after a statement to really advanced crap in half a second, I'm trying to learn but most tutorials out there go from basic to advanced in like the second paragraph!!!

Seem pretty good. But yeah, as a newcomer I kinda agree that things do go from zero to 60.

I suspect there are a number of issues: ArmACO is fairly old now, so the community buzz has probably died down quite a bit. Guys like me, and maybe you too, who are a bit late to the party are a bit behind the curve. Add to that that: (a) the transition to Win 7 has more or less become 'complete' since ArmA Operation Arrowhead came out and (b) ArmA3 is now being talked about . . . Well, I wouldn't say the ArmA2 and ArmACO modding communities are 'dead;' obviously far from it. But rather those communities seem to be rather matured and most people who would take any interest in modding/editing/mission writing probably already know what they are doing.

In sum, it sucks to be a noob like us when you arrive late to class :p

Agreed I think we should team up and learn together by storming all the info presented and take turns teaching one another the techniques.

check out the mission editing manuals section. http://www.armaholic.com/forums.php?m=posts&p=54512#54512

looks like 1 of the best manuals links is broken from that page so heres the other direct path.

http://www.armaholic.com/page.php?id=4847&highlight=MR%2BMURRAY NOTE: even though its for the 1st arma, most code is still the same and same concept of how everything works. this is 1 of the top guides that most mention when trying to start understanding arma. myself included.

I'd strongly disagree with ArmA2CO's modding community only consisting of hardened veterans if you want to put it that way. :P We are/were, atleast when I was still active here and actively modding, pretty open to newcomers. I'd strongly recommend Murrays Editing Guide, it's quite good at what it does. If you have some experience with other programming languages you'll find it very easy to get into SQF because most of it, at its base, is based around other languages. 90% are game commands anyway which you can look up here. also co isn't old, don't be that guy. arma3 isn't even released.

I have avoided scripting.

Instead I have placed a few ammo boxes on a map.

In the Int field of each box I write an order. sometimes it needs 6 boxes!

In that way I have done scripting without doing scripting.

I call it "Claytons Scripting" :)
