Before you install resistance...

Recommended Posts

I guess 3 makes the most sense.

I just don t get why all of the resistance stuff is so hush hush.

With OFP there were loads of screenshots, mpeg's, info etc etc ...

Is Resistance "top secret" ?

It will depend on wheather you will be running old OFP installation or OFP:Resistance (note: all "old" OFP features are accessible from Resistance upgrade, including old islands, campaign, SP missions and addons).

Suma, will they have seperate Addon folders too then ?

There are already addons ( little bird ) that are minimal 1.60 or will they just not show when you edit in 1.46 ( old exe ) ?

I think it's good to see BIS not giving us so much screens and so, because the game can be easily spoiled if too much information is given and besides I like good surprises wink.gif.

How can you be spoiled ?

I play OFP every single day from the demo release on.

And i have more and more fun with it with each week passing.

OK, folks, let's start the rumor mill running and not wait for Mister Ed to have his say.

chat.jpg

Suma has said that Resistance will have its own BIN folder and new sounds that will affect all of OFP if you play anything through Resistance, including accessing the old islands, weapons, etc.

Suma also said that Resistance's install performs no CRC checks against the old install.

Sounds to me like Resistance is almost a totally separate install altogther. That is, you'll now have a \codemasters\ofp folder and a totally independent \codemasters\resistance folder.

If so, there will be no file sharing between them. So, if you've been using desert or winter island addons in OFP, you'll have to install them again in Resistance. Same with missions, addons, campaigns, etc.

Now, another question remains whether we'll need each CD to play OFP and Resistance or just one of them for both.

As Ed Kock used to say "How am I doing"? biggrin.gif

Bad. (at least in this little part;)

Suma:</span><table border="0" align="center" width="95%" cellpadding="3" cellspacing="1"><tr><td>Quote </td></tr><tr><td id="QUOTE">Similiar file structure has already been used for MPTest.<span id='postcolor'>

=> codemasters/ofp/bin

    codemasters/ofp/Res/bin

There will be sharing for all the old stuff, eg. the islands and not changed models but of course only in one direction (as said before, original OFP will not benefit from Resistance). For the Addons, I guess that it will parse the old Addon folder as well as it will have a new one for Oprah only addons. The old OFP can't handle Addons for Oprah, so it makes sense to have seperate folders. Wonder whether there will also be new Missions directories...

Now a question from my side: will the old OFP be patched at all? (eg. for bugfixes)

I suppose they do it this way to have a shared base so that people w/o Oprah can stick to 1.46/1.49 to play online. (imagine some people update and others not; if they would change the original OFP those people could never ever play together again) This would lead to the assumption that at the moment no free patch to the Oprah version is planned.

Avon Lady, today is probably a bad day for you - maybe you should change input into your rumour mill? wink.gif

WhoCares is right in almost every aspect of what he describes:

*rusty cogwheels turn slowly inside InRange's head*

*lightbulb appears over his head*

Eureka! I've got it!

The magic words are backwards compatibility.

You could compare it to the PSOne and Playstation 2. Like, PSOne games work on a PS2 but not the other way. Same with all the hardware.

Translating that to OFP means that all the old OFP stuff will work in Resistance but the new stuff won't work in the old OFP. So if you want Satchel's soundpack to work you'll have to start OFP from the old directory. I guess. Phew. smile.gif

I still have some Questions:

If there will be a new Addons folder, will Ressistance look in BOTH? That would make the most sense, and would cause us to not keeping track of TWO (!?) Folders all the time.

Also, for me it sounds really weird that there would be new sounds in Ressistance, and not in original OFP. Either both will have, or none (For old models). BIS could maybe insert an option in Ressistance and/or OFP, where people could switch between different sound-"palettes"?

Will OFP get the new engine features, such as sun-reflection and the visibility-slider?

Will OFP Ressistance have some new anti-cheat systems?

Edited the quote to have easier reference:

1. Yes, that's what Suma quoted above.

2. It might sound weird, but that's what Avon extracted above from Sumas statements, and he didn't disagree with it.

3. That's about my question above; unfortunatly Suma didn't say anything about it sad.gif (However, since it will not support the new sounds, I doubt that it will support the other new features. That's what lead me to the assumtion, that it will not be patched at all...)

4. Don't know smile.gif

The purpose of leaving "old" OPF installation intact is mostly to maintain compatibility with "old" OFP 1.4x servers. This "old" installation will be unchanged and it will not have any new features.

Aha!

Does this mean that people who don't buy resistance can technically never get a patch to let them play online with Resistance level players because they can never be compatable (different graphics, sounds, etc.)?

Huh!?

So original players with OFP will still be stuck with the 1.4x version? And stuck with Directplay!?

I thought u guys mentioned earlier that OFP will be patched to get a new netcode as well?!

Not really, since those with Resistance still have the 'old' OFP with 1.4x. So if they want to play with those who not have updated, they have to use the 'old', unpatched version. But you are right, old OFP will not be able to join a Resistance level game.

nononononono Avon.... u fool tounge.gif

Its not my question. U see, BIS stated earlier that OFP-owners will be able to download a patch so they can get socket connection as well in their OFP as well as the ingame server browser. But now it looks like BIS is pulling out from the promise :/

So to summarize

1) Resistance is a backwards compatible new version of the OFP engine.

2) You will still have the original OFP version patched up to 1.46 after you install Resistance

3) There will be only one addons folder? (I am not 100% clear on this just 90%)

4) Sound addons will have to be patched separately on Resistance because they patch the game engine rather than just sit in the addons folder. (to be expected if you patch a program outside a permitted socket in the engine you can not expect the programs originators to wade through your code to make their new version fit yours)

5) Any addons that rely on a sound addon such as Satchel's Dynamic Range Sound Pack will not work in Resistance but you will be able to play them with your still available OFP original engine patched up to 1.46 version, ditto missions.

6) There may be, probably are, new sounds in Resistance (They are probably not Satchels Sounds)

7) If you are playing over the net and you play with the Resistance engine version you get the new net code.

8) If you are playing over the net and you play with the OFP original engine patched up to 1.46 version you get the old net code. (Obvious really)

9) There is not yet a new net code patch to allow OFP original engine to play on 1.60 and greater servers and there may never be (Not sure on this one at all so its still up for grabs Suma)

10) Any addon that does not rely on jiggery pokery with the Flashpoint engine should be 100% compatible with Resistance.

11) Everything here seems to be Standard Operating Procedure For Object Oriented Programming (Or SOPFOOP if you like your acronyms biggrin.gifbiggrin.gifbiggrin.gif )

There will be two Addons folders. Addons placed in Res/Addons will be visible only from Resistance. Addons placed in Addons will be visible from both old OFP and Resistance. If addon with identical file name will be placed in both Res/Addons and Addons, only Res/Addons version will be used in Resistance.

suma, what is the advantage of the new netcode?

Can you still switch in ofp:re between socket and direct play mode, or is it not necessary?
