ralphwiggum 6 Posted June 13, 2002 the Los Angeles Lakers basketball team has done it again! they won the world championship 3 times in a row. this is also the team's best consecutive winning streak. woo hoo! woo hoo! and for all those ppl who wants to point out the 'arrogance' of US calling their pro basketball final series, take a note that US basketball players are on average better any way

dayglow 2 Posted June 13, 2002 Go Lakers. The final was a disapointment, but I called it at the start of the playoffs that the western final between the Kings and the Lakers was going to be good and the winner was going to win. I was kinda hoping for Boston to make it out of the east, so an old school Lakers vs Celtic final would happen, but oh well. The Lakers have an unbelievable team and no one can touch them when they are on their game. Damn shame that I had to listen to Bill Walton through the whole playoffs, I hate that guy and can't stand him commenting on games. COLINMAN

Die Alive 0 Posted June 13, 2002 Soccer: get hit in knee, grab face, fall down. Get up, walk away Yeah, Lakers got their little dynasty going. They're probably going to win again next year too, unless the Kings or any other west team. The east can't compete with the west, not for some time yet. -=Die Alive=-

Espectro (DayZ) 0 Posted June 13, 2002 Ya well... at least we dont go out inventing our own sports every time we fail in those others play, just to call ourselfs the best
IsthatyouJohnWayne 0 Posted June 13, 2002 Exactly- i could invent my own sport ,play a few people then declare myself local champion. Then a some years later have a few national leagues set up maybe even two or three foreign immigrants playing and then declare the winners World Champions- but if it doesnt have at least reasonably high popularity in SOME other countries around the world then its a nonsense. basketball is played by a TINY minority around the world and has very little national popularity in Africa/Asia and Europe as well (although some more europeans play it-still a minority) so how can there be a credible 'World Championship'? why not call it the pan-american championship? still its fun to play

IsthatyouJohnWayne 0 Posted June 13, 2002 "LOL But US won Tour de France (was it yesteryear?) there's no way around that." HEheh sorry Gimbal its just when most english speakers say 'yesteryear' they mean it as 'a long long time ago' i guess you mean last year? so Americans look back to Yesteryear for their victories? still they won the bicycle race, so yes i respect US World Cycling prowess now respec'
IsthatyouJohnWayne 0 Posted June 13, 2002 A Canadian invented basketball, not an American. true , as i said a sport of the americas- just as Baseball is popular in Cuba, but the guy 'Naismith' something? was i believe living in the US at the time he invented Basketball(could be wrong) (though it goes back to ancient South America doesnt it?) Die Alive 0 Posted June 13, 2002 The top rookie draft pick this year in basketball will be a giant from China, seven foot-five inches Yao Ming. The Birth of a New Game While James Naismith was studying at Springfield College in Massachusetts, his instructor in Physical Education, Luther Gulick, assigned his students the task of developing a new recreational game, something that would provide relief from all the calisthenics and drills. Some time later, when he reviewed the responses, he found that none were complete enough to be adopted into a game. Yet Gulick chose Naismith's plan among the other proposals and helped him develop some rules. As James worked out the techniques and details of the game, he recognized that running must be kept to a minimum because of space limitations in an indoor playing field, and because of the roughness of the floor, tackling must bee forbidden. Logically thinking out the requirements, James developed the rules of a new game. Only a couple of problems remained-- what to use as a goal and where to find it. Thinking back into his childhood, James remembered the accuracy of aim needed in the game "duck on the rock" and the competitive throwing of balls into empty boxes or baskets in his McGill off-season rugby days. He soon determined the goal for his new game--an elevated horizontal goal. Slightly above the players heads for difficult defense, players would have to arc a ball with accuracy to reach the goal. This would emphasize accuracy rather than force to score. The game borrowed from lacrosse, rugby football, "duck on the rock" and soccer. The rules would be built around four fundamentals feature: no running with the ball; no tackling or rough body contact; a horizontal goal above players' heads; freedom of any player to obtain the ball and score at any time. The day arrived to test out his new game with the class. On his way to the gymnasium he asked the janitor if he had two boxes eighteen inches square. The janitor reflected "I have two old peach baskets down in the storeroom, if they will do you any good." James examined them thoughtfully. They were about fifteen inches in diameter around the top. With a hammer and nails, James attached the baskets to the lower rail of the balcony, one at each end of the gym about ten feet above the floor. After outlining the rules and selecting teams, the first game of basketball in history was played at Springfield, Massachusetts in December, 1891. http://collections.ic.gc.ca/naismith/ -=Die Alive=-

It's one of the most popular sports in the world. Every European nation has a league or leagues and it is played a lot in Africa. I know a ton of people who went over to Europe to play ( I played University in Canada and going to Europe is the only real way to continue your career). As for world champions name one team that would have a hope of beating the Lakers? I don't think any national team could come close. Now if the American soccer league had a championship and said they were world champions from it, whatever, but in Basketball it's pretty safe. second_draw 0 Posted June 14, 2002 Congradulations, the americans managed to win their own world championship. I suppose the rest of the world better let them win a game or two. On the other hand, we australians know we are the world's best in sport so we don't bother having any of our own made-up world championships. *second_draw activates flamewall*
