Hero540 1 Posted February 29, 2012 Hey folks! I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I got this in the correct forum. Anyways, I'm new to the ARMA 2 Free scene, but I've been watching videos and just generally checking out the game and I must say, I'm very interested in becoming a chopper pilot (or pilot in general) for a group that could use one. However, I'm pretty much a newb (so hopefully they won't mind taking the time time and helping me learn the ropes. Being a flight sim nerd I'm kinda geeking out about that aspect of the game. (Can you use a joystick to fly?) Can anyone give me some suggestions to help me get my footing with a clan/gaming group that could use a pilot? I'm willing to work my way up if I have to, and paratrooper operations interest me also. Thanks in advance guys! --Lee
celery 8 Posted February 29, 2012 You can use a joystick but it's not unheard of for skilled mouse and keyboard users to magnificently outperform joystick users. Probably the best way to learn flying is to place waypoints in the editor and trying to fly as low and fast as you possibly can. I haven't bothered with clans all that much so I don't know if it applies anymore, but just join a server playing a mission you enjoy, and if there's a concentrated presence of clan members there and they seem like a nice bunch, you can ask them about their clan to see if it suits you. Obviously clans that play Warfare and Domination have a greater need for dedicated pilots.

Thanks, Celery! I appreciate the incredibly fast reply! I watched a lot of videos about it and I know low and fast seems to be the answer to get into hot LZs and what-not. Being a chopper pilot really interests me because I think I'd really enjoy taking soldiers into the fight and evac-ing them as needed. Unfortunately I do not know enough about the game yet to really know everything about it, so your suggestion of practicing is a great idea. I notice medics are in the game, so is it possible to med-evac soldiers using helos and such? Again, I apologize for all the questions. I'm in the process of installing the game now, and will give myself some trials by fire. Thanks again!

If you are playing something like Warfare or Domination then anything a real world chopper pilot is required to do is relevant here as well. So, yes Medivac is one of the roles you can perform (as is troop transport, Close Air Support etc). Practice in the editor a bit then jump on to a public Domination server and practice there. It doesn't take long to get used to flying a helicopter in the game - you'll need practice to perform some of those combat landings though! Probably the hardest thing is avoiding enemy AA fire - you just have to be on your toes.

Charles Darwin 10 Posted March 1, 2012 (edited) You should check out TacticalGamer.com to find our servers in gamer use the filter option and type in TacticalGamer. You'll want to join the alpha server as that is our unmodified server. You can also check out our TeamSpeak server and feel free to register to the forums We play as a team or not at all, we do not allow lone wolfing on our servers, and everything is done to provide a workable balance between realism and the game mechanics usually erring on the side of realism. We play Domination on Alpha a lot but also more scripted missions which tend to be more fun and more challenging. As far as piloting goes, we do run courses in TGU(Tactical Gamer University) for basic piloting, Fixed-Wing and Rotor-Wing CAS, Air Assault, and Transport which I happen to be one of the main instructors for these courses. Unfortunately, we run these with the ACE2 mod which will require you to have CO installed as well. However if you catch me on TS I will be happy to run through a quick course on ArmA2 free settings. Forgot to mention, if you hurry we have an event scheduled for our Alpha server. Events are times when you will see TG at its best. We usually run harder missions during these events, since they are harder missions, team play and leadership go up a notch and you will have more fun than during any public game. You will need to sign up to play here: Tactical Gamer Alpha Pathfinder Event Sign up Thread Edited March 1, 2012 by Charles Darwin
