acoustic 82 Posted February 13, 2012 I have always enjoyed Arma II and all the greatness it has brought me but there is one thing that has always bothered me about it: There isn't many realistic long range firefights. It just seems like Arma II is always about shooting enemies in plain sight. Typically in real life, a Squad vs Squad engagement can take a awhile and be very intense. Each side is either covered by brush, in a building (which is possible in Arma II, to an extent), in a trench, ect ect. This makes it very difficult to know where, and what your enemy is. So the typicall response is to lay down a lot of lead in that general direction, thus creating a firefight. Islands like Cheranus have spectacular vegetation like this, but it seems whenever you start looking at a distance...all of that disappears (except for trees). It becomes more or less target practice if you have any kind of an advantage over the enemy in terms of weaponry (ie, ACOG). Then when you have maps like Takistan, where there is little vegetation, there seems to be no real sand dust effect at all. I am aware that there are scripts and other ways of producing this, but they do a very poor job at mimicking real life. I really hope I am not the only one that feels this way, please do chime in with your opinion. Just for support, here is some videos of real life firefights:
palanoid 0 Posted February 13, 2012 i remember the disappearance of vegetation at a distance has kind of something to do with the optimisation of game performance. i do agree in takistan when a bullet hit the bit of dirt in front of u,there doesnt seem to be any dust being kicked up. My_Shortcoming 0 Posted February 13, 2012 To be fair this would be good in PvP, TvT etc but against AI I'd feel it would be another advantage for them. Humans would have limited visual ability and be suppressed, where as AI would not lose that visual ability. Hell they can even see through trees half the time. .kju 3245 Posted February 13, 2012 The main reason is the huge RMB zoom in feature (it was a lot less in OFP). It makes spotting and hitting units at distance very easy with almost every weapon.
metalcraze 290 Posted February 13, 2012 (edited) According to Suma hat's not zoom in. You are in fact zoomed out in all other cases to simulate peripheral vision. To be fair this would be good in PvP, TvT etc but against AI I'd feel it would be another advantage for them. Humans would have limited visual ability and be suppressed, where as AI would not lose that visual ability. Hell they can even see through trees half the time. No they can't. If anything AI became too blind and deaf since a while ago. Try playing with AI in your squad and see for yourself how much worse they are at spotting than a human player. Of course when you go alone against 10 AIs one of them is bound to see you and report your position. And naturally when all start firing at your location one of 100 completely wasted bullets (because AI can't shoot for shit due to standing most of the time and thus having huge recoil) is bound to hit you. acoustic 82 Posted February 13, 2012 They would of course have to adjust the AI to adapt to these changes and such. I think if some attempts to include better vegetation (at distance would be a major improvement) and some sort of nice dust effect on desert maps, it would transform Arma into a much better simulator. Plus, PvP would be very interesting :D.
