Multiplayer/PvP explanation please...

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone,

I am just learning of the ARMA series and becoming very interested. First started playing multiplayer online games of this sort starting with SOCOM on the Playstation 2 console. As more and more came out and became popular, the "kids" began to over run the community. This seems to hit the spot for me. I dont not mind a learning curve, along with some ingame help and explainations. Seems that this is a strong and mature community.

Now for my quesiton....

Can someone please break down the different types of multiplayer modes that are available (in ARMA 2). Also include a description of whats involved in each one.

Example, PVP - 30 players, 15 vs 15, objective is to rescue and escort POVs from the opposing team. Other team objective is to stop team 1 from completing the extraction..... Something like that.

I remember the SOCOM series had those PVP missions. Very fun/complicated and involved team work with lots of communication with all players using difference gear set ups. Also just had simple Team 1 eliminate Team 2. Team 2 must survive in the time aloted.

Well enough with the run ons, if someone has the time to explain, it would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the forum Ikonn!

Since it's such an open ended game the multiplayer modes are whatever your imagination can come up with (assuming you learn to use the editor etc.) but for the most common ones read this post...

Armariffic explained most of it, also check the link by PvPScene...

There are no multiplayer modes in ArmA.

A mission can be anything an imagination of a mission maker allows it to be - as KeyCat said.

Multiplayer in ArmA is Lego SDK. You can make a mission where you are fighting 8v8 and then an invasion of cows armed with rocket launchers begins and you have to fight them off. It depends whether a server is running this said mission/admin is crazy enough to add something like this or you can run one yourself.

It depends on what you want to play too. Public servers tend to run simple missions that do not involve any kind of a teamwork while password-protected/clan servers are mostly about teamwork and run more interesting objective-based missions that aren't some "kill/respawn" - be it coop or PvP

What Beagle means is "first person RTS" where you buy vehicles and guns and capture towns for money while the commander gives you tasks on what exactly to capture/destroy and builds buildings/defences.

thank you for the information guys. I assumed is was all generic missions already made that you simply join and play once the "room" is full. Did not know it was as complex as one person creating every aspect of the mission. Seems very interesting and fun, but how many PvP servers are up at a given time? Also how long does it take to actually start the match?

PVP is very competitive, but also rewarding and of course fun, I think you're looking for a PVP community under a proven and tried gameplay.

About simple PvP - from what I know DAO.nu runs a usual TvT server where you and your teammates usually fight for a town

Project Reality is a more complicated PvP (basically you fight for control points all over the map)

Usually PvP servers are marked as such in the in-game browser (you need to DL PR mod though to be able to play PR and it uses separate dedicated servers)

I'm not a public PvP gamer so can't help you much there but there's join in progress in the game so basically you can join and leave at any time you want.

In most cases only clans/"private" communities play PvP games where you need to gather before the game - since they play it in a more tactical manner with separate fireteams supporting each other, dedicated artillery units, dedicated transport squads and advanced radio communications - so naturally random people joining at random times is not much of an option. Public PvP is more casual and open so you shouldn't think too much about the above stuff if you want to stick to public servers.

If you want insurgency with 97 players like last night (50v50), then join the TG PR server.

Enjoy.
