Front Line Medicine on the BBC

Recommended Posts

Hi all

This series is well worth watching this weeks episode was about technologies for recovery.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b017x01t/Frontline_Medicine_Rebuilding_Lives/

Much of this technology is in other threads in this forum and some of the information in those threads is more up to date.

Other things such as "Pixie Dust" were threads and topics we discussed some time ago but is great to see some of the results from their application.

Kind Regards walker

I thought "everyone" knew that BBC's iPlayer doesn't work outside the UK, much like NRK doesn't work outside Norway. Which is a pity though, since I can't get enough of QI (XL) these days. :(

Currently BBC iPlayer TV programmes are available to play in the UK only, but all BBC iPlayer Radio programmes are available to you. Why?

If you are in the UK and see this message please read this advice.

Go to the BBC iPlayer Radio homepage

OT:

I cant see how people outside the UK expect to be allowed to watch the bbc iplayer, we pay for a tv licence each year thus we get extra's like this if we have the means, you dont live or pay for a tv licence in the uk, you dont get the goodies, that's just tough luck. :p

Don't get me wrong, the feeling is mutual. Just have to remember that most forum members here live outside the UK. Which renders any iPlayer links, along with the thread, absolutely meaningless to most.

It would be interesting to see, but that's the grim truth.

True enough, perhaps with some searching there will be a similar video of this topic, most of these threads are meaningless to others anyway, in the uk or outside. :D Though that's not saying this particular one is, haven't watched the video but anything that furthers our advance in medicine is a good thing.

We HAVE to pay for a tv licence just to receive a signal, £145.50 for a year, that's not on top of the £70+ I and most others pay for digital subscription tv (sky). at the end of the day bbc dont hand out freebies, get over it.

If the bbc used a .com I would understand your argument, I'm sure there are plenty of broadcasting corporations in other countries that follow suit, they're just not as well known.

Does this work for you?

public broadcasting fee in germany is 216€ a year a month and it's for TV and radio and you have to pay for having a computer at home since a PC is considered the same as a TV nowadays...and still its not bad to be able to see and hear german radio and TV via internet everywhere in the world. This Everywhere in the world is the best thing and the whole idea in it since a hundred of thousands of germans live outside of germany for prolonged time and you often hear of "I had my radio and TV shows on Internet".

Thats why I never understoood this BBC internet protectionism...what is it good for?

btw the link does not work me, says its not available in my region.

ZDF is one of the two major public broadcasting companies, i choosed it because it has the biggest online mediathek of all of them.

Hi all

It would be to the benefit of all were the BBC to bring in a licence model for the rest of the world.

I know that some stuff is available to BBC customers in the US. And that the BBC has reciprocal arrangements with the National TV stations of other nations.

I also know the BBC sells a lot of its programs round the world and that programs like this one and the other high quality material like the BBC factual, science and Nature programming, Dr. Who etc all make money that help pay for the BBC but the BBC has to update its vision and become once more as it was in its early days a world wide media player.

That sounds pretty pro-corporatist.

Hi all

other high quality material like the BBC factual, science and Nature programming,

They used to be, bit dumbed down and over PC these days. The recent arctic nature docs didn't show a polar bear making a single kill (audiences find it too upsetting). BBC3 is full of rubbish, BBC4 seems to be controlled by an aged Sociology Professor, the news24 channel is awful, no interviews, just journalists talking back and forth. They seem to think we care for their comment & opinions! Viewers find news24 better quality when all the front line staff are on strike lol. I hardly watch any BBC channels now, 2-3 items a week on beeb 1&2.

Next time I move house I'm not setting up another licence fee in my name.

Hi all

In reply to PELHAM I agree with you on the BBC news service far too conservative, introverted and cowardly and has been for about 3 to 4 years. Lack of leadership in foreign news department and its radio 4 today program attitude to science seems have contaminated much of the BBC. The sooner the staff of that program are packed off to the daily fail the better for us all, but as I said a return to the Attenborough era and the world service ethos would both return the quality to the BBC and its outward perspective.

That is precisely why I called for the goal of an international licensing model. It would also bring in additional revenue.

I would however suggest that the quality of BBC is better pound for pound than the other subscription broadcast providers one has only to think of dire drivel that comes out of sky. Though Sky News since it was taken out of the Murdoch's control has improved phenomenonaly. I would also point out this program is one of the more informative programs and that is the reason why I posted it. The fact that many cannot yet see it is no different than much US programming that is also posted on the forum, that also suffers from similar nationalistic and backward license models.

The BBC is not the only media with an antiquated licensing and copyright policy from the pre internet era. Things change, broadcast media is dying out and being increasingly replaced by the on demand media model. In fact about 90% of the stuff I watch and listen to now is streamed over the internet.

Kind regards walker

Thanks for the link. Looks like there's several interesting ones over there. Too bad there wasn't a clip, though.
