Squad Control

Hi,

I am a big fan of your series, but have always had difficulty with something. I can not set up proper attacks with squads because I can not tell them to hold position and open fire.

This is more noticeable as a problem if you trying to operate a platoon using the higher command functionality. I can set up many of the things in the editor, but that takes away much of the fun and challenge of trying to do it real time in situations that are not planned.

These are the squad abilities / options I would like to see in future updates of this game:

  • Ready [support] weapons
  • Hold ground, Open fire
  • Face direction
  • Execute order #1 at time A
  • Set sequential orders requiring time or prompts to continue
  • Ability to tell a squad to send only a portion of itself to do something

With these options it would be much easier to set up intricate attacks in game to unknown situations as they arise.

Essentially I am asking if you could expand the squad leader / higher command functionality. For all of these, I do mean set them up in game, not the editor. As an example, if you wanted to take a group of squads and clear an area, you will have a very hard time controlling them to work together without shooting each other.

Anyway, I really do like what your team is working on; keep up the good work.

The "execute" button will be nice for starters so they won't just rush following waypoints right away, but start doing that in sync when you hit it

Or better - after setting waypoints select squads with Fx keys and then choose the command "Go!". That will send selected squads executing orders but will not affect squads you want to wait before rushing into battle

The thing is - all of it and even more was there in CoC mod for OFP, but BIS decided to implement only a very light version of it in AA2

If it were possible, I would of course love to see predefined platoons, companies, etc. I would like it if these organisations operated as expected.

A bonus would be to include the options in the editor to see how they operate and make your own organizations that operate differently.

I would like to see that other stuff as a start though.

You can already plan timed attacks. Right klick on a given Waypoint to Edit his properties

I know you can do this in the editor, but can you confirm if this is possible in the middle of a mission on the fly? Cause i'm not so sure it is...

It is.

If you use high command as commander, then you can right klick on a given waypoint (on the map) and edit it. You can also set a specific time when the waypoint should be executed.

I think telling your squad to assault an area and then going back to make sure it doesn't happen until a set time is a bit clumsy. Also, its only in 5 minute blocks, full control of the time would be nicer.

This is more about the hold position / open fire.

another usefull command will be the scope of cover command (relativ or absulute)

(simple version from the military: from own position over sandtrack to group of tree [and the same for the other corner of the scope of cover])

It would be nice to have a cancel or undo command. Theres nothing worse than setting up all your ai in position and then accidentally giving a move order to the whole squad and not being able to reverse it.

Being able to set up multiple waypoints and have the ai wait until you give them the go ahead would be useful as well.

Having more detailed Move options would be nice as well ie. Being able to tell your squad to move at specific rates. Sometimes while under fire I just want me and my team to sprint away from the fight as fast as possible but they insist on moving very slowly because they were in danger mode.

I think the improvement that would improve the squad experience most however is making ai more aware of cover and actually peaking in and out of cover depending on incoming fire instead of just standing behind it. This would decrease micro management and increase survivability of your men so you would have the time to give them commands before they are cut down. Would also make more realistic tactics such as suppressive fire viable.
