IsthatyouJohnWayne 0 Posted June 4, 2002 Tex- IsthatyouJohnWayne? Is this me? LOL that used to be my sig advocateXXX- "John Wayne is American(was)" - NO S()IT ! i always thought he was Kurdish with that big cowboy hat. As far as im concerned having a big impressive monarchy these days isnt utilitarian- theres no great constitutional need for it. But its a bit 'magic' in an increasingly empty age and its continuity with the past and all that jazz. A genuine living fairytale (though not always with the happy ending) It flys in the face of global trends and modern logic It defies understanding and confuses foreigners Of course it brings in tourist money -but that arguments just aimed at British republicans. theres no real 'excuse' Having a monachy is a bit of madness.... and i love it! lets face it ,its makes no %$cking sense- Mr. Spock wouldnt approve Its illogical captain. But British politics is too boring and sensible, theres not many crazy people like in America, so we need something weird and impressive. The monachy fulfills that role. And meeting a Queen/king will always be more impressive than meeting a prime minister/president as far as im concerned -of course its really one big magic trick- but mostly it works. How much more boring the world would be with a British republic- just another grey EU institution drained of joy and the uniqueness

Politics _should_ be "boring" and "sensible" and if a monarchy helps to that, it's a good thing. I find it really sad when politics are turned into an entertainment show for average joe, all based on appearance and showmanship. I doubt Bush could ever have gotten above clerk-level in European politics Regarding my "be my guest" remark earlier: If a person think he will find great glory in dying, I consider it foolish by all means. I consider my own life more valuable to me, than the praise from a bunch of strangers who will forget me anyway when the next headline rolls up. For instance, I don't even faintly remember any of the soldiers my country has lost in war - not as names or faces anyway - so in my eyes they've just bought a blank lottery ticket and that sucks for them. I'm also sure their relatives would have preffered to have them alive rather than some posthum medal that don't mean crap to anyone. Doing a dangerous but important job is one thing - I have much respect in that - but actually taking a bullet or face certain death for the sake of glory ... fuck it.
