Arma II crashes every time I change joystick sensitivity

Recommended Posts

Saitek X52 Pro stick and throttle. When I got to configure sensitivity on Arma II, the game crashes to desktop or locks up. Also there is no deadzone adjustment and you have set a wide deadzone which means the aircraft doesn't respond until the joystick is pushed quite far. Not very impressive in a military sim. These are not problems I experience on MS Simulator X or DCS A10.

I posted this in the problems section but no response in 3 days so I'm trying here.

I guess no one expects to use HOTAS for Arma II which seems kind of strange considering it's supposed to be a military sim.

b-b-b-but...I like using joystic to fly....

As for your problem Feathers, i'm not entirely sure the cause of the crashes aside from asking if you're sure your game is updated to the latest patch. As for assigning deadzones and the like, you should do that with 3rd party sofltware that your joystick comes with (i hope it comes with something if my measly Logitec does).

While the game is a milsim, it's main focus is on infantry, and in ArmA2 the flying aspect still has much to be desired.

Also does changing any other control settings cause the game to crash or lock up? I know back near release I had an issue about hitting the Next button when assigning keys binds on the keyboard. To remedy this I just backed out to the main "key control" screen and selected the bind I wanted to change next. I don't have this issue anymore, but you could be suffering from similar issue.

Game is on STEAM and the Arma II version is 1.09.78183.

I checked the game cache integrity via steam. I just tried adjusting the sensitivity sliders again and the game crashed back to desktop. I am able to make adjustments in MS Sim X ok.

Going back into the options section I tried editing other control settings for keyboard and it doesn't crash. I can also assign X52 axis and switches without issue. Then I went to the sensitivity section and increased X axis and it crashed to desktop immediately.

Bad Company 2 doesn't crash when I adjust sensitivity so it's an arma 2 problem.

Well I figured that much already that it's an ArmA2 problem just trying to figure out why.

On the subject of 3rd party software for you joystick. Do you have any running while trying to adjust settings? When you look at your Task Manager, do you see any processess under the Saitek name running. Could be an incompatability between it and ArmA2 that ArmA2 doesn't like or is unable to adjust sensitivity due to it.

Well I just tried closing down the Saitek SSD (profile editor) before running Arma2. Made no difference. As soon as I increased the sensitivity on one of the axis and clicked "ok", Arma2 crashed to desktop.

What I haven't tried yet is running arma on another windows 7 x64 install. The one I'm currently using is quite old now and there have been some stability issues over the past few weeks. Past few weeks is also the time I've had the X52 pro! What I do know is the x52 is capable of hard crashing the PC. There is one bug for example where if you load a preset config that has more than 15 characters in the name, it can crash. Hard crashing in this way is quite severe but it only happened once when I tried to load in someone's x52 preset for another game.

Regarding profile editing on the saitek X52.... Very disappointing. No provision for adjusting deadzone or reversing axis (bad company 2 needs axis reversal due to bug/bad design).

I have a X52 Pro too, no issues in OA/CO, though haven't checked vanilla A2 ever... Might do that in a sec ;)

X52 Pro here too. Win7 64bit.

Arma2 ( no mods ) ctd's for me too as soon as I click ok ( after adjusting sliders ) in the controller window.

Combined Operations ( with and without mods running ) is fine.

Aha! So it's a conspiracy by bohemia to make us by combined ops! :)

So at least we know it's not my windows install now then. I'm using the latest x52 pro driver.

I can't buy combined ops since I already own arma2 but does this mean arrowhead doesn't crash when you adjust joystick sensitivity? In any case this is down to bohemia to fix if they feel like it. I wonder if arma 3 will have better stick and throttle support? The joystick settings should be like any flightsim and include deadzone adjustment. Although mouse and keyboard is an option, I prefer to use HOTAS control because it feels more realistic and when flying it's much easier and allows greater control.

If you just buy Operation Arrowhead, once installed with Arma2 it becomes Combined Operations :). It's definitely the way to go :).

The only reason I started messing with sensitivity is because there is no deadzone control in the options. Every flightsim and racing game (worth anything) features deadzone adjustment. The default deadzone is so wide it makes the X52 into a digital on/of stick. It seems astonishing to me that a company who makes "battle sim" couldn't go the extra 12 inches and add proper settings for Stick and Throttle. I guess bohemia expect everyone to use mouse or a very cheap joystick at best.

I have the same problem with an x52 and combined operations. I adjust joystick sensitivities and click okay and it CTD's 100% of the time. So, moving to CO may not fix this, and it doesn't seem like it's only ArmA 2 related.
