I have heard that many spec ops, especially Navy SEAL's use condoms for some creative purpose.

Can anyone tell me what they use them for and how they use them?

I am talking about condoms that they use for actual commando/war type stuff. Not for using like us normal people do!

J/K.  Placing them over the muzzle of your weapon helps keep debris out.  Just remember, always use camouflage condoms -- that way, they won't see you coming.

We are using condoms as cover for personal dozimeter probe (geiger counter), for muzzle protection and for personal protection.

I'm not a soldier, but i have heard some ski masks refered to as condoms before, if that means anything.

We used condoms for wrapping up detonators when diving. Otherwise we used them for muzzle protection and gland to gland combat

Does using condoms on the end of barrels to keep out debris date back to Nam or earlier? I only recall them being used in Nam but I know in WW2 condoms were issued to soldiers, although of course they were the reusable put them in the wash with your socks kind

Also use them to piss in when in a hide site. We don't use them on the muzzle because we have muzzle caps that are special made for M4/M 16's.

The G3 has lousy muzzle caps - they fall out all the time. The outside is covered with some sticky silicon gum to which all forms of dirt sticks. Anyway, I used it, but some guys used condoms, especially when you had to go into muddy water.

Can they hold alot of piss, or do you need to use more than one at a time?

Also, what is a hide site? And why is pissing in a condom useful for that situation?

When you are in a hide site to do recon, you usually can't leave it because you risk being detected by the enemy. (i.e. watching a road for enemy troop movements. You have to piss in condoms and shit in big ziplock bags. It's awful. You have to carry all of it with you when you extract so that you leave zero residual presence.

If it was found it would be a tell-tale sign someone had been there for a longer time.

As for condoms, they are also used in some survival kits since they can be used as water containers.

IceFire: There are very few things that are smart or clever in the military. At best you get common sense. If you think that military service is something like the boyscouts, you are very much mistaken. The few practical things you learn, you get from the other enlisted men. The things that you learn have seldom any use in ordinary life.

For some strange reason I recall watching a documentary about condoms, it was a long time ago but if I remember correctly the way they test them is by filling them with water, they have to take either 8 or 16 (can't remember which) gallons before bursting

Testing

Perhaps the most impressive test is the Air Inflation Test which is carried out each and every day on samples of each batch of DUREX condoms. This is the test of elasticity and strength that involves a DUREX condom being filled with air until it reaches bursting point. Typically, a DUREX condom holds approximately 40 litres of air, equivalent to 9 gallons of water, before bursting.

Once electronic testing is complete, Quality Control samples are taken from each batch, filled with 300ml of water, and suspended for 3 minutes. Afterwards they are examined for minute fluid leakage by rolling them on blotting paper. If more than a small number displaying flaws are found, then the entire batch is rejected and scrapped.

Additional samples are checked for size and thickness. Further samples are tested to destruction for physical strength. Some of these samples are artificially aged at accelerated temperatures, as an assurance of their quality at the end of their 5 year product life.
