A question about 3ds

Recommended Posts

As the title says, I want to know if there is a tool or something to reduce the number of polys without screwing up the symetrical shape of the model?

Because I have an airplane model with 7000 polys!!!

BTW, I use 3DS MAX R4

7000 poly isnt really disasterously large smile.gif

Though if you are that concerned and you cant find any easy way to lower the poly count, its best to jsut start over again.

Now if your plane was 20,000 polys, thats when I would be worrying smile.gif

you need to weld, as im guessing youve used 10x10 vertice primitives which is a lot of polys :/ just convert them to editable meshes and then scroll down the bar and find the mesh bit, play around with the top modifier number (the higher it is the more polys it takes) should cut your models down a lot

I'm guessing you mean in vertex mode (where the vertices are highlited), but I can't find the "mesh bit", though I found a subsection of the "Edit Geometry" called Weld. I played with both the spinners and nothing happend. sad.gif

well, you can just shave off some jagged edges to smoothen the model out. But if you think the poly count is still too high, yeah just start again, and this time plan your model so that you wouldnt have that much polys. Just make it a very simple model at first, then make it a little more complex if necessary.

Cmon then Jimmy boy, get a picture uploaded and show us your work smile.gif

right i took a screenshot to show you (and you can also see my next model the ch-46 in the making)

what you do is:

1: select all the vertices

2: where on mine it says 4.0(circled) put yours to one

3: hit selected

4: if not much happens up the number to 2

(repeat until you have the right amount of polys or the model gets distorted)

doing the whole thing again is too much work, this is a lot easier

EA-6B_Ss.jpg

Its a EA-6B prowler

Rendered in 3DS Max R4 with the model smooth shaded

current Poly count is 6299

BTW, the model would look REAL ugly without the "smooth shading" option turned on

It is a really nice model mate, but what exactly do we need a radar jamming plane for in OFP confused.gif

Apart from Cutscenes I can't see any use for it?

EDIT: Can't access last link sad.gif Check access permissions?

Good poind...but it DOES have HARM (High-speed Anti-Radiation Missiles) biggrin.gif

If you can create a missile with a .cpp that goes after AA radar (ie homes in on Shilka) only, then I will buy it smile.gif

Otherwise, you are just a show off biggrin.giftounge.gif

Keep it up smile.gif

Theoretically it probably WOULD work...

It would just make all items on the radar disappear.

If it dosen't work, then well just have to use the 4 fuel tanks as bombs tounge.gif

It would be cool if you could do that smile.gif

I thought I might add that the airplane should average about 2500-3000 polys. MAX. Otherwise OFP would lag a lot.

Good luck shaving those polys off man.

Also you can have 4000-5000 polys (in quads) with the armored, or ground vehicles, but the planes need to have less polys becasue they fly and they can lag computer lot more.

I know that the BMP interior have 4000something polys and thats quite a lot but the planes alaways

got a lot less <---- remember this smile.gif

Erm, I direct you to http://ofpinternals.megaforums.ru for more info on this. BUT, the interiors have quite a lot of polys. The high-res third person LODs tho, have about 2500-3000 for the armored vehicles.

Remember, this is info I got off of OFP Internals. So don't come bitching to me if it's not correct. Although I believe it is, OFP Internals have made their P3DEdit so they should know.

EDIT:

I've just checked some of the models from the demo.

I looked at Block 1, since this is the highest poly LOD in the models.

T-72: 2890 triangles

BMP: 2206 triangles

UH-60: 2439 triangles

M113: 1803 triangles

Shilka: 2517 triangles

I haven't looked at the interior LODs, so I wouldn know about those. But as you can see, these models all range from 2000-3000 (Give or take).
