SpectreTim 10 Posted March 15, 2011 (edited) I was thinking about creating a dedicated training map for clans or anyone who was interested in doing various training operations. I was planning to have various firing ranges, driving courses, and a large base with an airfield and helo port. I was wondering what you guys thought of this idea and what other types of training areas might be useful. Also if you had any better ideas for a name for the training facility and/or island, feel free to voice your opinion. Thanks for your time Edited March 17, 2011 by SpectreTim
SigintArmA 10 Posted March 16, 2011 Is it a whole new Island or a pre-existing Island you'll play scripts/objects on?
SpectreTim 10 Posted March 16, 2011 I was thinking a whole new island so i could get it exactly the way i wanted
SigintArmA 10 Posted March 16, 2011 I see. Would be interesting indeed... hrm... might look Utes over for ideas of what to add or w/e and naming uhh... hrm... think it could be for where it is located (Fictionally that is hehe)
lone.wolf 80 Posted March 16, 2011 Yeah i would like that a lot, a training area, especially if you make various shooting ranges, urban, sniper etc.. Maybe also a convoy alley training ground...! Nice idea, keep it up :)
wolfbite 8 Posted March 16, 2011 An aircraft bomb practice range would be cool. Interesting Idea dude
ACPL Jon 68 Posted March 16, 2011 (edited) Ahhh, I waited for it. I was so depressed there's no good training ground I was about to learn how to make an island... But I hope You can set up what ArmA 2 milsim world really need (I can try to provide materials). Now, let's start. First of all, problem of many maps: they are too small. This shouldn't be small to give enough room for... 1. Big flat terrain ranges for: (should've marked distance) - Rifles (500 m) - SAWs (500 m) - Grenade Launchers (300 m) - Sniper Rifles (2.000 m) - AT Launchers (2.000 m) - CSW (M2, Mk19, TOW - to name a few; 2.000 m) 2. Big flat terrain between some elevated positions for Arty\CAS guiding (3 km from the middle to the possible FAC\FO positions) 3. Big little bumpy terrain for tank training\fights (dunes, little foliage; 8-12 km) 4. MOUT training village, small (think: "Street" from first Rainbow Six\Rogue Spear; 300 m street with open houses aside) 5. Bigger MOUT training "city" (like the one from "Operation Irene" Airsoft event, 1.5 km) 6. Shoothouse\CQB Maze (I suggest around three of them) 7. Big, bumpy forest and overally some Chernarus-styled environment (much forest, some fields, few roads, possibly some buildings or at least space for them; half of the map, 10-12 km) 8. Camp 9. Airfield nearby (Utes sized, eventually longer runway and more hangars) 10. Some decoration (villages around the training grounds, obstacle course, etc) Of course don't add any popup targets or ammoboxes (if it's even possible with island editor). Missionmaker will. Buildings have to be the open ones (mixage of vanilla A2, custom and mainly - OA stuff) so they are useful for room clearing, etc. Don't fall for "I'll set up trees 1 m lower then they should be" Brik mistake. Overally the map should be a [bigger, better and more useful] mixage of what we've seen at OFP's Lauserheide, Brik, new Phaeden map and some real European training grounds. You should also contact Phaeden about his buildings, they should be really suitable for MOUT stuff. Name? Simple. Training Grounds. With Phaedens new project, it'd set up for great training ground set. If You pull this off the right way, I can promise some missions. SpectreTim 10 Posted March 16, 2011 Thanks for all the tips Jon.
Hornedrat 10 Posted March 16, 2011 Cracking idea! Spot on with the requirements, the ranges have to be marked with distances preferably every 100m (you could initially do just one big long one?)
granQ 293 Posted March 17, 2011 yes! this is needed, I did this for OFP but was easier to throw a map together then (from my point of view). What I want is a obstacle course for vehicles, a river crossing, small stones and ramps. Its great to practice with your squad, but its even better when making addons to have a place to try your vehicles working in different scenarios.
ACPL Jon 68 Posted March 17, 2011 True, an extra river with a bridge or two would be great. You can add ramps in mission editor, IMO it's better not limit the usage of some areas. However extra "obstacle course for vehicles" sound like a great idea! (IceBreakr did something similiar on Duala) Hope my tips helped and we could expect something like that ;)
clawhammer 10 Posted March 17, 2011 This remembers me the Training Course Map that is included in the free Version of VBS2. That map looked usefull, sadly not portable into ArmA2 but can serve as inspiration.
