pacnow 11 Posted February 11, 2011 (edited) I'm about one and a half weeks into playing arma 2 operation arrowhead that I got on steam. I have spent half that time fiddling with controls and video settings. It runs not bad, but there is major lag and poor performance on some areas. My definition of poor performance is anything below 60 FPS. Overall it's good, but there is this one bug that's been annoying me so much, that I had to make a hot key macro on my keyboard for it, the shift minus key flush. The game will start lagging out intermittently, id say about every 15 to 30 minutes, this is mostly on multi player Domination 2 map that I've been playing, but I've seen this occur in some of the life mods. My frames drop to about 10 - 15 FPS and stays that way until I hit the flush hot key. I have MSI afterburner running on my g15 lcd screen and I can tell that when this starts to happen the GPU % LOAD goes down to 5%. Can someone tell me what's going on with this crap performance? I'm fairly experienced with computers, I've been taking them apart for 17 years, so I got my head in this but I just don't know what else to try. So without further a due here's the fraps of it happening. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fmbWZvushMc It looks like a LOD problem, because now that I think about it, when I look at something very far in a scope the model of it seems like it's poorly rendered to save space. larsiano 12 Posted February 11, 2011 I'm guessing you have not installed th latest patch that solves all these problems for most of us! At what settings and resolution do you run the game and what OS do you use? Also the 266.58 Nvidia drivers is best for Arma2 as far as i can tell at the moment, same goos for Intels 9.1.1.1025 chipset driver.
ArmAriffic 10 Posted February 11, 2011 i get it too, even with the latest patch and drivers; takes about 30 seconds to fix itself
pacnow 11 Posted February 12, 2011 windows 7, and im running arma 2 oa on steam, I don't believe I have to apply patches it should automatically pull the latest. I just put in another overclocked gtx 580 and corsair ax1200 psu, I'm baffled by this game, it still runs piss poor, excuse my language. Last night while a server was nearly empty it ran great... strange, I always keep an eye on my GPU % LOAD and it goes up and down... I wish someone at nvidia would look into this. larsiano 12 Posted February 12, 2011 (edited) Make sure there is no unwanted software running in the back and your HDD is defragmentated once in a while, what you could also do is use a cleanup program like CCleaner to clean up unwanted files and defragment the registry. Usually the OS becomes a bit slower after it has been used (mutilated) for 5/12 months greatly reducing the speed of your system, so i'm guessing that your install is not that fresh? Normal, but the above options will help you regain some speed? @Pacnow: We all see some drops sometime but the unit & vegitation draw delay is solved in the latest patch together with the latest Nvidia driver. I guess your problem is that while online the framerate can jump up and down quite allot. This is something most of use have and will be solved sooner or later. But what you must remember is that the framerate drop can be caused by a number of different factors like: Server and Network speed of both parties, duration and complexity of the mission and the fact that looking at some empty simple hills is allot more easy to process then when you are in the heat of battle. pacnow 11 Posted February 12, 2011 Unwanted software is under control, I keep poweriso, steam, razericon, logitech g15 app, creative sound control, smart security, and msi afterburner running, those are not even noticable with an i7 overclocked to 4.1... Arma 2 OC runs off a brand new crucial c300 120gb drive with latest firmware so not worried about defragments on that, and windows 7 im running has an automatically scheduled defrag of the 10,000 rpm occur every week. I think it has a lot to do with that server, I got into single player and was getting great performance even with night vision on, 1900x1200 resolution. xmongx 0 Posted February 12, 2011 (edited) "My definition of poor performance is anything below 60 FPS" game over man!, dont even bother. Im not sure about those low poly models though, your hardware looks fine and should not be doing that. Ive seen it before in ARMA running on a poor gpu. You may need to sit it out for some better GPU drivers. Try playing with the vid mem setting and see if it makes a difference. i run high. Gunter Severloh 4088 Posted February 12, 2011 60 FPS?! whats the average FPS you get? I average 25-30fps with a single core AMD 2.6 with nividia gtx 260, and 750psu, 2 gigs of ramm on win xp home.
-=seany=- 5 Posted February 13, 2011 Hi and welcome to the forum and Arma Pacnow. Last night while a server was nearly empty it ran great... strange, I always keep an eye on my GPU % LOAD and it goes up and down... I wish someone at nvidia would look into this. There is a problem with large Coop missions where the clients FPS are affected by the servers. Eg when the server is under heavy load (a new town spawns or there are 25 players+ on the sever) the server's FPS will drop to between 20 30 FPS and that is all any client can get either, you can see this by looking up at the sky to see what your max FPS is. This is also compounded by the fact that a lot of the time, 25-30fps in Arma feels more like 15-20fps. I think it has a lot to do with that server, I got into single player and was getting great performance even with night vision on, 1900x1200 resolution. Video settings:Texture detail: Normal Video Memory: Normal Anisotropic filter: High AA: High Terrain Detail: Very High Object Detail: VH Shadow Detail: VH HDR Quality: VH Postprocessing Effects: High Vsync OFF Your LOD problem may be fixed by trying the following: Put your Video memory to "Default" - this fixes lots of strange problems such as you are experiencing. You say you added another GFX card? Add -winxp to your Arma shortcut, Target line. Make sure your using the nvidia profile for ArmaOA and use the Nvidia Recommended setting for MutiGpu. You could also try -exthreads=7. Which should be used by default for a QuadCore but its no harm to try. If none of that helps, I would turn down HDR, Object Detail, Terrain Detail and AA at least one level to see I that improves it. I know you have a good rig, but most of these settings on Very High will cripple even a powerful rig when playing Coop missions online.
-DirTyDeeDs--Ziggy- 0 Posted February 13, 2011 (edited) I run SLI (v. well ! 2x 275s) without the -winxp in my shortcut target line, if it works for you, then gg! lol *reference http://forums.bistudio.com/showthread.php?p=1785835#post1785835 LOL the OP is if he thinks he is supposed to get min 60 frames, I notice the article in my reference has a 580 benchmark with a avg fps score of 52... I assume his (now) sli 580 setup is overboard for his resolution... Edited February 13, 2011 by [DirTyDeeDs]-Ziggy-

It gives a decent boost for me (As you can see by the screen shots) and there is no harm in him trying is there? At least better than to suggest some bs like disable PhysX. Grassy Area Without -winxp = http://i56.tinypic.com/wixa4j.jpg With -winxp = http://i55.tinypic.com/123xx21.jpg City Area Without -winxp = http://i53.tinypic.com/viogog.jpg With -winxp = http://i53.tinypic.com/29fzdsm.jpg
