Question for ussoldier11b

Recommended Posts

Hey USSOLDIER11B, what do you think about SPAM in a soldiers kit bags?? It has unlimited shelf life and I don't know how it tastes.

But would you reccomend it for travel or emergency bags?

I know you don't like MRE's, so would you say that SPAM is useful? I was just looking at a site about it, and it seems really useful.

There is a reason why they are called "Meals Rejected by Ethiopians" by people smile.gif

Hey Who Cares. I'm gonna go to sleep now. It's noon. But tell me more about those "trekking food packs".

I may find them handy.

I am not sure yet, I am still making plans about the trip.

Anywhere between Portugal and the Urals.

People seem not to like MRE's. Well, I haven't tried them so I can't comment on that. The Canadian IMP's (Idividual Meal Packets) however are quite good IMO, and in other's opinions as well.

We get commercial chocolate bars and gum in ours. The IMP has a standard format but the meals vary. The format goes:

1 bag of fruit dessert. This can be anything from fruit salad to sliced peaches.

1 bag of a main meal. There are different meal categories: breakfast and lunch/dinner. This can include anything from ham steak, to maccaroni and cheese, to beef chop sui. They all taste good if you ask me, and I am a picky eater. smile.gif

1 snack. Anything from a chocolate bar to chewing gum to assorted commercial candy.

Drink mixes. Anything from 'Nescafe' coffee to fruit drinks (usually both) There is also a dehydrated cereal or oat meal mix for the breakfast IMP.

Assorted condements.(standard with every IMP) Salt, pepper, wetnaps, spoon, napkin, and matches.

When I eat the whole IMP, I find them quite filling. However, the food does produce alot of intestinal gas and a characteristic smelling crap. (no joke) I havent had to live off them for more than a week's time, so I don't know the long term effects. There is no warning label on them and soldiers have done whole tours while living off IMP's to no ill effects.

Tyler

Tex, you just asked me why I bumped this thread.

The reason I did was because I was replying to "who cares" who told me to finish our conversation here in this thread because Placebo was trying to get me in some of the other ones.

You can track our fascinating conversation from first my "Yeah, great thing happen for me" thread about backpacks in this forum, and it continues off in the "Is BIS sleeping" thread in the General discussion.

Then it lead off into here, where we were going to continue it safely without Placebo here.

What about Sardines?? I just thought of sardines.

I think that they must probably taste pretty cool!

Anyone know what they are? Are they already cooked or do I need to cook them?

Wow, imagine all the protein they must have in them.

I think they must be pretty useful to keep with MRE's and snickers bars and spam when traveling.

Sardines are little fish.

They are cured and put into oil for your later gastronomical enjoyment.

I prefered kippered herring, but if you like em, go for it. Not sure they are that packed with protein, but they are pretty damn fatty, what with all that oil.

You fish???

I always wanted to know how to prepare a fish.

Once I caught a big ol cat fish. I had no clue what to do with it!

It was about 2 feet long.

And it kept on slapping me!

It broke my line and landed on the bank.

I jumped in and wrestled it. Damn was it slimy. I bear hugged it til I got a good grip.

It kept on fighting me! I punched it a bunch of times on it's head, but it kept hitting me with it's tail.

Eventually I had no idea what to do with it since I have never fished before.

I tried cutting it up, but it just turned out to become a bloody mess. I couln't get the skin off and didn't really have a clue what I was doing.

I wasn't trying to catch a catfish. I was going for one of the Koi there.

The ponds was this "Koi farm" and had all these giant colorful goldfish in it that kept sticking their heads out of the water.

They are cured and then packed in oil. So while they might not be 'deep fried' or 'baked' they are essentially cooked and you can eat them right out of the can.

Think of it like smoked salmon or sliced ham from the deli.  Neither is 'cooked' in a traditional manner..but they are prepared.

edit:

LOL! Icefire, that's funnier than hell! 'I landed a whopper of a goldfish' wink.gif LOL. Not laughing at ya man, it's just really funny.

Well, we go bass fishing, so there is a bit of a differnece.

Anyhow, heres how you clean a fish:

Make sure it is either dead or so near dead that it wont struggle, or that you have a very strong grip on the fish.

gut the fish, from its gills all the way down its belly until you cant go any further.

Then, (do this on both sides of the fish, and it is preferable if you have a very large knife or an electric knife for this) make a vertical cut at a 45 degree angle behind the gills. make sure you get all the way in, and then work your way to the tail, making sure you get as much meat as possible off the body and onto the fillet. work your way down to the beginning of the tail, when there is no more meat. then, pull that slab off, and clean that sucker off, and trust me, there will be all sorts of guts and shit on it tounge.gif

Anyhow, do that on both sides, making sure that you avoid the pectoral fins, and boom! you will have 2 big ass slabs of nice bass/catfish/whatever meat. If you want to fillet the fish (de-bone it) flip the slab over, with the ribs up. Then, do the same thing as you did the first time, but this time you are removing the ribcage from the meat. As always, try and waste as little meat as possible. And there! you are ready to have some fish. I would suggest breading it lightly and then frying. Then, lightly salt and pepper, and you have yourself a meal

For trout, the procedure goes like this:

Insert your knife into the fish's rectum and slice the belly open to the bottom of the head. Cut the head off at the gills. Now run your thumb along the backbone on the inside, scooping out the guts as you go. You can now either fillet it, or pan fry is as is and just pull the meat out of the skin when it's cooked.

Tasty tasty tasty smile.gif
