Resistance in pcg

UK PCGAMER quite like operation flashpoint. They did this one special feature thing where they did this LAN game around the office where they were racing tractors. It was funny to read.

"There are two difficulty levels, Cadet and Veteran, but they should be renamed Hard and Near Impossible." I think that reviewer didn't have the skill to play the game and that's why he gave it so bad review biggrin.gifconfused.gif

True, few games let you play as a soldier, tank commander, and pilot in the same sitting, but in order to enjoy yourself you must be able to feel comfortable with your controls and navigate the in-game menus intuitively. Also, being able to save only once during a mission is a huge misstep, especially for such a tough game. Gung-ho infantry wannabes may be incited by all the options, but they’ll probably be better off waiting for Ghost Recon.

Someone didn't play long enough. Good things always take time to learn. biggrin.gif

You have to remember that they also review the original release with no patches--just the program out of the box. Also I agree that the mechanized part of OFP is very arcadey. Not that it is bad, but it is a very big contrast to the infantry part of the game. If you expect any level of realism it isn't there. I don't really enjoy playing with the tanks and the helicopters for that reason. I find the controls really hard and the interface not that great compared to a dedicated sim of the vehicle. What I do love is the fact that they are all there together.

Again I pose this question: Why is it not possible to like 2 different games of the same class. I like different flight sims and I like OFP and GR. In many ways on does something better than the other, but they are both great games.

Wow, I must be a hardcore sim nut too then. Never knew that.

Bridges? sounds good. My question is: what will I use my CLGPs on first, the bridge or the motorcycle?

Sim nut? Well, uh, yeah, as a hardcore sim nut, I'll say that OFP has a long way to go. The infantry part isn't as realistic as the reviewer states, the controls are more confusing, and the game is far better than the reviewer realizes.

Hell, I look back fondly on those first couple of missions, where bullets were flying and I had no idea even where the enemy was. Just hide in a bush and hope to survive.

Yes wasnt that a delicious moment going into a freze in bush while a BMP rushes round squashing every bush and tree in sight like some demented darlek trying to find the bastard who sloted his opos in the the T72 with a stolen RPG! Not even daring to turn round as those sqeaky tracks get nearer and NEARER!

Must resist the impulse to kill, must resist the impulse to kill, if i repeat it long enough do you think i will be able to resist?, nope didn't think so.

I just read that review, wtf is that guy on?, Pluto by the looks of it, he probably died within the first 30 secs of each time he tried it, but then didn't we all?, i know when i first bought the game i was like "F'in hell" this is far too tough for me, BUT i hung on in there and now look back fondly at those early fetal moments. Now i can't go a day without my fix and thats after almost a year, the only game i remember playin that grabbed my attention for any serious length of time was ELITE on the Commadore 64!!!!!

I don't really care for PC GAYER US giving OFP a low score, but the fact that they keep GR a such a godly level and compare it to OFP, that pisses me off. I'm now a Computer Gaming World reader. F. PC GAYER US. mad.gif

Ok, this is what I've read in the last PC GAYER that I bought, March issue, i think. I'm posting it here again in case some ppl didn't read it when I posted it back in February. If this isn't OFP bashing, then I don't know what is.

===========================================

I just got the latest US PCGayer (I know, but here at work, they are now blocking all game-related websites - including this one - so I just got the mag to read and waste my time writing this post in notepad for later posting at home).

First off, in the letters to the editors section, a letter written by Tery H.; U.S. Army states how realistic OFP is when compared to GR, saying GR is just RS in the woods. He asks if "Were you guys sniffing glue when you played GR?"

So PCGayer comback is "No, Terry, we weren't sniffing glue, and you're right, we are all civilians - not a one of us has ever been in the military. Who knowns, maybe you've hit on something - maybe because we aren't Army Rangers or Navy Seals, we can't appreciate the inherent "realism" (please explain why the army boys have mmustaches) of OFP. Still, I challenge you to tell us - and by "us" I mean the overwhelming majority of the country who aren't in the military - what's so inherently "fun" about looking down and noticing an authentic-looking jeep radio? Moreover, what does a 20-year old kid who works at EB care about realistic minutić (assuming he's able to recognize these details) if the game isn't much fun?

Li C. Kuo, the editor who wrote both reviews, is a huge fan of all things military. He's the first person to complain when the firing rate of a gun isn't just right, or when a plane doesn't handle like it should in a sim. He played all the way through both games multiple times, and came out loving GR and merely liking OFP. Also, each and every one of the editors here at PCGayer has played has played a great deal of both games, and the only one we continue to play and have fun with is GR. Sure, maybe it's just because we're civilians, but hey, we're having a blast, and judging by reader response, so are lots of you!" Then at the bottom, they got a pic of a pilot ejecting from a Apache with a caption "Annoying voiceovers... pointless truck-driving.... must... flee... Flashpoint..."

Alos in the same issue of PCGayer is a 2 page story on how great Ghost Recon is and why it's the GOTY. Just total prais for GR as if it's better than sex for these editors at PCGayer. In it, they say "There was noise made on the internet about how OFP was more realistic game than GR. Having played extensively through both games and spent most of OPF bored, we could cede some of the tiresomely realistic debate. But in terms of gameplay, there's no comparison. GR never sold itself as the "flight sims of shooters." It's content to be a pulse-pounding action game. Compared to GR, the year's other military shooters were just a "Band of Brothers." They go on to say what they want in an expansion saying: "And we'd love to be able to use a laser designator to call in an air-strike on a moving convoy (ŕ la DF:LW)."

Then this one PCGayer editor/bend-overing sperm recepticle, DANIEL MORIS writes "I finished Ghost Recon. Not only is it the Game of the Year, it's the Game of the Last Two Years. I pitty the miserable soul of anyone who thinks Operation Flashpoint is more fun than this." Obviously, this man is getting sexual favors from the other males at Red Storm / Ubi Soft.

Hear, hear!

I always suspected that the editors of PC G@%% (I can't even bring myself to utter the name) was a bunch of low life, fudge packer, CS loving, morons. In almost every issue they have something derogatory written about OFP. Maybe they think they are being cute or something.

I bet they have been getting "donations" from red-storm and sierra for years. Corrupt, brainless idiots.... I get angry just thinking about them.

In PC Gamer UK OFP is constantly in the number one slot for best Action/Strategy game for the PC.

Review was 89% I think thats generally fair, because at the european release there were a fair amount of bugs, shoddy netcode etc. Not to mention there was no such thing as the Su-25, Vulcan, Kozlice, Bizon, G36, Steyr, blahblah Trabant and such back in those days smile.gif

It would be nice to see OFP re-reviewed in PCGamer UK in its current state.

"As realistic as it gets, Codemasters complete combat sim pulls off the feat of being both comprehensive and enormously compelling"

Shame there is no mention of BIS whatsoever sad.gif Really annoys me that the publishers oft times get far too much credit.

I have no problems with PC Gamer UK, in fact, I'd buy one here but they are expensive (over $15 as compared to the US version of only $9), and they come out over 3 weeks later than you get them over there. Right now, I've been reading Computer Gaming Magazine with also rates OFP very highly.
