infiltrator_2k 28 Posted September 17, 2010 Having heard how CPU resource intensive ArmA2 is, I decided to OC my system. As a result I managed to OC my i7 920 2.66Ghz to 4.00Ghz & it appears to be rock steady :) I've not tried any higher as I see no need. I'm sure a 16Ghz CPU is amble for ArmA2 :p On high settings @1920x1200 I'm currently getting over 60FPS with my spec (below) so I'm more than happy. Tonight I'll tweak the video settings to see what I can away with. Of course temperature will always be an issue on air, although now winter has started to set in here in the UK room temperature is dropping thus contributing to a cooler system. Where the heat generated from my PC usually makes me uncomfortable in the summer months, come winter it's nice & toasty, in fact, there's no need to turn the radiators on downstairs in my house :D

I've got two PCs in my living room - my main gaming rig and the HTPC. Along with the big TV, they generate so much heat that I occasionally have to open the window in winter, because it just gets too warm. :D On topic, how high did you have to set the VCore on that CPU to clock it up to 4GHz? Yeah, I have a 50 plasma in the lounge & that also adds to the 'recycled' heating system :D It's good to be green! I set the Vcore to a 1.35 volts, although I also had to increase the QPI memory controller voltage, as well as the DRAM voltage etc.. Cheers Ian
Janxy 10 Posted September 17, 2010 I set the Vcore to a 1.35 volts, although I also had to increase the QPI memory controller voltage, as well as the DRAM voltage etc.. Did you leave HT enabled? I can get my 920 to 4Ghz @ 1.31v core voltage, but had to disable HT to keep it stable.

I left HT enabled, TBH, I don't think you'll find a processor that's the same. Some seem to overclock better than others for some strange reason. I've also managed to get away with leaving Speed Step enabled
tpw 1709 Posted September 17, 2010 I recently stably overclocked my E6750 from 2.6 to 3.3 GHz and got a satisfying 20% FPS increase in Arma2. Might have to throttle it back as summer rolls around in the humid subtropics - no aircon in my computer room!

kremator 993 Posted September 18, 2010 Core i7 2.67GHz sitting at 3.90GHz very stably. OC FTW!
infiltrator_2k 28 Posted September 18, 2010 I guess the success you'll have overclocking depends on CPU, as well as the make & model of you motherboard & the features it has. I choose the Asus P6T Deluxe for its overclocking design & potential.
