timmy 0 Posted May 2, 2002 With kegetys new Hawk, i flew well over the speed of sound. I got up to 1025 mph. Unfortunatly, there was no "sonic boom" after i broke the sound barrier, but it cant be perfect. Has anyone else succeeded in breaking the sound barrier
advocatexxx 0 Posted May 2, 2002 Ehm, under STP the speed of sound is 331.45 meters per second ( +/- 0.1), which is 1,193.22 km/h. So if you travelled at 1,025 that would still be below the speed of sound. By the way, Flashpoint displays speed in metric system, not British, so it's 1,025 km/h you were travelling at, not mph. At sea level the speed of sound is lower (about 900 mph)
advocatexxx 0 Posted May 2, 2002 Speed of sounds goes higher with the temperature, not lower. At 20*C it's approximately 1,238.4 km/h.
Pukko 0 Posted May 2, 2002 If you climb to 30 000 meters altitude, and dive vertically - you should be able to reach speeds of up to 2500 km/h (if I recall it right, played around some once - with the original planes). I dont think the speed of sound is modeled - there is about 0 reason to do it in the original game.... But the speed of light is modelled - I broke the light barrier with my Trabant-Ferrari (new F1 team) earler today
advocatexxx 0 Posted May 2, 2002 You can climb to 30,000 meters in this game ?
r71 0 Posted May 2, 2002 You can go over 100,000 in the game. I did it in the mission editor with 4x just to see.
Antichrist 0 Posted May 2, 2002 Some cool stuff you can do with the Hawk

RedStorm 0 Posted May 2, 2002 That new addon Kege made.
Shabadu 0 Posted May 2, 2002 The speed of sound is modeled into the game, fire a rocket a hill a little way away and you will hear the delay, but I doubt this extends into the area of sonic booms.
Espectro (DayZ) 0 Posted May 2, 2002 So this means that if i go with more than the sped of sound in the game, and throw a bomb.... I will actually never hear the boom?
SpetsnazWarriorX 0 Posted May 2, 2002 No, you do NOT hear any kind of sound or 'sonic boom' if you travel supersonic or above. BIS just didn't feel like modelling it into the game, probably because it wasn't that needed too much in the campaign missions, lol.
SKULLS_Viper 0 Posted May 2, 2002 In real life, the higher you go the faster you go.The speed of sound is 740 MPH (1,190 km/h) at sea level. The speed of sound @ 600MPH(1060 km/h)at 42,000 feet (12,800 m).The higher, the less air resistance.(Approx)
advocatexxx 0 Posted May 2, 2002 Uhm yeah, we know. I explained it all on page
timmy 0 Posted May 3, 2002 has anyone tested and tried to go "1,190 km/h" and make and explosion, and see if the explosion noise ever catches up to you?
Guest Posted May 3, 2002 It is probably modeled that for the active camera there is a delay in playback of (radius to sound source)/(speed of sound). I doubt that there is more to it.
Snoopy 0 Posted May 3, 2002 if you have the 'f16' add on, it fighter goes 3000+ at the start. and i have tired going up verticaly intot he sky and made it up to 300,000+ in altitude. you can fly pass everon in a few seconds with the f16. o yea, you fly faster than a ffar rocket and missles with the f16. r71 0 Posted May 3, 2002 With my surround sound on, when I fire a rocket at the ground I hear the hit to my back speakers
Shabadu 0 Posted May 3, 2002 In kege's Hawk I made it up to 11270 and went straight down, accelerating as I went. Ususally u reach 1018 with 2000m to spare and don't go faster than that but I once got it to go up to 1040 but jogged the mouse by mistake and pulled up at around 1000. Does anyone know the units on the speedo? It doesn't say.
Yahiko 0 Posted May 3, 2002 Like people have said, the reason the guy thought he was going at the speed of sound was cuz he mistook the reading for mph when it was really kph.(right?) And besides, if you're moving at the speed of sound, how will you hear your own sonic boom? But I think I'm just stating the obvious. So where can I get the F16 addon? advocatexxx 0 Posted May 3, 2002 Right, speed units are in kilometers per hour, not miles per hour. In real life aircraft gauges show speed in IAS (indicated air speed) knots (1 knot = 1.15 mph/1.90km/h) Besides, as Yahiko pointed out, when you cross the sound barrier you don't hear your own sonic boom. As you fly past mach 0.95 you start feeling the aircraft vibrate a little. Depends on what aircraft you're flying of course, and as you pass mach 1.0 it's all nice and smooth from there. Aircraft that weren't designed to fly past mach 1.0 however will feel stronger vibrations and may have a hard time getting past mach 1.0. In fact, it takes a lot of thrust and afterburner power to make the aircraft cross the sound barrier, and the process of going from mach 0.90 to mach 1.0 is not as fast as many would think. Though once you cross mach 1.0, the aircraft flies smoothly, and you can actually ease off on the throttle and still accelerate. I'm not too familiar with the Hawk, but from what I read, it does't appear to be capable of supersonic flight, mere high subsonic.
