AI shooting through hills, houses and walls - Impressions of the game
chrisb replied to strelnikoff's topic in ARMA 3 - GENERAL
Regards servers and mods, probably why playing in a group is better, that way everyone tends to decide on which mod/addons to use. But I can see your problem concerning public servers & mods.:( I agree with you that its not the communities place to fix problems for the developers. But just a thought. Players play differently, some love to be a pilot and play sky warfare/combat. For that you'll need great AI pilots to play against. Some players like tank warfare, others small spec op type things, then there's the huge battlefield scenarios and so on. You can see where this is going. We play this series because we want to do all these things, or lets face it, we’d be playing games dedicated to those particular aspects of war, if all we wanted to be was one thing. The reason why most of us play this series, is the fact we can do all the various war-gaming things in one place. This series covers most all warfare types. So we have to settle for a middle ground concerning AI, an AI that can do all these things to a certain degree. After that we have to accept, that there is every likelihood we'll have to use other things to help tweak AI up another few notches if we want, even better, game-play. That usually means using mod/addons.;) The other night our group was stuck on an enemy island, having lost our lift out (heli). We had enemy trucks with search lights (it was night time), random motorised patrols, search teams, enemy heli's overhead and we were trying to get to the coastline to look for some type of boat to get us off the island. For the last two hours of that mission, there was not a shot fired, until the very quick end. But so immersive it felt like we were there. Sneaking around, worried at each step that we'd get found. Enemy troops (all AI modded), everywhere, searching every building, yard, wooded area, we could see. With us sneaking from place to place not knowing where they would search next. Thinking could that enemy heli be bringing in more troops, we had seen two heli's drop off units. We were slowly edging towards the coast. When we finally got to the coast, they had coastal patrols (boats). We had to take our time, waiting for the right opportunity to get a fishing boat and get out, it was very immersive game-play. Knowing that at any moment a patrol could stop us in our tracks. It was great, nothing like it in any other war game. Helped of course by mod/addons. (this was in A2CO). We got a boat, then got spotted by a ground team searching along the coastline, they couldn't do us much damage and they knew it, they only fired a few shots. But we knew why they weren't really trying that hard, they would be communicating back and sure enough, a heli arrived just minutes later. Then it was just a case of goodbye, we tried our best. It ended very quickly. That's why I play and don't think too much about what's wrong, when there is soo much right, once you get to a level of play with the right mod/addons in place. Really you can't get much better, well any better war-game to be fair. But, yes, you will need to use some mod/addons to get that really good stable/reliable game-play.:) -
Great trucks, thanks.

You'll wait much longer than a few years before they get AI anywhere near the level of modded AI. But enjoy the wait.;) -
AI shooting through hills, houses and walls - Impressions of the game

You just have to use mods for the AI: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=edQzO5oIg7o&list=UUzF27w20Ta55Eu96rcW9Bow These mods doing the work in these videos, are all available to everyone, fairly old, but still work provided you test. -
Similar to this. Not sure what mod I have this from,, think it was Japan forces, not sure. Its similar though. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lwIzYslgLXw&list=UUzF27w20Ta55Eu96rcW9Bow

Ah, nice. :)

Docking is very easy in ED and I play using a mouse a keypad. I played the earlier beta's, earned a few million and went up through the ships, then downsized to the ship I liked the most, which was a Lakon type 6 or the Cobra III. But playing through would be much better if there was a reason, i.e. you could do something with the credits other than kitting out your ship. Its really like a good racing game, get a car then work through some points to kit it out, tweak it etc. Simple gaming fodder. I like ED, but until it grows there's nothing there to keep you engaged for long. Evochron Mercenary, same format done better. Space Engineers or KSP great for proper sandbox games concerning the genre of space. ED doesn't add anything special. That said, neither will Star Citizen, its been far too hyped to live upto its release, I was told that earlier and believe its going to be true. Arena Commander is an arcade game really, the racing is well, lets not say, its like BI with its Karts.. The rest of SC won't be out until I retire, so...:j: I backed both, ED a little after SC, I put a few hundred or more than a few hundred into both the games in total. That was a mistake. I bought Space Engineers for £14.99 and have had the best time ever with a space game and that's without any AI presence as of yet. So there is nothing other than building or surviving to do, but its soo interesting its fun. Unlike the two mentioned. Evochron is better at elite play, than elite itself. Of course, Space Engineers is going infinite soon:D, PG everything, ships, asteroids, planetoids, stations, etc. Even some AI, probably rudimentary, but still both ED's and SC/AC are the same AI wise. Space Engineers isn't really about pew, pew'ing. Its much more interesting, build, survive, evolve, with other players or on your own, in a vast 'whole' world, sorry universe, where you can actually do something, ie real sandbox game. Anyone thinking about the space genre, look around before buying ED or SC. ED & SC (so far) are really not that good, maybe worth £20-30 or a little more, nothing major though. Learn from others mistakes :o . Buy SE, or get the free SE (no, the other one;), if you want travel), or Evochron for elite+ gaming, they are much more engaging. But Space Engineers, for me, has been a revelation, not heavy, but interesting. Hours just fly by, I already have a 1mile long exploration ship, waiting for the big new feature their adding. Plus of course a space train with track (doesn't everyone), space stations, mining platforms, smaller trading ships, cargo container depot, fighters etc. All built with no sign of boredom anywhere. Oh.. and asteroid's galore, ones you can actually mine into and build inside.. ED/SC on the other hand, yawn...:p

Its rated '7', come Christmas day we'll have crying in the stations. :j: Can't wait to sit and watch some of the new players docking. ;) Its the small things in life that makes our whole purpose on the planet, worthwhile.

Its great this whole project, thanks for sharing and to all the other people for sharing their work too.:) -
would you still buy any BI product ?
chrisb replied to sgtsev3n's topic in BOHEMIA INTERACTIVE - GENERAL
I have bought more, I re-bought the whole series again on Steam, plus some other BI titles that I also re-bought TOM & TOH/Hinds. Really only because I swapped pc's and it seemed easier. Plus I like supporting BI, even though I also like moaning at them at the same time. ;) But regards any new games they may release, yes, if it was to be back on track with the series. But of course that is not going to happen really, because my 'back on track' would be A2CO evolved. The next will likely be further forward in time, to include this new vertical type gaming idea, running up walls or whatnot. That just wouldn't interest me, not for this genre. If a new open world mil/sim type game was to appear on the market (maybe coming next year), and it proved to be a great game, then I would probably walk away from this series. But really that's unlikely to happen, A2CO has so much going on still, even though I have played thousands upon thousands of hours, it still feels quite fresh to me. There are many terrains, that I still have not seen 60% of in detail, so there are many years of interest left in it just with that. A3, not really for me, players say "well you can use this mod and everything is almost playable from A2CO". Well that's not really the case, many terrains just won't work properly. Plus the resources A2CO has, via mod/addons, is quite exceptional, many of which wouldn't work either, not properly anyway, in A3. Yes I would buy more from them, but at the same time, it would be for the game, whichever game that was, I would be buying and not the support I would be giving. Whereas I have bought titles from them simply to support BI as a dev, titles I haven't really played much ie TOM, TOH & Hinds, also the terrible CC, lets not talk about that. I love this series, its been a great ride, well up until A3 that is ;), so I won't be getting off that ride anytime soon. I play other games more now than I did (it was always this series I played for years), so it is good that my disappointment with A3, got me back playing other titles from other devs (mostly indie). I enjoy the change, but I always come back to A2CO, always, its like a habit I just can't kick, well don't want to really.:p -
[WIP] CorePatch: config patch for ArmA 2 OA
chrisb replied to goliath86's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - ADDONS & MODS: DISCUSSION
Your doing a sterling job. Thanks.:) -
Some of the mods already available for Outerra are very good. Its great to see this engine being seriously looked at for a mil/sim type game. I hope they can get it done, if they have trouble with finance, they could look to KS, make a great project and could raise valuable funds I would think. Outerra could, as many of us have said in the past, be the next great mil/sim playground.:)
-
Yep, Unity looks great, stunning. Not sure what that Time Anomaly is all about, sword to machine gun . Looks good and the coop will please many players. Might be worth it, just for a look around the city, can you just wander around or is it open, yet linear, if you understand what I mean.

Its a very corporate view they have towards refunds, but its to be expected, they are a PLC. Its not the correct view we know, because content that was expected, is not going to be there. But their attitude is not surprising. I hope they (FD) support the game, if they do, it could be great. But I feel if the reviews are bad or indifferent, then, well. FD are practical, they won't support it if its not selling well. I think it will sell well for Christmas, so that at least helps them get further down the road. Its what happens after that, they need ongoing sales to be good, for them to bother with the content for later (dlc's). They also need it to be a great on-line experience for players, to get groups playing together, for the servers to be very reliable. All of that is a 'must', to keep the players they do get to buy the game. But unfortunately so far, none of that is certain at the moment. But fingers crossed, it is a good game, lacking a lot at the moment, but many games are like that, even after being out a year or more. Just have to wait and see.

Certainly not hard to understand why some great mod/addons out there, are simply not shared widely. :(

[WIP] CorePatch: config patch for ArmA 2 OA
chrisb replied to goliath86's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - ADDONS & MODS: DISCUSSION
Appreciate every bit of this work and the work of many others too, for A2CO. Thanks. -
Love the support and work island/mod/addon makers are still putting into A2CO. Many thanks to all for doing that, and also to the players keeping it alive. A2CO simply the best game/s in the series, well that's my view anyway.:D This being one of top quality islands/terrains available, most recommended to anyone. Set the time just prior to sunset, take a long drive down to the coast and then drive along the coast. It just doesn't get much better than that in this series, just driving, superb, almost a shame to fire a weapon.. But of course we do..:p Thanks S@ndBob..

Had a good look around again. It really is a gem of a terrain, feels immersive and real. Thanks for your hard work and supporting it for A2. :)
