ArmA II: Operation Arrowhead discussion thread
Whoatherefatty replied to Tonci87's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - GENERAL
Hey flash thunder I agree the game could use more optimization however your system is a little old, especially GPU as already mentioned. I've seen Arma using about 70% of my CPU during normal secops scenarios(current specs in spoiler). So your processor is probably bottlenecking as well. I've found object, terrain and texture detail as well as view distance had a larger effect on fps than resolution back when I played on an AMD 3800+ and a 9400GT. -

That's the way I thought it was. Kind of like Oblivion. The playable area is only a small part or a state/province of the entire country. -

Umm.... No it wouldn't. Chernarus is a fictional country. If it were real it would still be the same size. So you would still be able to walk/drive/fly across it in the same amount of time. There are small countries ya know. I would say some of the biggest "realism" faux pas arma commits are parachutes falling out of the sky at about 10 mph, an archaic physics system which makes APC's do barrel rolls almost any time you cross a bridge too fast and the speach. Even with the problems you can encounter the gameplay, AI and general focus of the game is definitely the most grounded war shooter out there. Oh no you didn't just end my thread:p PS: my final thoughts on the AI hearing you. I live in nowhere town USA. Only about an hour from San Francisco but it's very rural where I live. On a quiet night I can hear trucks on the highway nearly a mile away to the east. And to the west at the base of the foothils you can hear dove hunters during the summer. 12 guage shotties from about a mile away. Just faint pops but as a hunter myself the sound is unmistakable. So I can see how they would hear the loud ass military vehicles from a great distance. Oh, and if you crank your speakers to the point that a helicopter flying overhead would just about blow them out you would hear a lot of distant noises too. -

I've seen that and looked over it once more. It doesn't explain how to make a unit engage the laser. It used to be they would shoot at anything you lased. A house, empty vehicle, friendly units, etc. Now no matter what I do they engage on their own terms and do not fire at all if they dont see enemies. The old way was so easy. Any OPFOR air unit would destroy anything you lased. -

Well obviously they don't function as I thought. Adding the laser designator in the editor gives the GLTDII SOFLAM which doesn't do it either. Anyone know how to do it? Was this feature removed from ACE or is it only made a little more tricky to execute? -

I've tried a few times now to get the laser designator to work like it does in vanilla arma but I'm having trouble and searching I find no info. Used to be you just place a spoter and friendly air units look for the laser and target it. Now with the kestrel 4500 they just ignore it. I've tried syncing, grouping, manually telling them to target the laser, etc and no luck. I've given the command to target laser, engage laser. The helo will call out the laser as an enemy laser but will never shoot. It makes my old demo of the designator not work:confused: The way it used to work Any advice would be great as it's almost theraputic to watch shit explode where I point. -
Considering homie in the screenie is wearing shades it shouldn't be that bright. It looks like you just crawled out of a den into the sunlight. I don't notice the sky being unrealistically bright in my game(1.05).

It would be okay if randomly a soldier would freak out and become insubordinate. I'm sure it doesn't happen to often but if you're gonna have a panic attack a firefight might be a fitting place. As it is the AI seems to respond to my ALL SAFE commands pretty consistently. Its when I place a behavior in a waypoint that I find they ignore it. -

Yep, he's just bringing up how stupid it is when people say, "Why don't you just join the service if you want all that realism?". This is something I read all the time from COD fans and Halo fans. I ask them why would you want to play a game with a real military(cod), real weapons, real technology against a real enemy(terrorist) and sometimes real wars(WW2) that plays out nothing at all like the real situation would? Your game with all these realistic elements is fine in an arcade game shell, but make the situation a little more real and all of the sudden you may as well join the military for that? Silly. If you like running full speed jumping over crates and killing nazis/terrorists by the hundreds that's all fine. If I like the fact that my 6 man team will get it's ass kicked 9 out of 10 times in an out numbered fight then that's fine too. There is room for both. You can play halo without joining the space marines and I can play arma without joining the real marines. -

I would say definitely work on the fresh air in part then move to a cooler. My stock cooler on my system runs about 5 degrees hotter when it's dirty(which used to take about 2-3 months for enough dust to block the heat sink fins). With some filters the problem looks to be less relevent. No point in putting in a better heat sink an fan if it's just going to get caked on dust anyway. -
Am I the only one who thought this was an April fools day joke?

Myke, I hope you aren't talking to me because I made it clear I'm not trashing anything and I'm definitely not using the word 'hardcore' to mean superior. The whole inspiration for this topic was a conversation I had with a halo/cod fan on a perfect dark message board. So it's not like I'm trolling a cod board and yelling arma is better. They said something about how cod is really hardcore because on veteran it's hard. I said I don't see hard as hardcore, I see hardcore as a game that has so much depth to it you can spend months trying to wrap your head around it. -
I have done this. The proplem is you can not place fire on the right trigger unless you use default controls. And default infantry has no lean and a poorly placed prone key.

But my whole point in posting, and I made this clear, was not to slam other more simplistic games. Someone said something about cod being hardcore and I said well actually, there aren't any hardcore fps games on console. I got flamed(of course) and was asked what I defined as hardcore. I said arma and posted a video. They weren't buying it and took me as an elitist. I said hardcore doesn't mean better, just way more depth and authenticity to the way a battle actually plays out. They said it was slow and boring. Oh, and I should enlist. Lol. -

Had some interesting things happen during the install. The display resolution changed a few times, the screen went vlack twice and windows 7 told me the device driver stopped responding then successfully recovered. lol. All seems well though. As my first test I trimmed this video down from 5 minutes to 1:14 and uploaded it(may still be processing). Nothing really exciting happens in the video but I am totally stoked to have made it because previously I could make 0 progress edititng anything without a lock up. This works perfectly now. I'll test a game out later tonight and report. Thanks again BangTail. That's two times you've improved my computer experience now. -

lol, i was about 5 when wolf 3d came out and I remember the pure joy of wakling around a 3d enviornment on my uncles pc. I can't imagine how exciting that must be for a young one today with this technology. -

Of course not, I was too busy putting my foot in my mouth. I couldn't find a way to update from the catalyst menues but I found 10.3 online and it said it's only 4 days old.... Which means Ive been way out of it since my version is in the 9s still.... Oh well, such is the price of noobism. Dl'ing now and will stress test in game later since catalyst always passes my custom clocks anyway. -

Gaming is the least likely lock up. I can play arma for 4 hours no probs then the next day insta crash. Same with the web, it's random and rare. Microsoft movie maker? Always locks up verticle bars within 5. Would this new driver fix help with the video editing or just 2d web apps? You know I'm a noob and need some splainin. -

ATI still hasn't said shite about the 57xx crashing during gaming... Web browsing... And most of all I found out I can't edit a video for more than 2 minutes without a lock up. The only answer I can find is to add after market heat sinks to the ram on my cards. Something I don't want to do. I want a driver fix dammit! -

That's your boy? Thats cute. I gotta raise my kids on arma. Lol. -
A real simple way is to place yourself in the editor as a SPOTTER. Then place any jet or gunship flying around the map. It helps to give the air units search and destroy waypoints in the general area you are attacking. Select your laser and point and click. Rockets and bombs should hit what you are pointing at. there is a video of me laser tagging just as I explained. You don't need to group anyone. They automatically use your laser to aim.
