Will my PC Run this? What CPU/GPU to get? What settings? System Specifications.
Whoatherefatty replied to Placebo's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - QUESTIONS & ANSWERS
Yeah, I'm not gonna do 30:D I just did 4 in a row rather than the 2 I did last time. Results are in. Test 1- High shadows on benchmark 1: 38 fps Test 2- Disabled shadows on benchmark 1: 39fps Test 3- High shadows on benchmark 1: 38fps Test 4- Disabled shadows on benchmark 1: 40fps Okay so more testing reveals that my initial results were just a result of the randomness of the game that is Arma. It's still interesting to see that High shadows had a nominal effect on fps:confused: -

Afaik the demo forces post process effects to be on and isn't really a good indication of how the retail game will run. I guess just remember the actual game runs more smooth than the demo, unless they changed te video options on the demo. -
Well played BangTail. It's like people are playing telephone with your SSD comment:p I aquired another WD caviar 1TB. Moved all arma files as well as steam. I have only tested arma and the stuttering has been halved. Still anoying though. FPS, no change. Didn't expect one. I will test Just Cause 2 soon since I had some decent stutter when flying fast and low.

I did a quick test last night on benchmark 1. Shadows off 39 fps. Shadows HIGH 40 fps. Lol, I only tested each once so I didn't get an average but clearly high shadows didn't have a negative effect in my quick test. So weird!

That would make sense to have the option given 90% of pc gamers probably use mouse and kb only. -

Zoom isn't broken. Pcs don't have enough analogue inputs to utilize it correctly. Use a controller and the left trigger is analogue zoom. It zoomz as much as you press it. -
QFT. If they cant figure out to hit the ground when being shot then they'll never figure out the proper timing order. Good call.

Well my intention all along was not to go bananas. I bought a pc to play 1 game and 1 game only. I've since bought a few more but Arma 2 is mostly what I play. With that in mind I wanted to build the most cost effective bang for buck system. My rig rang in at just under $700 all told. I suppose another ~$50 wouldn't hurt but I gotta say I'm pretty well please with my performance vs what I paid so far. Especially when I wiegh the cost if all that RAM or a $400+ GPU or the notebooks I see people buying.....

You should be in the clear OP. Most console war games are soooooo much more violent. Console war games have skulls ripping open and holes in chest with some dismemberment and a million times more swearing. Arma is only a little more violent than Goldeneye 64(blood stains and a little spray). No chunking, no racial issues(you know how the military has to demonize an enemy), and hardly any sexual content. A BFBC2 match is more graphic than arma2. There are some f bombs but they don't rub it in your face. It's definitely safe compared to the Hollywood style console shooters out now.

ArmA II: Operation Arrowhead discussion thread
Whoatherefatty replied to Tonci87's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - GENERAL
I would assume its just like any addon. A unit is what it is no matter the enviornment. It would be all aces if BIS made them automatically change to the right camo though. -
Threads like this make noobatrons like me :confused::confused::confused: Do I research and grab a somehwhat affordable SSD.... Do I spend less and crossfire my card hoping arma would use that extra memory.... Do I just buy a another HD and seperate OS from games(Hmm.... that would be the cheapest route. And yes, I have EVERYTHING on one cheap 'cuda). The only thing for certain is two of my memory slots have 2 gigs each in them and there is no way I'm gonna get another 12 gigs on the other two slots to run RAMdisk... And besides, I am pretty darn satisfied with my settings and performance and often I think spending a few hundred more to get rid of slight hiccups when BIS could probably just crunch crunch crunch to optimize the streaming more might be silly. The only thing that really bugs me is the trees warping beyond 300 meters. I have object detail VERY HIGH, terrain HIGH, texture detail HIGH, video memory DEFAULT, AA DISABLED, PPE low or off, view distance 2000-2500, 1920 x 1080.

After I got ACE I had to do some sniper training as well. You can set up targets on the runway on Utes. You have a good distance to practice level shots and there are surrounding hillsides you can use to practice shootings at elevation. Also I suggest practicing on cars or something that won't shoot back at first.

I've asked this too. Not many people have tried it, I guess. I would assume with a card like mine which is basically half of a 5870 crossfiring would give me a similar result to someone running a single 5870. But then I look at someone like BangTail still getting stutter and I think this game just wasn't designed to run well on... well... 90% of computers... So I wouldn't be surprised at all if arma didn't care about my second card if I did buy it. Funny thing, work has picked up quite a bit and I would more than happily buy another if I knew it would give me a decent boost:) and yes, I know I should have saved my money earlier and just got the 5870:o I just wanted to play arma for under $700:D -
Arma 2 in concept is my idea of a perfect war game. I only recently(within the last 2 years) became aware of this game. I was over in console land watching CODs and MOHs and thinking what kind of popcorn bullshit is this? What fun is run forward until the screen flashes red then hiding for 5 seconds, repeat. There was a time when console shooters were pretty good (GR2, RS3 & expansions) but with the advent of the 360 EVERY shooter started copying everything HALO. Recharging health: Check. Run 'n' Gun Hop 'n' Pop: Check. Overpowered mele insta kills: Check. About an hour of cutscenes and hollywood stories: Check. Then sometime in late 2008 I stumbled across an arma video on youtube of a few jets buzzing a tower. I clicked related videos to see all the fake news type videos:eek::eek::eek: I bought the game when it came out in the US and have loved it ever since. The patches have done a lot of good. There is more work for BIS to do however none of the bugs take away from this being the most authentic, immersive and visceral shooter I have ever played. I would recomend to any fps, tps, or even rts fan. Off topic, but I actually got freaked out by this game playing a spec ops mission I made that takes place in the wee hours of the morning. It went bad out of nowhere and I got surrounded. I was laying in a bush under the stars with about 10-20 russians with in 50 meters walking around hunting me. I can hear foot steps, I see silouhettes..... It seems like I have a window to sneak out of there then all the sudden the darkness explodes with about 4 different muzzle flashes. All I hear is whizzing, crackling, snapping, popping and I'm sprinting full tilt towards saftey.... So I though. I make it over the hump and see.....a beach. :( I said my last prayer and dug in. Less than 2 minutes later red screen.

^ Ever play with a controller? Movement is infinitely more smooth. Only downside is the lack of buttons. -
I could list 50 bad things about that other game and none of them have to do with consoles. You're grasping at straws there. We've been asked nicely to not mention that company/game anymore btw. This profits talks is nonsense. They would make money off this game if they released it. There is just a very large initial investment with a slight chance of little return down the road so BIS isn't gonna do it on their own. They do not have the budget or the manpower as avi said. Here is what a company with a big budget can do on the 360. Avi was spot on. Arma 2 could be running so much better on pc if BIS had the money to have twice as many people tweaking the engine and AI.

That was a whole bunch of typing just to say a 5 year old console is slower than a platform that releases new tech every 3 months, vick. How many octo core systems can you get for $199 these days? What? I'd be lucky to get a notebook for that? And arma could run on 360, don't be silly. Don't act like there aren't plenty of people playing this game on old AMD 3800s on all low settings and getting 10fps AND LOVING IT STILL. I was there not long ago and the game is still great even with a small view distance and crap visuals. Oddly, it's the gameplay that wins here.

Whoatherefatty replied to Placebo's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - QUESTIONS & ANSWERS
Well I usually have 35-45 fps on benchmark 1 and 20ish on benchamrk 2 with my settings. So I'd say with a lot of action a dip down to 15 here and there is okay. As long as the majority of the play is 25+. -
Being pro pc isn't a bad thing. The pc is the greatest invention humans have created. It's not going to be obsolete any time soon. Personally I'm pro gaming. So if it's a pc, a console, a phone, etc, and it let's you play interactive media I am all for it and wish it success. Think what pc gaming would be without consoles around or visa versa. Wait, let's not go down that road:D right now I feel like this game is an mp3 when a lot of people have cd players still. I want all formats to enjoy this awesome game.

Or perhaps another dozen patches or so. Who knows, maybe the engine will always be an untamed monster throwing a wet blanket over my CPU. Right now I'm always split between running mostly normal setting with high post processing or mostly high setting with no post processing. On Utes it's anything goes(almost) but Cherno.... She's just too big and I can only get away with 2500-3000km VD with playable frames per second. -
Some one mentioned how this is a pro pc board because it's a pc exclusive game. But honestly, the first pro pc comment was yours zipper. Most others seem anti console rather than pro pc. That's my only problem. If you think the thread is pointless don't post in it. If you think console games are all limited and sucky fine. That's why you're pc only. Stay out of this thread. This thread is for people like me and avi and a few other guys who gave up/got chased out of here who want a console version of arma. And don't take avi's comments to mean pc gaming is dying. It's just the truth that military based shooters are the hottest selling titles on console. A certain crap game nearly sold a million. Imagine a true milsim on current consoles. Pure success I would guess.

I remember one of halo 1's groundbreaking features was it's flawless transition from massive outdoor to complex indoor enviornments. It's a tough thing to do. I don't think the engine could handle you entering buildings and going up 40 flights of stairs like some buildings in GTA4. It would be amazing though. -
No one specified 16 firends that play arma:p I know about 4 people in real life that would play it and live/message boards would just find me the other 12. The 360 will always have a lower texture resolution and overall resolution when compared to a PC game running on higher settings. What do you expect for a gaming system that cost as much as my GPU?
