    This game is not realistic.

I thought I would come out of my hole to post on a topic which has a subject that I have only recently started to consider more when considering what is 'realistic'. Sound. Something that has put me off Arma and Arma 2, and so far Arma 3 - Yes I know it's in beta, but bear with me. Leaving the other obviously impossible to simulate senses aside, so far in the Arma series, we have achieved incredible immersion in the sense of Sight, the visual quality and tangibility that the latest generation of graphics tools and effects offer is nothing short of unbelievable. However, I don't feel that sounds has been given the level of attention and credit that it deserves in terms of creating a truely immersive gaming experience. Many current generation games (not just first person shooters) for example Company of heroes. Use sounds to aid the believability in the world, the characters, the props. One thing that sticks out particularly from my limited experience in the british armed forces, and every day life for that matter, is that a particular sound doesn't sound the same period at whatever distance you hear it at. period. Our ears are naturally tuned to identify the differences in pitch, tone, treble etc to identify the direction and distance of a sound. E.g. An approaching storm. The same goes for gunshots and explosions. ** At this point, I am going to say, that I am aware that the game is in alpha, and this is more about what I would like to see, rather that what we are going to see. ** The sound of a gunshot or explosion has a distinctly different signature depending on the distance from which it is heard. (the further the distance, the deeper and more 'muffled' the sound) The higher pitched sounds are drowned out by the distance and when heard from a greater distance, we are only left with the lower pitched sounds. The current implementation of reducing the volume for the same sound sample and some additional alterations, simply in my opinion, is not enough to create this level of immersion, and is a real killer when I am trying to become immersed in the world in which I am playing. This is trivial, games as old as Half life 2 have simulated this (simply using different channels for different sound samples). And in the case of Arma 3, the addition of different sound samples heard at different distances, can tell the player instinctively, the distance, type and level of danger the source of the sound imposes. I know this has been achieved by mods in the past, but I feel that this is a quintessential feature when achieving realism for this genre of game. I will be looking forward to hearing about the improvements to the engine that the Bis are working on and will keep my fingers well and truely crossed that the above is considered.
  2. I Just wanted to come out from under my rock to say, Holy Hell! More realistic weapon handling characteristics! Including Reloading Animations! Droool!
  3. Sometimes there are times when I don't want a mission to be 45 mins of map reading, maneuvering and bugging out ... this game will cater for those times! It looks fantastic!
  4. Would you possibly be able to post the Scans on here .. c'mon... share the pie with the rest of us :D

    The Infection

Hey, not bad, some of the facial expressions made me laugh, but I quite enjoyed it. Nothing like a good ol'zombie disaster comic!

South Park using ArmA sounds? XD

Wow, that timeshift trailer, I have never heard so many popular sound effects used. It makes media sound cheap when you know they have not used their own sounds in my opinion. In 28 Days later, the british Sa80's use the OFP M16 Sound effect (when they shoot the newly infected father of the young girl)
  7. This is one unhappy england fan! No motivation, no outstanding display of skill and discipline.
  8. First time I have looked at this forum in a loong time. I think the only real majoy enhancement I would like to see, is whilse Arma 2 Graphically is supurb, I would Like to see improvements that make it feel less Rigid. What I mean is that everything has a stiffness, an uncanny sense of rigidity that just doesnt feel realisic. This is mainly in respect to the animations, movement and weapon handling. Arma 2 with realistic weapon handling and animations seems like a pipe-dream, maye in the next version of the engine eh?
  9. Well if during the development this game has a quote as halarious as.. "Now as you can see I've taken a hit to head. Its nothing serious, but I am bleeding badly" could be rather more like "Now as you can see ive lost my steering wheel, Its nothing serious, but im spinning wildly" :D

China's Economy Growing: Welcome change or Danger

Alas, resource management and indeed sustainability is an issue for the entire world economy, not just chinas. heavens knows what will happen when Oil and Coal are depleted.

HBO's Band of Brothers: Pacific War

Though not quite as bold about it, I am starting to feel the same. The moments away from battle are not well defined, the moments in battle are not as defined, there is no sense of chronological progression. Im going to carry on watching it, but with a frown on my face as I do.

HBO's Band of Brothers: Pacific War

Yes I'm very much the same, they all seem to be wisecracking grunts. At least in BoB you really felt it when characters like, Hoobler died. And felt genuine hatrid towards the idiocy that Lt Dyke displayed and relief when spears took command. But I feel like im watching more of a documentary - you see the people who die, but have no real 'attachment' to them.

HBO's Band of Brothers: Pacific War

On toppic... I saw the first 2 Episodes. And, I dont know, its a very good series so far, but I'm struggling getting into the mood of the situation and the characters emotions as i did with Band of Brothers - It feels like there is something missing. Oh, and why did they do away with the Washed out colour scheme of BOB, that helped it look more authentic!

HBO's Band of Brothers: Pacific War

Ah i see many people are looking forward to it.... As am i.. But turns out its being shown on Sky Moves HD Which I must say I am absolutely Fuming over.. First of all.. I dont have Sky (Im a student afterall) And second, if i did have sky, I would have to pay an additional Subscription fee to watch Sky Moved HD. This is outrageous more-so by the fact that the Original Band of Brothers was shown for FREE*(Kind of) on BBC 2 .. SO there goes my plans of holding a weekly Pacific night on my 42 inch. And im not going to watch something this epic on my tiny Laptop screen from some sky viewers camcorder with tinny sound and them breathing behind the mic. Im sorry I am appauled by this Move and BBC's lack of willingness to keep the Band of Brothers Torch.

Laggy Laggy What a Hell of a Way to Play

*cringe* if only the words fit properly with the original, if that was the case, you could start an online phenomenon like Leroy jenkins

Cough this is an OFPDR discussion thread Cough* .. In terms of view distance, I dont think its necessary to have an overly optimistic View distance, as this is afterall an infantry simulator, where your view distance will be obscured by undulations and features of the landscape, I dont think its necessary losing performance over getting the possibility of a decent view to take a picture of. And as far as arma is concerned its very unlikely to have fully rendered model detail at distances of over 3Km.

I highly Agree.... THIS IS FICTION! I mean.. Lets look at a pretty little game called oooh let me see, World in conflict - based on real events but exaggerated to create a rather good game. Crimson skies, Yanks Vs Brits - Pure fiction, Brilliant game. OFPDR Yanks Vs China - Fiction, Lets see what happens. we have had 4 pages of this nonsense when OFP's campaign was essentially Bull anyway. They took a real life event, THe cold war and escalated it into a conflict. SO therefore I am going to accept OFPDR's storyline because it is Fiction and will be fun. at least its better then Arma's non-existant storyline. And dont forget the American forces and Chinese forces have clashed before, so I dont see why it couldnt happen again. But anyway.. just accept that its fiction and get on with more relevant discussions.

But I find this way of executing commands, far more intuitive and user friendly then reading menus and pressing numbers.

No TrackIR - This means you have to turn the mouse to look in the right direction. Correct me if im wrong,... but we've been doing this for years, every shooter his this feature, and I dont know about enyone else, but If im in a battle situation, I want to be looking down the sights of my rifle at the ready, I don't need to look around me when the enemy is right in front.

"Seriously limited and unfriendly mission editor on PC." And how, may I ask do you know that, just one sceenshot you cannot base your opinions on a screenshot. Even if it Looks less user friendly, it doesnt mean that it is not as powerful, the BIS editor dont forget has been Dumbed down to appeal and seem more approachable to a wider audience. CM editor is obviously more raw, and closer to a professional editing tool, like 3D studio Max. About trackIR, lets think about it before we start kicking and screaming... How many people in the entire gaming community own TrackIR? A very small percentage no doubt, therefore, It would be less useful coding and optimising code for a product that no one has. This would be bad if they didnt support a mouse and keyboard, but ... Duh.. but because TrackIR is owned by such a small percentage it would make no sense to support it for a mass audience.

Last time I heard there will be skirmishes happening elsewhere on the island, and you can see/hear their effects. Also if you do go outside this mission boundary, I heard that you will come accross random enemy patrols, Vehicle convoys and other Skirmishes, and your actions on these help determine the next mission. I read this in a preview from a magazine a few months ago, i cant remember exactly where though :o here is the closest thing to a source http://outpostgamez.com/game/29/opf/operation-flashpoint-2/
