Controls Scheme & User Interface Feedback
Iroquois Pliskin replied to HKFlash's topic in ARMA 3 - GENERAL
Well, you suggested more icons to be added around the main group of commands, I have reversed the solution - outer ring has main group commands, inner has often-used non-death sensitive ones. With the outer ring you want to open the menu -> swipe in the general direction of the command -> release the hotkey and get an activation. See Crysis 1 example footage on the previous page. With the inner ring you can afford more time to precisely position your invisible cursor. :) Pliskin King Assimilator. ---------- Post added at 00:05 ---------- Previous post was at 00:02 ---------- P.S. 1) Updated the CQB radial: Full resolution: http://i47.tinypic.com/of1v1d.jpg Only 2 partitions, "GET IN" & "MOVE TO", have contexts and are explained in the quote above. Doubled the number of commands present on CQB AI radial via the outer ones for the most used commands, so to order your unit to "Move" for an example, you depress the hotkey, swipe mouse forward and release the hotkey. Inner octagon contains often-used, but not death-sensitive commands (including something from ROE). Two ring octagon radial will require fine-tuning in terms of mouse sensitivity on BIS' part, size of the entire menu can be scaled 30, 50. Keep in mind this screenshot is 1280x720, and ignore the square - there's no octagon template in Paint. :) ______________________________ 2) Here's the ROE/Formations radial: Full resolution: http://i45.tinypic.com/2emom0k.jpg Since the CQB one contains "ENGAGE AT WILL" & "DISENGAGE" - these two commands can be replaced with something else on the ROE radial. Inclusion of particular commands, or contexts is fully debatable. 2.1) Updated, resized ROE radial: Full resolution: http://i49.tinypic.com/20py4ja.jpg Edit: On CQB radial: not for non-essential, inner commands, Nico, my boy. :) -

Agreed, that's why my CQB radial didn't have them, here's the original post, http://forums.bistudio.com/showthread.php?139228-Controls-Scheme-amp-User-Interface-Feedback&p=2227234&viewfull=1#post2227234 Full res: http://i45.tinypic.com/119p9id.jpg Keep in mind this is CQB, the radial itself should be in the centre below the crosshair. List of functions and explanations is below, note that "Move to" won't have a context of "Get in" vehicles due to inability to order AI to move directly to a vehicle without boarding it, as shown on the example image: 1) Move to -> [context: Enemy -> "ATTACK ENEMY"; Friendly (wounded) -> "HEAL FRIENDLY"]; 2) Fall back into formation; 3) Stop; 4) Suppressive fire; 5) Get in -> [context: Mines -> "DISARM; Doors/ladders -> "USE"; In a vehicle -> "DISEMBARK"]; Debated: 6) Disengage; 7) Take cover; 8) ?; I might redo the example, properly reposition it in the middle, below the crosshair, update the commands and contexts, which cover pretty much anything. ---------- Post added at 22:48 ---------- Previous post was at 22:41 ---------- Agreed fully, Rainbow Six Raven Shield has multiple-layer radial to command AI - flop. This is actually what we're looking for in a CQB immediate area AI command radial. With hold hotkey to open, ofc. :) I'll review PR BF2 later. You didn't mention Crysis 1, so here it is, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZOkBtVELu7c Add 3 more icons with the same activation method and we have a CQB radial. -

ArmA2 / OA (low) performance issues

Doesn't matter, here's your desktop CPU - http://ark.intel.com/products/53426/Intel-Core-i3-2120-Processor-(3M-Cache-3_30-GHz) Integrated GPU HD 2000 - clearly not enough to run the game. P.S. if that's your desktop, then you can upgrade it with the components that I've suggested via PM - no need to purchase a new motherboard and CPU. -

Aesthetics and intuitiveness. Why not? Draw up some iconography, reduce size by 40%, voila. I'd like a quote on that. That's why nobody plays the game. Makes zero sense to have 10-level radial, when we have everything accomplished with a CQB + ROE ones. Try again. Or draw up 10 separate screens of the radial in action, explaining each function. ---------- Post added at 22:22 ---------- Previous post was at 22:18 ---------- You're piling up redundant complexity into the game in an illusion of grandeur. -

I see no reason why ROE & behavior must be included on the same plane as movement - how often do people change alert states in combat? Not often. Those two radials, CQB & ROE/Formations, already encompass everything there is - tell me what's missing and we'll fix it. -

It's a beautiful solution, DMarkwick, you have to agree. That second radial has 6 out of 8 (9?) formations and we still have 6 partitions to spare. :) The logic behind it, as you've probably noticed, is that the second one won't be used as often as the CQB AI command radial in the centre of the screen, which harbours all of the active commands. :) Think of it as 1) Basic AI Command; 2) Advanced AI Command. -

Are you somewhat blind? Which part of, Do you not comprehend? Which part of MadDogX's CQB immediate area radial has formations and misc command? You continue trolling, you're going on ignore. Edit: Blocked. -

I understand that feeble minds can't envision refined iconography in its place in the same layout, which would probably reduce the size of the whole lot by 30-40%, but here's an idea for you, -

Troll more. His concept covers the first point which is CQB, if you want formations on a radial, this is what you get in additional to MadDogX's rose directly below the crosshair. Clowns all around, nobody to discuss game mechanics with. :( People, where art thou? -

I'm so sad, Carl. :( I get your point perfectly, Carl, and I will be honest - I won't read the rest of your theory. Here's a substitute solution: 1) Implement a CQB AI command radial menu as outlined in the concepts of MadDogX and myself. Single hotkey activation & operation. (Middle Mouse Button?) 2) Implement a second AI command radial menu with 12-24 icons, which will include Formations, Alert States & other misc things. Single hotkey activation via a different one. (T key on the keyboard?) Two keys, two separate radials - fluid operation on demand, hands on WASD everything is available in a comprehensive manner. :) ---------- Post added at 20:12 ---------- Previous post was at 20:03 ---------- Damn, you're really forcing me to fire up paint on the second point to illustrate the menu. Well, if I can find time, I will. -

Resource consumption will continue to increase regardless, as it is a prerequisite of life, what will change, though, is the bloated population number in the future - the nature itself will force it upon Mankind. Of materialism in the context of Eastern philosophy, a certain wise professor of History once wrote, "...is not acceptable to Russia, whose traditions have always been basically dualistic, seeing reality as a contrast between an unattainable ideal of perfection and a horrible, sinful morass of ordinary living—the imperfections of the latter being acceptable as a necessary consequence of the unattainability of the former, with both extremes being uniform and one." -

Good summation, though I think Hong Kong & Shanghai are doing pretty well in terms of "spending" and overall quality of life standard. The rest of China doesn't get a break to enjoy the fruits of whatever had been invested by the West - that is viewed as a safety mechanism by us, seeing as there far too many people there, you simply can't risk empowering such a vast population. -

Still a console port solution for the PC, doesn't provide for a fluid gameplay, since your movement & other vital keys of the WASD area are used as modifiers to navigate the menu. How about we reassign the formations & alert states to the Numpad, since they don't belong on an intuitive radial menu, mkay? :) Keyboard AFAIK. As practical as the current number row AI command string of 0-9. Have you already forgotten that Formations & Alert Modes in the current ArmA II system are located on the far out keys - "8" and "7" respectively? HELL! This part of the AI command drop-down, scroll list menu could be retained even with dedicated weapons keys taking up space on the number row from key 1 to key 8. Keys 9 & 0 could be reserved for "formations" & "alert states". Say what? Num 1 key - FORMATIONS -> a drop list opens up, selection via Num 1, Num 2, Num 3, Num 4, Num 5 - any number you like. When you close the FORMATIONS drop list, you can now open up ALERT MODES with Num 2 -> selection is the same as with FORMATIONS. The above is a copy of the current AI command system - you've played for 10 years with it already, why not gaEm some more? Then you'd be gimping the purpose of the rose to be a fluid & flexible interface to encourage new players to actually *GASP* play the game. Go back a few pages before the trolls came in, and you tell me what our layouts can't do, point by point, except for beloved formations & alert states. Bottom line: our concept involves ONE KEY, one hotkey! On the other hand, you people want to bring redundant complexity into the game again, very similar to that "fluid" F-cycle key. *Chuckle* ---------- Post added at 17:15 ---------- Previous post was at 16:27 ---------- Now there's something we can agree on, with some reservations: the dedicated weapons keys being priority, followed by the re-engineering of the action scroll menu, or even its complete demise. A temporary solution, as originally suggested, is the automatic function toggle of the number row keys: When a unit is selected via the F1-F12 keys, the row executes current AI command; with no units selected - the new weapon & equipment mechanics. I've no doubt, that BIS have a spanking solution for everything in place - that's why they're taking so long with the Alpha. :) -

In both cases you'd have to OC to at least 3.8 GHz. I suggested it to him in the first thread he started, and yet there he is - with a second thread on the same problem. A i5-650 has the same clock-for-clock performance as a Sandy Bridge i3-2100. Both are multimedia processors, not gaming CPUs. -

You need two to tango. :) As for the suggestion of turning Vsync on... if you like dynamic FPS drops from 60 to 30, back to 60, down to 30 to 20, back up to 60... If your system can hold a steady 60 FPS under all circumstances at your desired settings, be my guest and use Vsync, otherwise - see above. :)
