smallarms NIArms Release Thread
irving_mainway replied to toadie2k's topic in ARMA 3 - ADDONS & MODS: COMPLETE
Thanks war_lord, unfortunately it would seem the cat's out of the bag on this one. I'm much less concerned about the whole forum / internet knowing, rather the one guy in particular that this was meant to surprise. Luckily the secret may be safe for now as I don't believe that he has an account here, much less frequently checks the NIArms thread (although he'd probably be quite keen on this topic if he were more handy with his PC). Said individual used one of these as a service weapon and marvels at most everything Sniper-related in Arma 3. While very unassuming, understated and often times soft spoken, my friend in question is the kind of guy who will literally impart a mountain's worth of knowledge to anyone who has the discipline and, for lack of a better term, appreciation, to sit down and listen. He doesn't seek to be personally appreciated as a teacher or mentor for his experience, rather that you appreciate the lesson for what it is, which could probably be summed up as "There's a lot more to being a sniper than running around looking like a bush and shooting people from far away." Aside from putting a smile on the face of a good dude, I'd like to hope that this weapon also helps to carry that message forward. Anyways I look forward to the day that Toadie's done working his magic on this one, at the very least it will give us all a new toy to play with! -

Hey, you may want to re-download because the MG3 works fine for me (both the regular version and the KWK one). Then again I may have used a different download link that you. I'd say try to get it again and see if you still have the same problem. -

We'll see if I have better luck posting the link. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Np6N_JKJaEA In the video he has two malfunctions, first is because he lets the belt is hang it can't feed properly, then after holding the belt he makes the observation that the gun is jamming because it doesn't have enough resistance on it, same idea as limp-wristing a pistol, basically because too much of the energy goes into physically pushing the poorly held weapon back, rather than driving the recoil spring, the spring doesn't get compressed enough to rebound with enough force to chamber the next round, leading to the stoppage. I'll be the frist to admit that I have no practical experience in this matter, however just looking at his stance, he's kind of shooting "rambo" style with the stock sandwiched between his arm and his side, the recoil can just push the butt back into the air behind him. I'm thinking if he got into a lower stance like this one where the butt will push back directly into his hip, he'd be able to get reliable function, considering he shoots fine from the shoulder. I know in the illustration that's an M249, with a sling, and the stance looks really awkward and kind of dumb, but if it means the difference between my weapon working or not, I'm ready to look dumb all day. I think the moral of the story here is, it doesn't matter if your Sly, Arnold or Jesse "The Body" Ventura, shooting a machine gun from the hip is a desperation move that should only be done in an emergency. -

Yeah, I fully realize that both the M80 (late 50s design) and M855/SS109 (Belgian designed in the mid-late 70s) have been fully and completely outperformed and surpassed by the new EPR projectiles. My interest in the old rounds is based on realism (and history), specifically BECAUSE they are worse than the new EPR rounds, and much more commonly encountered and available (AFAIK the United States has not and most likely will not approve the M855A1 for export sale). I've yet to hear of anyone who likes the infamous green-tip round, but that doesn't change the fact that it's by far the most common round for the 5.56x45mm since the 80s and still equips almost all armies which use 5.56 weapons and for most there is no choice or alternative. Ditto to the M80 which almost everyone running 7.62x51mm NATO has an equivalent 147-150 grain FMJ round. Anyways I'm content to just use the universal BIS "30 round STANAG" ect as an approximate representation, was just wondering what were going to be seeing with the new update, but you've answered my question. Thanks -

Hey Spartan, not to go too far off topic but, for your updated ballistics, are you planning on also featuring vintage M855/SS109 and M80 FMJ rounds, or have you come to the conclusion that the BI projectiles are close enough to the performance of those rounds that it doesn't matter / warrant creating? The reason I'm asking is that while both of these rounds are on their way to being phased out (I think the Marines are still running 855s in some areas until the decide on whether to adopt 855A1 or Mk 318 which is what they've been pushing for) by the US Armed Forces, other than the UK (who plans to be using new L31A1 5.56x45mm and L59A1 7.62x51mm "Enhanced Performance" rounds of their own standard) almost all other users worldwide have something equivalent to those (M855/SS109 and M80) standards. -

Not sure of the mechanics behind it but you can always look at the patient's triage card which should record what was given / done to him, when and by whom. The spare barrel is considered a magazine now and you can find it in the "magazines" section of the arsenal that BI just added in patch 1.64 -

Don't mean to hijack this thread or take away from the great work being done by SMA, but if you like the Elcan, take a look at the Iansky Scope Mod, his Elcan is one of my favorite scopes available for this game and I'll be happy to see anything approaching that in quality. -

This is great news, always loved the capability the Carl G gives you. I was wondering if the M72 LAW is still in your plans? Also, picking up on something we spoke of a while earlier (ADM rounds for the Carl G) I've seen something that pretty much approximates the function of an ADM flachette round in a weapons modpack available on the Steam workshop from a guy called Kickass. He's made flachette rounds for the 40mm grenade launcher and shotguns which in truth do seem a little bit OP for a 40mm round, but would probably be right at home for what an ADM round would do. No idea at all how he was able to get it to work though I just thought this might help. -

ACE 3 Extension Mod (Anim & Actions) + (Placeables)
irving_mainway replied to KokaKolaA3's topic in ARMA 3 - ADDONS & MODS: COMPLETE
Not going to say this is a better idea, but would it be possible for you to add a "static poses" category/menu (so for instance, Actions, Animations, poses, static poses) just to differentiate it from your animated poses while at the same time make both available without having to run two mods? Reason I ask is because at least the way my community does things we'd usually just take photos at the beginning or end of an actual mission vs doing a separate "photo-op" just to take pictures. This will be much appreciated because it will make for better photos, vs everyone just standing around.- 142 replies

We run with revive turned off and I've seen CPR bring back someone with 0 pulse. Doesn't always work though and obviously isn't going to overcome other injuries (or the fact that this person may be out of blood). -

With all the G36 pictures flying around, I can't believe nobody's posted the ULTIMATE version yet. Aside from also functioning as a mobile hotspot (see the antenna), this thing's got VR (see the eyepiece?), the scope lets you watch movies in 4k, the grenade launcher tube also mixes drinks, and if you're really in a pinch you can probably use it to help form Voltron. The future is HERE, except its not very handy......... -

I agree with you, I think the 556 is a nice gun and I'd look forward to seeing it in A3 at some point, however there's a whole lot of ground to cover even if you are just talking about calibers and barrel lengths there's nearly as many versions of the 556 as there is with the whole rest of the 55x family. -

The ironic thing is that according to all the info that's come out in the last few days, the 7.62x39mm variant of the AK-12 will be called the AK-15 The more I look at this, the more I think that maybe CK (Kalashnikov Concern) just wants to sell guns and these are some of their concept work. Whether the "AK 400" design is the way the Russian Army is going or not seems to be immaterial to all the stuff that they've just showed off. What I think is the most important thing to keep in mind for all of the above links, there is probably a good to decent chance that absolutely none of it (at least as it is presented here) sees any type of service in the Russian military, let alone goes into production. While I don't doubt all of this stuff works / could be made to work, it strikes me as an attempt by the Kalashnikov Concern to say Look and us, we're hip, we're cool, we can do this modern cutting edge Call Of Duty stuff too. We're not your grandfather's design bureau that says "Nyet, rifle is fine." and makes the very same old guns we have for 60+ years.- 16574 replies

The buffer spring just works that good. Very possible. My understanding is that stuff like this is exactly why Toadie puts his stuff out through his twitter first, is to find bugs / errors so they can be rectified before mass release to steam / armaholic / PW6. I have no idea weather this is intentional or not though. Yeah he has a whole list of stuff with precedence decided by votes from his patreons. Here's the current work list. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1Ntyv14BqYyhabzDfBgnmEfnKlIk3exvM8WDOlU5Qv_g/edit#gid=0 -

Two things I'd like to mention on the SAW IF there's any time for consideration on additions. 1) The old style wire / tubular stocks that Minimis/M249s were first shipped with in the 80s. I'm not sure if it would be easy / possible to transplant it but the DS Arms OSW in the FAL pack uses the exact stock I'm talking about. I'm pretty sure this was mostly replaced by the solid stocks and then successively by the M4 type collapsible (also if I'm not mistaken around that time they added a small hydraulic buffer as part of that PIP). 2) Adjustable gas valve on earlier models. This would let you vary the rate of fire, much like the APEX LIM-85 / M249 SPW (although I'm pretty sure the rate of fire is a little too low on slow mode for the BI gun). I'm pretty sure all US weapons were fitted with a non-adjustable gas plug and that seems to be what many countries are going towards (possibly because of added reliability) but AFAIK at least the British and Canadians have had them fitted this way. A green C9A2 would be amazing aswell but if we're going to sit here and talk about every possible variation of every weapon that's been in NiArms, its only a matter of time until someone asks for an AKM straight out of Pakistan which uses what appears to be a brass door-knob as a pistol grip, so I may as well get that out of the way too. If that's not classy I don't know what is! Seriously though, the amount of work that goes into this project cannot be underestimated, and the fact that Toadie has to continually re-visit his already completed work, while also trying to work on new stuff shouldn't be forgotten either. Whether these or any other modifications are possible / practicable or not, I'll still be looking forward to whatever is in the pipeline. -
Thanks man, much appreciated!

Looks great man, just curious though why did you remove the ID cards? I always enjoyed those but I you probably had your reasons.

RHS Escalation (AFRF and USAF)
irving_mainway replied to soul_assassin's topic in ARMA 3 - ADDONS & MODS: COMPLETE
Firstly, I'd like to thank you for your service. AFAIK its being done because the USMC announced that (if they are still on schedule this is supposed to be completed by next month according to what was announced in October of last year) they are switching to the M4 as their primary infantry weapon but the change will also include security forces and some supporting roles as well. From what I can tell the M16A4 won't be entirely phased out but will be displaced by the M4 in most combat roles. If I had to guess, I would say that you were either gone before the decision had been made, or that your unit wasn't one of the first affected. What's more interesting though is that prior to this there was work on the books about a feasibility study on what would amount to an "M16A5" or M16A4 Block II upgrade program where existing rifle would likely be converted to us a full-auto trigger group (as the Army has done while converting their carbines to M4A1 standard), receive an adjustable M4-type butt-stock (a lot like the Canadian C7A2 upgrade program) possibly a free floating barrel and lose their triangular front sight in favor of a railed gas-block with flip-up sight. As far as I know this was all just concept work and the plan never really went anywhere but its still a possibility that they may use some of freed-up M16A4s in inentory for some type of specialty marksman role (like a more affordable SAM-R or Mk 12). One thing that always struck me as kind of curious about the USMCs decision to do this is, again AFAIK, the M4s they are going to be using are pretty much your standard government issue ones of 15 years ago. They will have the RIS but are still using the 3 round burst trigger that the Army has gotten rid of due to accuracy issues / inconsistent trigger pull and are still using the standard thickness barrels unlike the thicker, heavy barrel the Army went with for their newly upgraded M4A1s. My thinking on this is (and I have no way of knowing this is true, just a guess) is that since the Marine Corps is notoriously underfunded, its probably a budget issue. When announcing the switch to the M4, they made a big point in saying that these carbines were already in inventory, they did not have to buy any new weapons to make the switch happen. I think after a time they will launch their own M4 upgrade program by saying "yep, we used it, here's what we didn't like and want to change." Also by doing things this way they won't be shoehorned into just adopting whatever upgrades the Army has decided on. This is just a gut feeling but you may see the USMC go for free-floating barrels for their M4s in the future.- 16574 replies

TRYK Multiplay-Uniforms Fix
irving_mainway replied to JFisher's topic in ARMA 3 - ADDONS & MODS: COMPLETE
Sparfell has already made something similar but its good to see someone step up and help keep a mod like TRYK viable for the whole ARMA 3 community. AFAIK like zagor64bz has mentioned, due to hardware failure, the source files for the TRYK mod were lost over a year ago, so basically the author would have to remake the whole thing if he plans on continuing. For the time being though it is very much a core mod for my unit, along with Zabb's TAC vests. -

I've never really used TPW, I'll have to check that out. I don't mind what ACE has done so much, but its pretty predictable, if you fatally shoot someone you see them rag doll, if not you just see them directly flop on the ground and then go through a quick "roll over" animation when they get back up, which is usually within a few seconds. I'm not going to claim to have any real knowledge on the subject, but you would think that most people (especially trained solders), after just having been hit by a bullet, would go through some kind of an "assessment" phase of a few seconds where they try and figure out if they've been seriously wounded / are in shock or not. Whatever their reaction, it should be a bit more substantial than a split-second flinch which is just as often followed by a return shot within a second. That's nothing new with Arma though. On the topic of armor and vests, I'm not at all sure how they did it or even how successful it was because I stopped playing the mod by then, but I remember DayZ Origins mod for Arma 2 featuring what looked like a pretty nice armor system where you had different plate carriers coupled plates of varying capability which would wear out as they took damage. There's probably a whole laundry list of reasons for why this isn't viable / hasn't been done for this game, but its an interesting idea nonetheless.- 16574 replies

irving_mainway replied to soul_assassin's topic in ARMA 3 - ADDONS & MODS: COMPLETE
That's an old standard issue SAPI plate (probably from the 80s-early 90s) vs. a 7.62x54R API (Armor-Piercing Incindiary) round at 30 yards. Safe to say that if the plate can defeat API, the typical FMJ rounds that are much more common for that caliber aren't going to stand a chance. That said, I sure wouldn't want to be the guy wearing that vest (I like my ribs right where they are, not broken) but it did get the job done. How well it would weather another round is another question all together. I think its quite certain that another round in the same area would penetrate. There's also a good chance that with the amount of punishment its received, the rest of the ceramic is probably cracked and even with a hit high on the plate, its effectiveness would be degraded. I do sympathize with you though, that guy you had to shoot three times to kill, he probably just flinched when he was hit by the first two bullets and was ready to kill you by the time the third found him. I really wish ARMA had some kind of "stumble and fall" type thing that COULD happen when you took damage, but I doubt that's something we'll ever see. In this case I feel like the RHS armor values seem to be just fine here, although depending on where the shots landed, I wouldn't be surprised to see an ESAPI plate survive more than three hits with 7.62x54R. As for the Mosin-Nagant being useless, its only as useless as the person using it. If you try to use it as a sniper rifle, or think you can run up on a group and drop five of them with one shot kills because its 7.62x54R, guess again. On the other hand, if you try to use it like the Afghans have used the Lee-Enfield for the past 30 or so years, taking shots at the enemy while you are either outside or just barely inside their effective range in hopes of slowing or even stopping their progress, then it might just be the gun for you.- 16574 replies

Community Upgrade Project - CUP
irving_mainway replied to CUP's topic in ARMA 3 - ADDONS & MODS: COMPLETE
Hey, as the CUP M249 and M240 now support the Barrel Swap functionality from ACE 3, shouldn't the M60, PKM and UK 59 have this feature as well? I figured I'd ask on here before creating a ticket on the issue tracker.
