Why birds could easily be done in ofp

Recommended Posts

Although OFP is a great game, I play something else too: Anarchy Online. Anyone playing AO must have noticed the birds! Just look how they sudddenly flee when you get close, exactly how it should be in OFP. And it doesn´t seem to be bad for the framerate either. They fly in random patterns and look more real than anything similar I have seen in any game. And that is just a minor detail in AO.

So I believe birds to give away enemies positions in OFP would be very doable. Anyone against me, please put your hand in the air wink.gif

Thank you

And what if the birds turn into homicidal killers? I dont want Everon to turn into a Hitchkockian nightmare island, full of alternate possibilities, surprise endings, and lots and lots of very angry birds.

ewww AO worst $100 i ever spent

err anyway back on topic

i don't really see why they are needed unless you are going to add more wildlife after that.

although they would be fun to fly into biggrin.gif

*M1A1 platoon rolls along and stops*

"all, target bird"

it would be nice target practice and we're going to get flamed for this topic...

Or worse...

*M1A1 platoon rolls along and stops*

Bird...5 oclock...200 meters

ad nauseum, and the radio spam makes firing impossible...

So the enemy RPG soldiers eat your M1 Tank Platoon alive...

Actually I think birds would be really fun. They are low-poly models so they wouldn't have much of an impact on your framerate.

As for wildlife. Well... These islands are pretty small, so unless they were connected with the mainland some millions of years ago when the animals could have ventured off, then I don't think they would otherwise have developed there unless they were manually brought in by people.

Birds usually stay up in the trees and such. The only time they get down on the ground is when they spot some food.

Though I can imagine a Sniper going off, and being able to spot him instantly when I see a flock of birds go nuts.

It would add more life though. In the campaign missions they manually add sounds of birds and such. But by default there are very few ambient sounds. Sure at night you hear crickets and such, but these islands are no doubt filled with lots of nature. Even some ambient sounds of wind blowing through trees would be nice.

As I have said before, I really dislike Ghost Recon, but as far as ambient sounds go, it's awesome. You occasionally hear a "crack" as you walk through the woods and snap a little branch. You hear the shummy sound the trees make in the wake of wind. It really adds a lot to the experience.

Allready been done

There is a sea gul script by Petroizki.

I have the script but I can not remember where I got it from

However if you E-Mail: petroizki@suomi24.fi I am sure he will send it or tell you where you can down load it.

What would be nice is to make other birds

Pheasant shoot any one

Tofs, Beaters, gun dogs, Hunt Sabatuers!

Yeh!

Ambient life would rock. Imagine sneaking through a forrest, hearing some footsteps. You get down in a bush and prepare your sniper rifle. Your heart rate increases. You listen. Put on NV's and scan the horizon ... nothing. Then you turn around and stand face to face with a drooling moose. biggrin.gif

Why does everyone want to shoot the birds ? Is it just me or do people want to be able to blow up or destroy every single unit in the game ?

Yes birds would add more data to be exchanged in multiplayer games, but if there was an option to disable them, well that would solve the problem.

Me and the friends I play with all live in the same city, and all have broadband connection. Our ping is always below 40, so I fail to see how a couple of birds would slow our game.

It would also be a lot of fun in singleplayer.

Here is a link to that script I mentioned

I think there are several versions go through the thread to find the latest

Petroizki Seagul script thread at OFPEC

I dont want to shoot the birds. I want to be a Hunt Sab and torture the toffs to death by scaring their birds off and getting their beaters drunk and giving their dogs big marrow bones to chew.

See I am all fluffy realy (sharpens axe with mad lear in eye)

I too wonder why some people just have to be able to shoot everything that moves. The whole idea of using birds is to give away someone´s position, why is that so difficult to understand. I have no clue about the code in OFP, but it should not be a problem making no-one but soldiers and officers noticing the birds. And they should not be able to kill them.

AO is not wasted money btw, I love it. If you was a one-man war mahine being all alone, I can understand it, but I belong to a great guild and we help and support eachother during missions and hang out when we´re not fighting smile.gif Pretty cool.

And I noticed how the birds seem to not do an impact on the framerate at all. Like already mentioned, they are low polygons, but they look real and they move nicely and real too. They would make a perfect add-on.

If you are afraid of low framerate, no-one says you have to use it. Of course there would have to be an option in MP to turn it off for everybody. As you know (?), BIS will come up with improved net code in a few months, and I see no reason why this idea would not be doable by then.

Will try the seagull addon, but I doubt they move anything like the birds in AO. Thanks anyway for the link, will have a look at it.

BTW - there are tiny bugs in AO too, crawling everywhere, following walls or just moving in random patterns e.t.c. All those details smile.gif
