Strange monitor noise.

Recommended Posts

I'm assuming this is the right place to make this thread, reason being, I want to shoot this trouble in the head.

When I am in ArmA II I get a strange noise coming from my monitor (my speakers are built into the monitor) which is like a kind of hissing noise, especially when zooming in and out on the editor or map screens. I get it a bit in the main menu and only slightly in the actual game. It may not seem like a big problem but it's annoying because I like to have my sound on pretty loud and this just makes the strange hissing sound even louder, any idea what it could be, I'm assuming its something to do with the hertz because the screen kind of throbs if you understand what I mean, will try to make a video so you understand, thanks.

*Edit*

I made a video but for some reason the throbbing effect doesn't show in it, neither does the hissing noise, strange.

Some had a gun to my head forcing me to edit it or he would shoot me.

Some monitors display that behaviour after sudden color changes of bigger parts of the screen because certain electrical patterns (consumption mainly based on brightness) would cause some coils to vibrate. Or, the changing electrical fields have an effect on some insufficient shielding of the internal audio wires. My 2 cents.

If the sound is coming from the built-in speakers then it's more than likely something interfering with your audio/sound card. Try plugging in a pair of headphones or different set of speakers into the audio jack and see if it still hisses.

It doesn't do it when I use earphones, which also have much better quality than the bog standard monitor speakers, but with me being on TS3 and such it's annoying trying to wear a headset and earphones, thanks for the help anyway. Oh yeah, I only have my gamma setting 1/4 of the way up, could that be the problem do you think?

na chances are it's something with the built-in speakers and not the monitor. Best bet would be to go out and buy some external speakers and just leave the monitor ones disabled

Yep, sounds like inteference. It could be the monitor or the monitor's power supply causing the it (make sure if your monitor has a power supply that it's a good distance from the speakers) of course it could be crosstalk if your monitors speaker cables (or HDMI cable) are coming into proximity with other cables without sufficient shielding, or if the cables are damaged themselves.

That said, if the sound is coming from your monitor and not the speakers then it could be a case of the speakers intefering with the monitor (speaker magnets don't like monitors, especially when electrically charged), but that would be bad design on behalf of the monitor manufacturers.

I get that too.I also have a monitor with integrated speakers.

When the volume is high I hear that noise,it changes tune also according to the mouse movement nearby :) .

It`s almost certainly some kind of electrical interference.

Monitor speakers are supposed to be "magnetically shielded" to avoid this, however with the volume way up you can still hear that "electric noise".

OK, I was playing Halo Combat Evolved earlier on and it did the exact same thing. I went into the video settings screen and tweaked around. Turning off Vertical Sync fixed it, is there a way to do it with ArmA II, it may fix it with that.

Go into ATI CCC or nVidia Control Center (depending on your graphics card) and look for the V-Sync option and set it to "Force off" or "Always off"
