Arma 2 & Eyefinity - what is the deal?

Recommended Posts

Hey fella's,

I'm in the process of buying a new PC, and I am interested in running eyefinity............... provided it just works .

I have read about Arma 2 having problems with resolutions bigger than 4096x4096.

I have read about Arma 2 needing config adjustments in game to run eyefinity setups.

None of which is any good, if it requires 5% of extra effort I simply won't play it (just like 90% of the rest of humanity), which would make eyefinity an expensive waste.

However, i have read these things elsewhere, so i want to know what you guys have to say.................

Can i buy a brace of 5870 cards, hook them up to three 1680x1050 screens, start up Arma 2, select 5040x1050, and forever after have hassle free eyefinity fun in Arma 2?

cheers

Yes it works fine. I'm using Eyefinity with a single 5870. I have it hooked up to three 1920x1200 screens, for a total widescreen resolution of 5720x1200.

AA: Disabled

Post Processing: Disabled

View Distance: 2500

Everything else: Normal

Runs pretty well like that. AA kills the FPS the most obviously, followed by shadows and terrain details. I can put up a detailed video of it on YouTube if people really want me to. Here is one that I made for FSX:

cheers for the reply.

by "fine" i take it to mean that silly in-game config adjustments are not needed, and it really does just work ? :)

If you are too lazy to edit a few fields in the config (a textfile) to make this work, I doubt Arma 2 is the game for you...

Actually setting up a mod is more work then changing the aspect ratio :j:

For info I went the cheap route and got a Matrox triplehead (analog) box off the bay, plus a couple of 19" CRTs which were practically given away (I actually got 3 but the bezels are too thick). Though the aspect ratio is slightly stretched on my central 22" LCD due to the triple 1280x1024 view, the overall effect of having additional peripheral vision is great and I would recommend triple screens when possible, preferably using Eyefinity or some other method such as Matrox Digital or Kegetys SoftTh.

I have been playing these games since the original Flashpoint demo got released, but thanks for the advice.

I don't mind editing a config once, but juggling configs every time you start the game is unacceptable, for the same reason i haven't played Arma in five months because of a show-stopper in the badlands mission, it sucks the fun out of my leisure time.

In the hope the the 1.6 patch fixes my badlands problem, i am also curious to find out how well eyefinity works in Arma 2.

Now, is this a one-time thing or an everytime juggling act?

Regards

There is no config editing to do at all! Just set the aspect ratio to Triple-Screen, and you are good to go, even if each screen is a widescreen. In most games, you have to set the ratio to 16:9 for it to work properly, but games like DCS Blackshark and ArmA2 have their own triple screen support which works pretty nicely.

I'll be honest though, I do switch back and forth a lot between three screens and one screen. The reason is because I can turn the graphics almost all the way up on one screen and sometimes I miss how pretty everything looks when playing across 3 displays. But things do feel so much more immersive with 3 displays. Especially when flying.

I'll see if I can find some time today to make a video for you guys.
