Is it possible to reassign purchased air units (e.g. Mi24) to other teams? I did it with the command mode, and the helicopter disappears from my unit list. However, it just sits there in the field and never goes anywhere.

You mean you assigned the helicopter pilot and crew to another team or?

If so then yes the helicopter will sit there until you tell it to do something. Moving units to other teams is just an organization feature, it doesn't actually physically move anything.

Yes, I sent the helicopter and crew to another team. As I am not the commander, and the units have disappeared from my unit list then how should I control it? With other unit types, the AI takes over and they start operating on their own.

Hmmm, do you mean control the helicopter or the units? Sorry if I'm being a bit slow here. What happens when you send the units to another team when you're not the commander I'm not sure of, but you lose control of them for sure.

Try to use the "disband" function instead when you've selected the units(it's on the same tab as sending units iirc) that usually kills them and allows you to take control of the helicopter yourself, if that's what you want to do.

Also, the helicopter isn't actually in your list of units. What looks like a helicopter icon is actually the pilot and/or gunner/crewmen. As long as you disband and not send the units you can take control of the actual chopper yourself.

There is also an option of buying an empty chopper somewhere on the buy page. I think it's called "add empty" or something. Costs less and is great if you're gonna fly it yourself anyway.

Hope this makes sense, I find it hard to explain these things in a simple manner. :)

I don't think he wants the helicopter for himself. He wants to give the helicopter to one of the other teams.

well, if you want to give it to another team. Just order it to take off (assign a location on map), then transfer both pilot and gunner to another commander.

When I have spare credits, I would always transfer a few BMPs to other commanders...

Jakerod is correct, I want to give the helicopter to one of the other teams. It seems that if I do it while the helicopter is on the ground, it transfers but then the other team doesn't use the helicopter. I will try having it take off first and then transfer.

This may not work, but it works in "War Welcome" scenario.

Transfer the unit to other group, make sure YOU are the COMMANDER, go to high command mode, select the group that you gave chopper to, then tell the group to go somewhere. Usually then the chopper decides to rejoin its team.

you (or the ai commander) needs to build an airfactory/helipad first before you can buy Helos. And you are now allowed to build them until further into D.O.W mission.

When you have an airfactory/helipad you buy the helos in the same buy units menu as you buy your tanks and soldiers.
