Amerikaner 10 Posted January 29, 2010 (edited) I hear with 1.05 that DRM is removed. What exactly does this mean? If I get a boxed copy and install with the CD's which will install SecuROM and then patch the game to 1.05, will SecuROM be completely removed or will I still have registry entries that cause problems and the like? Thanks for any guidance on this matter. I'd really like to get ARMA2 going on my computer asap as long as I know the DRM won't mess up my experience. (I know Steam doesn't have SecuROM but I can purchase a boxed version for cheaper) Edited January 29, 2010 by Amerikaner
That guy 10 Posted January 29, 2010 with 1.05 you can play the game with out the disk in the drive
Amerikaner 10 Posted January 29, 2010 That's it? So SecuROM stays? And what about activations?
W0lle 1050 Posted January 29, 2010 SecuROM stays as it is installed with the game. Only the check for the disc is remvoed. With the boxed version you don't have to deal with activations.
Xandros 10 Posted January 29, 2010 (edited) Is SecuROM truly still existent after patch 1.05 though or is it just the remains of what was there before being patched? I mean for instance if you clean SecuROM off your system using the various guides available online then run Arma 2 (patched to 1.05 obviously), will SecuROM registry entries and the likes reappear (indicating it is still used in the game)? I only ask because removing the disc check can be acomplished either by removing SecuROM completely or, by using those encryption key things that are stored in a hidden folder in Documents and Settings (and like the registry entries cannot be deleted because of a dodgy filename). Amerikaner 10 Posted January 29, 2010 Damnit well that sucks. The "DRM free for users of legitimate installs" is a bit misleading then. Thanks for the info.
W0lle 1050 Posted January 29, 2010 Well don't nail me down on this, it could be possible that the DRM crap is completely removed while patching. For sure only one of the devs can tell though.
Xandros 10 Posted January 29, 2010 Finger crossed it is gone. I really do despise SecuROM.
MulleDK19 21 Posted January 29, 2010 SecuROM has been completely strapped from ARMA 2 in patch v1.05 No trace whatsoever. Other than the shit SecuROM leaves around your system. A SecuROM removal should get rid of it.

If this is true, awesome news indeed.

If this is true, awesome news indeed. When I reformat (which is often, I fuck stuff up a lot), I just install Arma 2 without patching, since I run it from another drive. It's already there patched up and ready to go. That being said I just used the securom removal tool and it showed no signs of securom on my pc (reformatted this morning, only arma 2 installed right now). Was it not installed (securom) with the US DVD in the first place? I don't remember if my German copy did or not, haven't installed that one in awhile. Just curious, I really don't care either way, securom never really bothered me before anyways... Edited January 30, 2010 by Mosh senile

SecuROM will be existent on the DVD, however I'm fairly sure that it only "installs itself", i.e. creates those registry entries and any other crap, when the protected game exe is actually run. Not when the game is installed. Or at least that's how it used to work. As such if you've already got the game installed and patched to 1.05 before running it technically when you do run it on a clean system if the patch truly does remove the DRM then SecuROM won't be there to add those registry keys and the likes. Pulverizer 1 Posted January 30, 2010 Finger crossed it is gone. I really do despise SecuROM. LOL. You "despise" SecuROM, yet can't even tell whether it's there or not :D
Xandros 10 Posted January 30, 2010 I haven't got the game, yet. I despise SecuROM that much, I simply won't buy games that use it. With what I have written here I'm only going on past experience of SecuROM, however I haven't had a game installed that uses it since 2006.
Pulverizer 1 Posted January 31, 2010 I see. In that case I applaud you for standing by your principles. Good for you I suppose but personally I've never had any problems with SecuROM. I think you could install to a virtual OS, then copy the registry entries and game files to get an install without SecuROM to your actual OS. That is, in case SecuROM isn't required at all to start the game. I think it is though, because you still get those 10 boxes on a gray background before the game launches. Xandros 10 Posted January 31, 2010 Well, whatever. I had the game on order so would have been able to find out or not if it truly does have SecuROM or not... Of course that was before I played the demo just now and realised it still has a lot of annoyances I disliked about the first ArmA, so like the first one I'm going to give it a miss. Amerikaner 10 Posted February 3, 2010 if anybody has tried seeing if securom installs during installation or during the first running of the exe please let me know the results. thanks guys.
