Shooting tanks with AT from REALLY close??

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, I was wathcing a video of BFBC2 here http://www.gametrailers.com/video/exclusive-battlefield-battlefield-bad/60316#new_comment and at 0:30 I felt that the tank was a bit too close to be shot at with an RPG. So, I booted ArmA2 and to my surprise i could shoot tanks with AT from just a few meters. How realistic is that?

Dont know how RPGs handle, but my field manual gives me the minimum safe range for the "Panzerfaust 3" at 11 meters...thats with the rod extended for use against fortified positions.

In game the SMAW or RPG7 round with HEDP warhead will kill you most of the time at this firing distance.

Some explosive weapons will have a minimum range before they arm, for example, the grenades fired by the M203 will only arm after travelling about 30m. I'm sure some of the more modern AT rockets around have a similar feature.

Yeah I had a feeling it not good, thanks.

But then I wonder, how can I not die in ArmA2 then? Maybe mine is bugged?

Might not be bugged ziiip, many of the warheads in ArmA2 have a very low splash radius unless specifically designated as an area effect warhead.

Somehow it is, because hollow charge warheads tend to work in a very narrow area and direction by concentrate the explosive energy into a armour piercing metal jet. Thats why pure hollow charge grenades do not work well against area targets (large troop concentrations).

...I can't imagine the user would feel very comfortable during and after the event, however. He/she sure as hell wouldn't be happy.

Cameron posted in the wrong thread and the 'event' undoubtedly refers to playing the OFPDR campaign.

/sorry, couldn´t resist...

Heheh, not quite. I was referring to the fact that a soldier hitting a tank with an AT weapon from say, 11 metres, would probably not be too comfortable during the event, even if he/she survives.

You'd be deafened, with a whole lot of hot gas and debris in your face.

Set of fins and pieces from projectile's butt thru lungs and other organs usually has such good effect in person's living quality.

LOL back in days when we were instructed to use of claymores in engineer training (sapper training might be more suiting word) we discussed that it would be neat to try that as bullet protection tied into combat vest and extra firepower, great CQB-self protection system also. Having swarm of enemy charging at you while your weapon jams? Don't worry just stand up and blow up the claymore which is always tied into combat-vest to chest height. Then we blew up first one and didnt' discuss anymore about it :D Talking about military stupidity.
