mmm...probably u r right Mister Frag. All i know is that after that bank robbery, LAPD did get more assualt rifles, and they were more available. I'm not sure about the certification thing, but if my memory serves correctly, they do have some available in vehicles.

but then again, those vehicles might not be patrol units, so you are correct.

true....i said about warning shot because i see alot of ppl thinking that US LEO are trigger-happy. maybe i'm trigger-hapy.... wink.gif

AFAFIK, LEO in US don't fire unless it's absoluetly necessary. and i have respect for such decision.

For those who don't know this, during the North Hollywood Bank Shootout, the LAPD had to borrow rifles from a local gunshop to finally bring this frightening event to an end.

They borrowed four semi-automatic AR-15 rifles from B&B Sales on Oxnard Street in Burbank, which promptly got into trouble with the BATF for not following procedures and not doing the required paperwork before transferring the firearms. B&B Sales went out of business about a month ago, although this was unrelated to the trouble they got into with the BATF.

That's the problem I think...too many varients with the same name...

I also found this page after a bit of searching...

During the Bank of America shootout, I heard that police were raiding gunshops for .30-06 rifles, which makes sense becasue the 2 robbers were wearing body armour.

One guy died when his pistol malfunctioned and went of in his face. The other guy was shot by SWAT team members after he emptied his AKM behind a car.

I'm sure most people here have seen the footage, right?

really? the robber with handgun, AFAIK, killed himself. even after the incident, LAPD had to be scrutinized for shooting that suspect or not. AFAIK, that suspect shot himself.

and the second one was scarier. 4 officers with AR-15(?) got into firefight within 2 car's length. one officer layed down(went prone i guess) and shot the suspect in the feet, knocking him down on to the hood of the car he was sitting behind, and then hail of bullets diabled him.

he was alive though. but later died due to his injuries. and LAPD got sued for that! leaving him alone! LAPD lost the court battle, not because they failed to prove themselves, but they failed to submit response in timely manner.(but what happened after, i have no idea)

p.s. this is my 800th post! one more star!

The only guns that were borrowed were the AR-15s and two shotguns. I have conflicting reports on the number of rifles borrowed, it was either four or six.

Larry Eugene Phillips Jr.'s handgun did not malfunction, he took his own life by placing the muzzle under his chin and shooting upwards into his head.

Emil Matasareanu was not shot at by the SWAT team after he emptied his rifle at them, he was apprehended at great risk to the officers without another shot being fired at him; they exhibited incredible restraint.

Thanks for clearing that up. I remember hearing on TV that Larry Eugene Phillips' gun malfunctioned and that he didn't shoot himself, oh well.

The suit was brought by Emil Matasareanu's estate on behalf of his two children, alleging that his civil rights were violated by not providing medical treatment in a timely manner.

The suit did go to a jury, but a mistrial was declared. It was not retried AFAIK.

A separate suit by the suspect's mother was avoided in a plea bargain with the prosecutor's office when it was discovered that Valerie Matasareanu had been commiting fraud by collecting the welfare benefit checks for a mentally retarded and physically neglected woman she was supposed to care for.

It was his H&K HK-91 rifle that malfunctioned, the receiver was damaged by an unknown officer's bullet.

Matasareanu had left in the getaway car, leaving Philips with only his handgun. When he started to run out of ammunition, he killed himself.
