Explanation of all the controls?

Recommended Posts

Is there a list and explanation somewhere of all the controls and what they do?

For instance, what is the difference between "prone" and "go prone"? They both seem to do the same thing. Also, Q and S are mapped to lean left/right, but also "evasive left" and "evasive right". What does that mean?

A better explanation in the manual of all the controls would have been nice.

Just assign the controls to keys, and try them. :D

Evasive L/R, means rolling sideways while you're prone.

Also don't forget that keys can have 2 functions: tab, and double-tab...for example, tab-Q (default) once, and you'll lean as long as you hold the key. Double-tab Q, and you'll stay in lean untill you cancel out.

Sure I can, I just wondered if there was any way to avoid all the experimentation just to understand such a basic thing as the controls, which should really have been explained in the manual.

But thanks for the info on those controls!!

I am not aware of there being any documentation on the control settings. Trying them out really is the only way. Some of the controls are indeed named very confusingly, "prone" and "go prone" are just one example. In the german version it's even worse. There both options are called "hinlegen" (meaning "go prone"), but one of them is actually "toggle prone".

The controls screen definitely needs an overhaul.

Oh, I missed that when testing out "prone" and "go prone". Both just seemed to make you go prone, but it makes sense that one is actually "toggle prone". Thanks! I will try it out again.

I guess there's nothing to do but jump in and test everything out. Which will take a while, as there is no way to know when the controls are valid, that is, which are just for infantry, and which work only when you're in a vehicle/aircraft etc. You can figure it out most of the time from the name of the control, but not always.

Just start with the basic controls, which is for Infantry, and familiarize yourself with them, as the core of ArmA2 is Infantry.

Don't bother mapping every key before you start playing....it takes to much time.

You'll learn them faster, by changing them while being ingame.

The bootcamp or Armory is a good place to start.

If you're about to use a vehicle, start mapping vehicle-keys...etc.

Some keys overlap different roles...for example, I like to use my joystick to drive vehicles as well: the "point nose down" for aircrafts works as "move forward" for vehicles too.

Remember that your controller (joystick, gamepad) needs to be connected prior to firing up the game, otherwise Arma2 won't recognize your presets.

hint: the evasive L/R command is a good way to flatten a patch of grass, when you want to go sniping. ;)

Btw, there's a way to unlock every Armory-unit...very nice, if you don't like those armory-challenges.

I've been playing for a while and know the basic controls. But now when I'm starting to look into the controls more carefully and doing more advanced things like locking guided missiles onto targets and flying aircraft there seem to be quite a few controls that don't have a self-explaining name and no explanation in the manual. I guess I'm just going to have to try them all out and see what happens.

I was wondering since I got A2 if there are separate buttons for "target/lock" and "zoom". There is one key called "lock or/and zoom" and one "reveal target" but the second one I think isnt "lock" too? So there are several separate keys for zoom in/out... but not for lock. Any tips? Am I just blind or this needs a fix?
