What DO work??

Recommended Posts

We spent too much time talking about how to solve individual problems with running ArmA that we forgot to ask what those of you running ArmA at 60fps (probably ArmA2 too?) and decent graphics with no problems at all, what machine specs are you guys using?

DJ's Guide to Problem-Free Gaming (or at least very few problems)

After having read gaming forums posts for years and years, here's my take on problem-free gaming. The suggestions are to minimize problems for peeps who are not PC hardware gurus and the like - not to knock certain technologies! REPEAT - not to knock certain technologies.

1. Buy the physical game - don't download it.

2. Buy the highest-performing video card you can afford.

3. Buy a single GPU video card - avoid using SLI and crossfire.

4. Buy a very high-quality power supply (as in PC Power and Cooling)

5. Don't game on a laptop.

6. Buy a NEW, recent, late-model optical drive. Some old readers can not handle certain game's copy protection. Readers only cost $20.

7. Don't run a game on an OS that didn't exist when the game came out.

8. Don't run with obscene amounts of RAM that do nothing for your gaming or even your computing experience.

9. If you're really desperate for a better gaming experience, you might even consider Nvidia over ATI...though it looks like ATI may become dominant soon. This is obviously the least important of all items in the list.

Of course, all the above have been violated with complete success. They are simple suggestions for those with smaller budgets or are not "tech gurus" or are simply desperate for a good gaming experience.

I've been gaming since the original Tomb Raider came out and the only significant problem I can remember running into was severe graphical anomalies and bugs in Splinter Cell 4 - simply because the game was a flaming POS and still is today - the problems were never corrected via patches.

LOL.....I'm running Win 7 RC 7100 64 bit with 8G ram running 2xGTX 260's in SLI. I just reinstalled ARMA and it never ran better patched to 1.14. I'll try 1.17 beta. I also have set up a RAM Disk for loading files and add-ons. Dynawar SP mission runs very nicely with hardly any lag.

I was pleasantly surprised to see ARMA run so well. Got fed up with in XP. It's running quite well with W-7. SLI doesn't really do much, ARMA just doesn't utilize SLI well.
