ArmA 2 keyboard

Recommended Posts

i know this sounds dumb but what about BIS creating a special A2 keyboard?

the idea has just hopped in my head from the old JOTR days where you got a card to put over the Function keys. what about a layout of spaced keys? i mean like the horizontal rows were spaced with the key function below each key?

maybe even placed on the side face of the key like the old spectrum keyboards?

the simpler the better, but you guys that played Arma for a long time will have the keys imprinted in your mind. its folk like me who still need to look at the keyboard to find the words as i type.

cant be a bad idea and possibly a good marketing wassit?

but then people that don't wanna fork over the extra $$ for a keyboard that can only be used for this game would be screwed...

They could always create a keyboard you can buy on the side (if thats what someone wants to spend their money on). However i think we all know this will never happen.

Its easy to learn this though. Even if you say we have it in our heads - we started exactlly like you. We were all noobs at some point in life right. All you need is some patience. We are far away from colorful 6 button games around here. :) Take your time and learn the basic controls first - so they sit in your backbone (movement, stances and action menu). Then after that go into the squad leader role. That is the hardest part - to learn the sections and orders to hand out. But they are not that hard when you break it down:

In this order you go about to chose and give your AI orders:

1. F2-12/SpaceBar: Chose unit(s)

2. 0-9: Section (formation, stance, action etc)

3. 0-9: Orders (in each section is the specific orders to give the AI)

So im chosing all my units (SpaceBar), and then i want to change their formation so i press "8" wich is the formation section, and then i want them to go into Column Compact formation so i press "8" again. SpaceBar-8-8 is what i have in my head and i dont need to read anything. Just pressing the buttons in a flash. Youll get there soon enough as well. And if you like the game it shouldnt be any problems. On the journey of exploring this game you will learn them soon enough. Its a satisfying feeling getting better and better at something IMO.

Go now and explore - and learn those buttons! :)

get on ebay, buy a used preh or xkeys programmable board, iv got a 128 key preh and it 'just' has enough buttons for everything i want it to do.

be aware tho, the PS2 preh boards have an issue with multiple keypresses at the same time (usb ones may be the same, i dont have one to try it out), they work fine provided you dont press them both at exactly the same time, if you do the board beeps at you and does nothing at all.

great for command interface, not really workable for the WASD type/primary controls

i tell a lie, i was dicking around with the preh programmer app and it turns out the thing with multiple simultaneous keypresses is a 'fat finger' alarm, and can be disabled.

now i need to re-think my whole layout design, see if it is actually viable to put the infantry control and command stuff on at the same time.
