Sun info

Is there any way to get any information on the sun's position? i.e. height or angle?

Not as such. To the best of my knowledge. But on a given day and at a given time, the sun's position will always be the same. Do some empirical tests. But remember that they are island specific

I think that the sunset & sunrise times are dependant on latitude of island and/or time of year. Time of year for sure, but maybe latitude too.

Yes. It is dependant on latitude and longitude. I'm sure that's what nominesine meant by saying "island specific" :)

You'd probably be best to send a request for this information to the BIS developers.

Baring that you could possibly work out via some trig. the approximate height/angle at various points in time & lat/long based on running DXRipper and loading the output into Max.

From memory the emissive sun polygons are captured too. Perhaps you could then work out the relative offset of these poly's to the characters position in the capture while in Max.

Then taking this approximation you could factor in your knowledge of the in game characters position and orientation to the centerpos of the 'world'.

Might yeild a rough guesstimate/rule of thumb but just as well might not.

You'd probably be better off harassing a BIS staff member for the info. imo.

Why are you interested in the sun's position & angle? To facilitate some in-game scripting based on where it is? Or, is it related to terrain content development in a 3rd. party application?

Theres a simple reply!:D

I wish to use a dusk/dawn triggering mechanism. As the day & night cycles change for maps & time of year, I though that using the sun itself would be the most foolproof method.

I think there is an issue with regard to the configs. The configs for Utes and Chernarus place the lat/long at -45/30, which I believe is New Zealand (the northern island).

The NZ sunrise/sunset times can be found here:

http://www.rasnz.org.nz/SRSStimes.htm

But, in some testing, those don't match up for Utes. In January, they are ok, but by March/April, they are noticeably off.

Quick test - according to the RASNZ, sunrise on May 1, 2009, was at 7:07am. In-game, it appears more like 6:00am. (I think.)

Edit:

@ 0600 (my testing suggested 0542 was a better time to label "sunrise")

@ 0700 (the approximate time of NZ sunrise IRL according to that site)

Thanks to DM for the pics. :)

BTW, I've done some more looking, and I think the sunrise/sunset times correlate more with the Baltics than New Zealand. :) About 60N 30E (which is really more St. Petersburg) seems to line up pretty well.

It may be a bit of an inside joke - Belarus/Chernarus. :D

Actually that's the whole point of the name :P

The country we play in is 'Black Russia' instead of 'White Russia' (Belarus).

But indeed, if you check the stars as well it seem to be quite far north. I think St. Petersburg is a fair estimate.

Да, знаю. ;)

I wonder if that stuff is specified in a config or something? As I stated earlier, the long/lat in the cfg is for New Zealand. It would take an awful lot of vodka to get those confused. :D
