Strange

Recommended Posts

My computer specs are as follows:

Operating System: XP

Processor: Intel® Pentium® 4 CPU 3.00GHz (2 CPUs)

Memory: 2048MB RAM

Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce 9800

Power Supply: 450w 120mm Fan

Motherboard: ASUS P5KPL-CM

I thought I'd be able to run it on this rig, it fits the recommended requirements and yet for some reason (after I've been playing for a hour or two) the game becomes unbearably slow. It will lag suddenly and pretty soon it does that continuously.

Advice? Comments?

your cpu is the bare minimum to run the game...yes you can run it; but don't expect full performance. Being that the game is highly CPU intensive, you might want to monitor your temps and make sure your CPU (and graphics card) isn't overheating, which could cause weird stuff to happen

When playing for long period periodically do Shift - then type flush to clear out your textures, this will enable it to keep running ok.

Note that Shift - will not display anything on screen but after you type flush it will say 'activating flush' and sort your issue out.

Rgds.

Thanks for the responses, I'll definitely use that flush command in the future. As for my game, I disabled PhysX and it runs really smoothly now. Been playing for about three hours and it hasn't lagged at all.

My system is similar but with a 8800gts and it runs fine with everything on normal but with PP, AA turned off @ 1280x768. I get an av. of between 25 and 30 FPS.

Glad you sorted it out.

how stupid is that, just looking at the back of my box and you are right, but the bare minimum for AMD is a 3200+ (single core)

optimal intel = quad core or fast 2.8ghz dual core

optimal AMD = athlon 64 x2 4400+

lol

never noticed that...guess AMD had a kick-ass processor with that one lol

That was my big deal. I built a whole new rig and just went with AMD. In my opinion they are better for gaming.

@ the original poster: Glad you got your game working well. Next upgrade should be memory!

he's borderline on PSU too.

(I only have 2 gig of ram 4x512, knew I should have got gig sticks back in the day but 2 gig was a HUGE amount then, even 1 GIG was lol )

Hey me again, I upgraded my RAM to 4gigs now, and I'm looking to upgrade my CPU to a Intel Core i5 750. I've read it's a VERY good processor, but my question is will it run with my computer? I'm worried about my recently upgraded power supply not being able to cut it, but that's about it since my mobo can handle the current CPU, it should handle the new one.

Comments, questions, concerns?

Dont forget too set 3D RESOLUTION TO 100% OR LOWER AND AA OFF

lol...wut???

back on topic, if you're planning on just buying new i5 and throwing it in your system you're mistaken. You're gonna need a whole new motherboard, RAM, PSU, video card (if it's not PCI-express)...a whole new system.

The easiest option would to buy a pre-built gaming system (not the cheapest one you can find) from a manufacturer like Dell, or whatever other companies. The cheaper way would be to build it yourself; but make sure you know what you're buying so you know if it's compatible

Why would I need a new system? That's ridiculous, I don't have the money for that. I feel like you didn't even check the specs since I posted again in this topic, judging by the way you bracketed the PCI-E thing.

If my computer really isn't compatible, then what's a CPU that I CAN just throw in without any further upgrades and that performs BETTER than my dual core?

BTW: What makes it incompatible with my computer? That would've been helpful information, since that's what I was asking before.

Lol... the PSU is fine as long as it's not some "no-name". In reality, the CPU you have is probably the best you will get for the long forgotten socket 478. Just stick with what you have for now until you can be bothered or have the money for a complete upgrade. Everything these days is incompatible with your current setup. You could always upgrade the video card, but it would be a complete waste of money as it will be bottle-necked by your CPU.

It's not a socket 478!!! It's a socket 775 ffs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Anyways, I now see why it's not compatible, so I've got two alternatives. Buy the Intel Q9550, or for a little extra buy a bundle deal that comes with the Asus M4A785-M Mobo and AMD X4 620. They're both under $250, and although just buying the CPU is cheaper the motherboard deal looks great (even though it'd mean switching allegiance). What do you all think? Buy the combo, or buy the CPU?
